THE MATCH

Last night was an incredible sporting event -- at any level! Myrtle Beach brought a great crowd to The Cage and the place was electric. The field looked great, signs (pro-BC and pro-MB) were all over, and the fans were into the match the entire 100 minutes.

As for the teams, not much to be said except for a tremendous admiration for both teams' spirit and style. Talk about leaving it all on the field -- both teams (and both sets of coaches and fans) were emotionally drained by the end of the match. Ebbs and flows, highs and lows -- typical of matches at this point of the season.

First goal was scored at the 22:12 mark when the Seahawks executed a great set piece just outside the penalty area as sophomore Mark Hubbard slotted home a shot on a double assist from Gradey Grumman (SR) and Paul O'Dea (SR).

B-C answered just one minute from intermission when junior forward Eduardo Adam rifled home a super build up by Josh Davis (SR) and Robby Setzler (SR). 1-1 at halftime.

The Bearcats really controlled the second half's possession and held a 6-2 advantage on shots as Myrtle Beach looked weary after winning a thrilling 5-4 overtime match on Thursday at Hilton Head. However, B-C could not muster a score and overtime was to be played.

At the 86' mark of the first extra time period, "DuDu" (Adam) notched his 30th goal of the season as the Brazilian exchange student converted a penalty kick after B-C senior Brodie Wall was pushed down in the box. The Cage went wild!

Ever the warriors, the Seahawks received a stellar play by senior William Lee as he dribbled past three or four Bearcats down the left touchline and once in the penalty area rocketed a shot into the back of the net to level the score at 2-2.

Then, in almost a storybook setting, junior Christoph Holzwarth intercepted a pass in his third of the field and went on a jaunt that ended in jubilation for the Brookland-Cayce faithful and utter heartache for the Myrtle Beach crew. An exchange student from Germany, Holzwarth covered more than 60 yards with the ball at his feet and once inside the Seahawks' third of the pitch he looked up to find the goalkeeper's setting and launched a worm-burning 25 yard shot that found the side netting and set the BCHS campus into an uproar! A diabolical shot in the 99th minute to say the least and an unreal ending to an unbelievable match.

POST MATCH

#300 was in the sights at the beginning of the season, but really was an afterthought during the year. Your focus always has to be on "this team". However, when the Bearcats finally got healthy and everyone back into a groove (B-C has reeled off 11 wins in its last 12 matches), #300 came back to the forefront. Nothing was said to BCHS faculty or administration, nothing to the media, nothing to the fans, and more importantly -- nothing to the players. This is the 2008 team and the numbers build if you stay in the game long enough, but I know this achievement means so much to BEARCAT SOCCER to have positioned the program to celebrate this milestone. It was a special night for a special school and program and I know everyone with the 2008 squad would like to thank everyone that was able to be in attendance, called, e-mailed, or texted since Friday. BEARCAT PRIDE!

Below is the special recognition after the match at The Cage:

#300

Soccer Fans & Bearcat Soccer Players,

If I could have your attention for a couple of special recognitions at midfield as part of Brookland-Cayce’s celebration of reaching the Class 3A Semifinals in boys and girls soccer.

COACH BRAD COLEMAN
To lead off, the Bearcat Soccer Program would like to acknowledge its sincere appreciation for Athletic Director Brad Coleman, who will be moving on in his professional career next month after faithfully serving B-C Athletics in that capacity as well as head football coach the past eight years. Coach Coleman, a 1990 graduate of B-C, has truly been a friend of prep soccer not only at Brookland-Cayce High School, but also at the state level as the Class 3A Coordinator for the majority of his tenure. During his time as A.D., at B-C, the boys soccer program has captured a pair of Class 3A Lower State Championships, advanced to four Semifinals, and won four region titles, while also earning three consecutive Academic Team Awards as presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Similarly, the girls soccer program tallied a Class 3A State Championship in 2005, won two more Lower State titles, and has advanced to the Semifinals four times. Please join me in a round of applause for Coach Brad Coleman on a job well done!

COACH KEVIN HEISE
Now for the second recognition of Bearcat Soccer as boys coach Kevin Heise earned his 300th career varsity victory this evening with the win vs. Myrtle Beach. The win total makes Heise, a 1989 graduate of B-C, one of just nine coaches in Palmetto State history to reach that plateau and his winning mark of 71% ranks in the top five of that prestigious list. In 18 seasons at the helm of the Brookland-Cayce boys soccer program, Heise has registered 300 wins, 121 losses, and 15 draws in 436 matches. Included in that span are two Class 3A Lower State Championships, five Semifinals appearances, nine region titles, five region runner-up finishes, 13 seasons of 16 or more victories, three 20-plus win seasons, and 14 Final Top 10 rankings. Brookland-Cayce has had numerous players go onto play collegiate soccer and even more who have taken “Bearcat Pride” into their professional careers and endeavors. B-C’s soccer motto of “Commitment, Pride, and Tradition” can be seen throughout the program from its coaches, alumni, players, parents, and support staff that have elevated Bearcat Soccer into one of South Carolina’s elite prep sports programs. Congratulations Coach Kevin Heise and Bearcat Soccer!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the BC Bearcats players, coaches, and supporters on a great game Saturday night at the Cage. I would also like to congratulate Coach Heise on his 300th victory, a tremendous milestone which speaks volumes about the character, class, and success of the staff and program. The match was a clear-cut definition of what high school athletics is truly all about. Our program would like to wish BC continued success in their playoff run, and thank them for a great match.

This was a great game.
I'm on the sidelines and see and hear a little more than most, and I can tell you the Seahawks are an all around class team (in both skill and attitude)
The boys from both side really left it out on the field.

It was our privilege to host such a great team.
