At Irmo

South Aiken defeats Irmo in PKs. Great win for the Lady T-Breds, and huge turnaround from a 5-2 defeat at home last week. Somewhere the genius that is Michael Young is smiling!

0-0 at half and the end of regulation with Irmo getting the better of play. OT looked even with a couple of good opportunities for both. On to the crapshoot (one word or two?) with Irmo making their 2nd and 3rd pk's while SA wins it on their fourth straight conversion. After getting demolished in the first encounter, South Aiken threw out that game plan and went with something a good bit different. Hard to get kids motivated for a team you hung five on previously, but I know the Yellow Jacket coaches did all they could to get them up for it. Irmo looked great and like a top 15 team - easy. I'll say it again, they are a top 15 team easy. Just one of those nights for the T-Breds of South Aiken...

Yeah, Baaaaaby!!!!

Great job by SA and my favorite redneck! Looking more like George's girls than hurricanes for you in the playoffs. No offense to Greenwood, but if you had to choose between the two and with your history of Hannah...

I'll call you in a bit for the details.

For 2A region 7-Waccamaw was first, Loris second, Marion and Aynor 3rd and 4th...we only have 4 teams with girls team. Dillon and Mullins don't have girls teams. It was the 2nd season for the Loris girls and the only losses came from Waccamaw, as last year they won zero region games. Proud of the Girls!!

originally you just had the link but that is obvious smart---, so you quickly added the "three" below it to give the appearance that you added the link as a reference. And of course you checked the box for editing without the note at the bottom.

Very clever, but you don't fool me.

Hard fought, physical game with plenty of yellows, all given by the same official. The most damaging was against the Daniel keeper, resulting in a direct kick by Greenville, with a DHS field player standing in goal. That one turned out to be the game winner. DHS had their chances, but couldn't finish.

So why does the HSL have this arcane rule that a player has to leave the field when a yellow card is issued against them? No other level of soccer does this. Stupid rule!

Very well. SA had emptied their 6 shooter against Irmo and didn't have enough for NA. Hank's Jackets played sound defense and gave SA a rare shutout. North Augusta had the ball outside the 18 when one of their forwards went down with a cramp. NA awarded a free kick with play stopped and sent it up in the air. 10 players plus 23 fans crashed the goal and punched in the game winner. Great goal and if you're going to lose, at least do it on a nice goal - well done Hank and well done North Augusta. Looks like a log jam coming up in R4 below Lexington.

Region 1 4A scores:

Wren 2 Greenwood 1
Westside 2 Easley 1 (3-2 PKs)
Hanna 10 Laurens 0

right now the first three teams are set:

1. Hanna
2. Wren
3. Greenwood

Westside and Easley go at it again next Wednesday for the fourth spot in the playoffs. I would love to see that match at Westside if I didn't have to go visit that crazy German up I85 on the same day.

Whichever team gets paired with North Augusta in the first round of the playoffs is going to be in for it. Very strong, fast, and physical team -- particularly defensively.

It's "Coach Fryland and company."

To answer your question sincerely, it would really depend on the teams that showed up on that particular day to play. Who scares me the most? Irmo. I think Irmo is one of the most talented teams around and while they've had problems, on any given night they can give any team in the state fits. I think North Augusta is one of the strongest teams defensively and is dangerous on counter-attacks. South Aiken is a well-coached and disciplined team and is excellent all-around (as their record and ranking indicate.) I know that Aiken really misses the midfielder who was injured and is struggling to find their way, but if Aiken is "on" they are pretty tough as well.

Region IV has in the past tended to be a defensively minded region that relied on counter-attacks. It's a little more diverse now.

Sorry for dancing around your question -- but it's a tough call. I know you have a lot of really talented younger players with whom I'm not as familiar, but with Casey in the middle, Caitlin up top, and Kendall in goal I know you're going to do incredibly well regardless of whomever you play.

CJ, what can we expect out of R1 outside of Hanna? How would you describe their style. I'd agree with Shi about the wide range of tactics. Irmo and Lex come at you in waves, while NA and SA try and hold the fort down and catch you in a numbers game. Aiken can just about play any style and that's what makes them so aggravating...other than their coach who disappears and doesn't show up when he said he would.

Brookland-Cayce 1:0 Blythewood

Great game to watch on the Bearcats "Senior Night" at The Cage! B-C goalkeeper Alley Greer played fantastic and made two tremendous saves to preserve the shutout. Blythewood has a girl up top that has some serious pace and is a quality player.

On Monday, April 21, Dreher beat Camden 5 - 0.

On Tuesday, April 22, Dreher beat Cardinal Newman 3 - 1.

Dreher lost twice last week - Blythewood and Sumter - both bad losses (Is there such a thing as a 'good' loss?). They've snapped out of the slump nicely I think, just in time to confront AC Flora for the region championship.

Of course, if they had beaten Blythewood, they would already be champs.

My apologies if these scores have been posted, but I didn't see them during a quick scan.

Best two teams in SCISA faced off for region championship tonight.

Pinewood should be the #2 seed from the lowerstate and sets up a possible showdown in Greenville against St. Joe's in the state semifinals.

It proves Region II is a tough place to play. Doesn't Hanna have to play the number four seed in the first round?
It could be Byrnes, S'Burg or Mauldin.

Unfortunately, that dubious honor would belong to Fort Mill. It'll be tough to get to the second round this year.

Is your phone working Michael? I texted and called.

My girls deserve a smarter coach. the Riverside fiasco scared me about playing flatback defense and I outsmarted myself and started in a 4-4-2. We were horribly disorganized early and Byrnes scored on a second chance corner kick about ten minutes into the game. Sound familiar? Let me tell you one thing about Byrnes...don't let them score first. You have to be very good to score on that team while they protect a lead. Congrats to Kingsley and the girls on a great game. Sigh. We have played some of the best in this fine state and this was our first shutout of the year. And I don't like it one bit. But the credit goes to Byrnes.

And now that I have been nice, I have to say one thing that is really bothering me...

Why is the best pitch that I have seen in South Carolina located in Laurens while the sorriest piece of crap poor excuse of a soccer field with a crown that makes it impossible to see lines(or maintain possession on the sideline)and more dirt and rocks than grass located in Duncan within sight of the big jumbotron in the real stadium? the ground was so hard that the balls bounced twice as high as usual and when players slid they earned strawberries large enough to glue them to their sheets tonight in bed (those of you that have ever played know the experience). I just don't understand how one of the storied schools in the state have facilities like this. Can they not afford an irrigation system?

Please understand that I am in no way blaming this loss to the field conditions, but if you have ever played then you know there is no worse feeling than not being confident in your touch. Especially when your game is skillfull passing, not crash and kick.

I feel better now. I still believe Byrnes very much deserved the win tonight but I am grateful that I will not have to play there in the playoffs.

Internet's been down and I'm running a little behind...

4/22 at Goose Creek

GC 1
Berkeley 2

Berkeley in PK's (3-1) for the second time this year. Goose Creek played their hardest for this one--all bets are always off for this rivalry. Creek scored first on a perfect direct free kick from just outside the 18 that grazed both the post and the crossbar of the upper 90...never saw one better. Berkeley answered on a battle inside the box before the half. What ensued was a knock-down drag-out battle for the ball that had us hitting everything but the back of the net while watching some very ominous clouds roll in--nobody wanted to be down a goal if the lightning started. Game finished in 4 rounds of PKs with the Creek scoring unanswered in the first pairing and Berkeley scoring unanswered in the next three to put it out of reach.

4/23 at Berkeley

Berkeley 2
Battery Creek 0

Berkeley came out half speed, apparently still recovering from OT last night. Took a while to get our legs back under us and settle in; goals by freshmen Chelsey Holloway in the first half and Brittany May in the second lit the fire, while the defense got aggressive to hold the shutout.

Two games in a row...need to keep fired up to do it again Thursday night...and Friday night...Berkeley is going for the endurance test with a four-night streak!

CJ, my apologies. The weather was not good and I didn't want to take any chances by talking about work some more. High pressure zone moving in so I think things will be better.

I was first impressed with Byrnes for having their old Mary Black tournament with a soccer specific field. Looking at the fball field, though, I don't think they are getting quite the same love. Great team, needs some field love from the powers that be to match their play.

CJ, as coach of the Lady Warhorses, they know no difference. I guess it is kind of weird but all girls teams at Barnwell are known as the Lady Warhorses, maybe if we have a stellar season in the future I can find a different nickname!!!

It really just got me thinking about school mascots. We are the yellow jackets and we have called our girls the Lady Yellow Jackets forever, but isn't that redundant? We should probably call our boys drones.

I was at the game also last night and I can not agree more. I have never seen a soccer ball bounce higher on the third bounce than it did on the first until last night. Terrible field!!!!!!

One more thing also bothered me. I was told that one of players for Byrnes was the daughter of the head ref. If that is true I think it was very un professional of him to put himself in that position. I don't want to take away Byrnes great goal in the first 2 minutes of the game, but there were some very questionable no calls and in my opinion the head ref let the game get way to physical. One no call was an obvious retaliation tackle, knee high and was an obviously red card and no card or call at all was made. I would think even if the head ref was absolutley perfect why would he put himself in that postition.

the soccer field at Byrnes is awful, my kid got cut by glass in the field, several kids noted it in the field. sad.

The byrnes girls play very physical, smash comes to mind but not over the top. Skillful up top. Good team.

The Byrnes boys team wins the few they get by hacking the talent on the other team until a fight breaks out, but that is another story. Jv kids crawling over the fence to get into the fight. No control nor class.

The only reason the soccer field was built at Byrnes was to keep the soccer players off their hallowed football grounds AND to give the football players a practice field for the rest of the year. Even during our training season (football on their offseason) while I was at Byrnes we could not use the weight room most of the time because the football team took precedent even thought their season had just ended.

They built the soccer field a couple years after I graduated and occasionally my brother told me they couldnt even use it due to the football team. Amazing.

I hate to see that the Boys team is apparently in the position they are, we worked very hard while I was there to improve our level of skill and respect around the region and state...apparently that work has reverted back to prehistoric kickball.

--Dreher Dad: Both "bad losses"? I am not sure if I agree with this statement. How can you lose to a team 3-0 and it be a bad loss. I agree that teams do have "slumps" occasionally, however, I attended that game and from what I saw Blythewood dominated it for the most part.

That is true, however, I don't think that I would blame it completely on the "slump". Many teams this year have stepped up their game and shown their true potential against difficult teams, "slump" or not. Dreher has always had a lot of potential and a great team. Sumter is moving up and so is Blythewood. I think I just need to make a stand for the teams who don't get enough recognition for their hard work.

Tony King/stump duck--No game report from last night's game?

Ah well shoot since you asked.... I had figured Heise's recap was good enough to pass along the score so I just figured to let that ride.

Since you asked though-- I thought it was a very good game for my girls, basically even in terms of play between the two teams. They would control the ball for a while, we would control, they would quick counter, we would quick counter. Back and forth- back and forth. The last 10-15 minutes were absolutely outstanding fun to watch- incredible!

The goal came in the 7th minute I believe on what I think was a cross more than a shot. To me- it looked like the player was trying to cross the ball back into play and it just happened to float over my keeper and into the back corner of the net. I could be wrong and it may have been a shot, just from my angle that is how it looked.

We dinked their post a couple of time, they dinked ours once I think. I agree with Ken Smith's summary-- that there was a lot of nail biting going on, on both sides, scoring chances unrecognized, and that it could have gone either way.

One thing I do need to add is that I actually had the opportunity to help coach some of the BC girls in club a couple of years, some of them live in my neighborhood, I see them at the pool in the summer, etc… so loosing to them is a bit bittersweet, especially since it was their Senior Night. It is a strange situation when a team gets off the bus- several of them give you hugs and high fives-asks how are you doing-says they miss you- and then beats you 6-0 at home but then on the way back to their bus, more hugs and high fives etc. That was last year. 0-1 and the effort the girls put forth last night at BC this year is plenty enough for me to be proud of and hopefully build on…..although I think I’m going to have to scold my daughter for volunteering to be a BC ball girl for the game and for my son playing soccer at half time with them. WHERE IS THE LOVE I ASK YOU!!!!

Best of luck to BC the rest of the way this year. Best wishes to the girls moving on to college and Governor’s school. And wishes of success for the young ladies waiting in the wings to fill the cleats of those moving on!

No bigger games in the upstate, as far as playoff implications, than these two:

4/24 - Mauldin @ Spartanburg
4/25 - Northwestern @ Clover

I believe all four of these teams could still finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th in their region.

Mauldin wins in PK'S

Great fast paced game played by both teams. Spartanburg scored
with about eleven minutes left and Mauldin scored about four minutes later. Not much separates the top four in Region II.

About 5 minutes into the game Eastside player, Catie Moore, took a shot that was deflected by the keeper. Caroline Moore collected the rebound and finished for the lone goal. In second half Riverside dominated shots, but Eastside did a good job pressuring shots to low percentage angles and distances. Exiting game.

Unfortunately, Lindsay Patterson for Riverside and Cara Woolford for Eastside left the game in the second due to injuries. I don't know Lindsay's condition, I hope she is alright. I believe Cara is getting a cast on her wrist.

I think so. I believe tonight pretty much finalizes the region standings for all of us. Need 1 or 2 more scores to figure 4-5 out but 1-2-3 are set I believe: Dreher- us - Flora.

Second game this week won in PKs, 4-2. Getting more gray hairs by the minute. Still having trouble finding the rhythm to get it in the net; took a gamble with defense to create offense to put Berkeley up 1-0 late in the second half on a rather nice setup finished by sophomore Hannah Scott. Dropping back to defense again almost worked, but CC sneaked in a breakaway with under 5 to go to tie the score. No score in OT; finished the job in PKs.

Also would like to thank the gracious CC fans who pelted our JV players and parents with coins during the varsity game; one of our parents was so moved by your generous donations that he offered to buy a going-home meal at Wendy's for the entire JV and varsity teams.

Gotta get geared up for one more on the road tomorrow...pass the Red Bull!

Is there another decent #4 vs. #1 first-round match up lurking out there somewhere?

Are you kidding? That shows you how good Andy Robinson is as a coach and how far he has brought his young er-than-last-year's-10-seniors team this year. Riverside has 10 seniors this year. They now have lost 2 games in the past 10 days after winning 100 in a row.

Seniors do the job in playoffs, not freshman who are there for the first time. Give me 10 seniors any day. Either Riverside or Eastside has been in the state championship every year since playoffs began, I believe. I think the bet this year is that streak will continue.

Great job Eastside. For the sake of the other schools in Region 2-AAA, we would appreciate it if you would stop ticking Riverside off. They have the tradition, talent, and coaching to win state. All they have to do is execute, and their history would tell you they are pretty good at that.

So is Eastside.

Some numbers to back up what ROH is saying. By my count, Riverside has so far this year played 11 games against currently ranked top-25 opponents. For comparison, Eastside and Airport have played 6 games against top-25 opponents.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the wonderful programs at Eastside and Airport, but Riverside has the type of strength of schedule you typically see in the stronger 4A schedules. I understand that they probably should be classified in 4A already; but they sure aren't hiding from competition.

Bottom line: if anyone is giving good odds against Riverside versus the field in the 3A state playoffs, I'd like to place my bets.

It must have been a wild night for the Greenville/Spartanburg soccer. I haven't had this many emails about soccer in one morning since the AAAA championship game last year. Most of the information has already been shared on the post. The only thing not shared was the Clover coaches were spotted at the Mauldin/Spartanburg game trying to get a leg up for the playoffs. Hurst and CJ any plans on attending the Mauldin/Byrnes game on Monday?

Hurst and Grasshopper,

Monday we are hoping for a well played game with no injuries to either team. We hope to bring our best to the playoff matches with Region III teams.

Shibumi,

Riverside is certainly a solid choice in 3A but I'll stand by my February prediction and go with the girls from Hilton Head.

You could be right...certainly their 4/15 win over BE is a big win for them. But with a schedule made up of only 3 top-25 programs and losses to West Ashley and James Island -- I've got to bet that Airport in the lower state is better.

But what the heck do I know!!!

It's tanning time. How can Hilton Head beat Riverside? Do they still play soccer 7 days a week in the lower state or do they alternate days sponsored by Coppertone?

[Boy, that sounds old. Do they still make Coppertone?]

I got a pm from a "Soccerdamus" stating this about the WH game. It is very, very funny if true:

The Greer girls let the Wade Hampton travel across town to their stadium, complete their full warmup, do their pregame cheers, and go onto the field to start the game. Greer had the ball first. A kid walked to the middle of the field and said, "We forfeit."

The Dreher v Flora matchup was the single dirtiest match that I have ever witnessed - club or school games.

Obviously, my view is subjective. However, the facts are that the yellow cards began with ACF #16 throwing DHS #8 to the ground in the first half. The rough play continued into the second half and ended with ACF (#7 I think) punching DHS #3 in the face. (The pictures have been sent to the DHS faithful. #3's parents will decide on any further action.) #7 got a yellow card. This player has been suspended in prior seasons for fighting and had no business being on the team, much less the field.

I blame the ref's who allowed this to happen and I blame the ACF coach who allowed #7 to be on the team. There have been discussions on this board re: poor referring that I have read but did not participate in. I took them with a grain of salt, but I now understand.

My daughter has at least two more games - the last scheduled game then it's off to the playoffs. She is ready for her HS career to be over, especially if the games are allowed to deteriorate as the last one did.

My player is retired now. She's matriculating at Boston University.

Cardinal Newman-0 @ Ben Lippen-2

Senior Night
BL Seniors: Lainey Heaton #6, Meritt Rollins #7, Anne Armstrong #17 (GK)

Stats:
Goals- Lauren Jones, Meritt Rollins
Assists- Carrie Settle (1)
Saves- BL-Anne Armstrong (13); CN-Amy Kolowsky (8)

Came out fast and played great the first 10 minutes. Then dropped back into a defensive mindset, playing slow and sloppy soccer the rest of the first half. 0-0 at the half. Second half was a different story as we came out aggressive and strong, playing much more offensive. Gave CN fewer chances in the second and were able to capitalize on our opportunities. Meritt Rollins played a great game in midfield in the second half. Anne Armstrong recorded a shutout in goal in her final regular season home game as a senior. Lauren Jones and Carrie Settle played excellently up front. Lauren Jones' goal came off a beautiful cross from Carrie Settle in front of the goal. The BL defense stepped up to a new level in the second half. Hats off to all my girls who left it all on the field in the last 40 minutes! That puts BL at 6-3 in the region and in 2nd place with one more region game to play. You made me proud ladies! Seniors, excellent stand in your final regular season home game! We will miss all three of you!

You know a lot Shibumi. Airport vs. Riverside in the final. Everybody knows that Andy is a great coach, but when it comes to playoffs, Riverside has the seniors and I can tell you from experience...when they are focused, they are scary good. I don't have as much experience with the lower state, but I have watched both HH and Airport and I think that Airport will represent the low.

North Augusta 1
Aiken 0

1st round of pks 3-3 (both teams first & last shooters missed with everyone in between making)

2nd round first 4 shooters on both teams scored & Aiken's 5th shooter hits the crossbar & Paige Busbee for North Augusta finishes.

Hard fought match that had some exciting scoring chances for both teams.

Hey, it was classy...all nickels and dimes, not a penny in the lot! CC played a hard, fair match that we barely got out of, and Coach Reid and his girls have always been gracious hosts, which is why I asked them for a second match to fill an empty spot this year. I wouldn't begin to judge the program or the community by the actions of a few fans.

On to the sigh of relief--Red Bull Week is finally over. In the fourth straight night of soccer, in Orangeburg:

Berkeley 3
O-W 0

Our girls were flat worn out in the fourth straight night of soccer, including three on the road and two OTs with PKs, but they did what they had to in order to finish the job. O-W packed a lot of legs in the box and made it hard to thread the needle; goals were scored from 25 and more yards out by freshman Taylor Tracy and junior Kayla Barwick, and from the corner by senior Katie Black.

Thus was burned the last few drops of fuel in the tank; if you'll all excuse me, I think I'll go slip into a peaceful coma for the rest of the weekend. Someone wake me for the rematch with Stratford on Tuesday!

After sweeping ranked AA teams at the end of the season, WHS should enter the playoffs as the #1 seed in the Upstate.

Great job for the players and coaches!

Coach,

How do you think the teams in the "upperstate" match up with the teams in the "lowerstate"?

I have seen Pinewood, HHP, HHCA and St. Joe's in person on more than one occasion, but have not seen the other contenders. I thought St. Joe's was physically strong, but incredibly slow and would have a hard time matching up with the speed of Pinewood and HHP.

As the second seed, you would get Hilton Head Christian in the first round.

SCISA sports fan,

I tried sending you a PM, but don't know that I was successful, so let me try and answer to you here.

I've had the privilege to see only one lowerstate team, HHCA, who beat us in the Lady Eagle Classic in PK's. I personally believe we were the better team on the field that day, but not on the scoreboard. If we see them again, hopefully we can control the scoreboard as well. They are a very talented and well-coached team, and would be a very tough game in the first round! As for the other lowerstate teams, I know that HHP and Pinewood apparently have much speed and talent on their teams. The upperstate is a very strong and tough region this year, and we tend to beat up on each other throughout the season. However, I think that will make us stronger for the playoffs, and I think we will match up well with the lowerstate. As a region, we don't seem to have as much speed across the board as the lowerstate teams, and that could become a factor in the playoffs. I do think you'll find the upperstate teams, while maybe not as fast, will hang in there with a lot of toughness.

St. Joe's may not have as much speed this season, but is extremely talented and physically tough. Hammond can be extremely dangerous, and Heathwood has some speed that can cause problems for the fastest of backfields. Cardinal Newman is young, but technically sound. Ben Lippen is extremely talented and can be very dangerous when playing to our potential.

I think HHP and Pinewood have the advantage going in with homefield in the first round and a lot of speed. I've heard HHP has the fastest backfield in SCISA, which will make it hard for any challenger. I'd be interested to know who you see as the fastest lowerstate team and the best lowerstate players. How do you think the two regions will match up from what you know?

I think we're in for a good year of playoffs from both regions.

I wanted to recognize my 7 seniors from Loris High School who will complete their season in the coming weeks. We had our senior night night last night and it was nice to see the support from everyone. These started a program last year at the school and have set the tone for the players that follow.

Loris 2 v Aynor 0; Aynor came to play and it was 0-0 at half but Loris was able to put 2 away are strong play by the team and not giving up.

The Seniors were Hannah Rion, Candice Matthews, Kelsey Melzer, Felica Watts, Crystal Sukalski, Kayla Reilly, and Amelia Scronce

All current Byrnes boys players should rest assured, that no "Adult" blames them for their current situation, or condition. Actually the team and school had the talent to be successful. As I understand it some are moving to the next level. I hope you really understand my voice has been one of concern not distain for you, the athlete. Good luck...
