I attended the Girls State Championships this past weekend. I noticed in the AAAA game were Wando beat Mauldin the coaching style of the Wando coach gave them the edge. Coach Champ had the confidence in her bench to insert them into the game to give the starters a rest. On the other side of the field Coach Czar only used two of his bench players the entire game. I believe one starter was slightly injured. The Mauldin girls were very tired at the end of the game and Wando started pressing into the defense third thus be awarded the corner kick which netted the winning goal. I have been following the posting on this message board all year and some of the previous post spoke of the amount of talent Mauldin has on there team. My question for the coaches reading this is "Why would you not sub players during the championship game to give them some rest?".

Congratulations to the Wando team and coaches as repeating state champions. Congratulations to Mauldin on the fine playoff run to the final game.

Are you the parent of a Mauldin reserve player....or just a casual observer of the 4A title match?

..... a college student with possible interest in coaching. In the previous games that day both coaches used their bench often. It was a warm day and I understand the field was wider than a high school field.

With a bench as deep as Wando, Shannon can substitute all day long and not affect the play on the field. During a regular season game, she subbed @ 22 times to our teams 6. During playoffs she only subbed @ 10 times but even in OT play, her girls still had the fresh legs.

She has the respect of the girls on that team, solid defense and top notch goalie. They are going to definitely be the team to beat again next year even with the loss of her seniors, their goalie to soccer school in Fl, and a rising junior who is moving to upstate. As long as Shannon is at the helm, they will still be virtually unstoppable.

No doubt..Wando trains their school team like they are playing challenge club ball..There is no difference from their Fall training to their Spring training..There is no you get to play because you are a senior..You get to play because you earned it no matter what grade you are in..

Wando players work hard all year long. I think their Spring training is harder....practice more days per week, and they are in the weight room.

Backrow2,

Do you have any idea what the incoming talent will be for Wando 2009.

I guess the answer to the question is "no answer". Since this post has been (how do you say) "hijacked" to discuss other subjects. I will go back to just reading this message board.
