Top-Ranked Wake Forest Edges No. 20 Furman In Exhibition Soccer 1-0

Winston-Salem, N.C. -- Wake Forest’s Cody Arnoux scored in the 36th minute to lift the top-ranked Demon Deacons to a 1-0 victory over No. 20 Furman in preseason men’s soccer action Saturday evening at Spry Stadium.

Furman and Wake Forest each registered five shots apiece in the first half, but the defending national champions notched the game’s only goal just 10 minutes before the break. Senior Evan Brown played a cross from the far right side of the field into the box. The ball found Arnoux seven
yards out and the junior found the back of the net for the lone tally.

“Furman is a very quality team,” Wake Forest coach Jay Vidovich said. “They’re very well organized for this time of year. They had a very good game plan. We feel good about a victory over a quality opponent. I think they’re going to have a fantastic year.”

The Demon Deacons managed a 13-8 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Josh Zimmer recorded three saves in goal for Furman, including a diving stop in the second half to keep the Paladins within a goal. Wake Forest’s Akira Fitzgerald notched one save to earn the shutout.

Furman will open its regular season August 31, at UNC Wilmington.
