Furman Blanks Coastal Carolina In Women’s Soccer Season Opener, 2-0

Greenville, S.C. ­ Freshmen Rachel Shelnutt and Alexa Jones each netted their first collegiate goal to lift Furman over Coastal Carolina 2-0 in the Paladins’ season opener Friday evening at the Select Kickoff Classic at Stone Stadium.

Shelnutt slid onto the end of a Kate Myatt cross at the far post in the 36th minute to poke a shot into the left corner and open the scoring. Jones added a late insurance goal just 1:56 from full time as Sara El-Shami fed Lucy Martin down the left side and the Peachtree City, Ga., product slotted a pass across the face of goal for Jones to fire into the net.

“The hard work this team put in during the preseason definitely paid dividends tonight,” said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. “We got a great effort out of freshmen like Rachel Shelnutt and Katya Gokhman who proved they were ready to make an immediate impact. Briana da Mota was also
solid in goal.”

Furman (1-0-0) held a commanding 14-2 edge in shots in did not allow the Chanticleers (0-3-0) to piece together a serious threat on goal over the final 45 minutes. Dam Mota notched two saves to claim the victory while Amy Haggard made three stops for Coastal Carolina.

In game one of the tournament, Canisius exploded for four first half goals on its way to a 5-1 victory over Wofford (0-2-1). Sylvia Kowalski tallied two goals, including the game winner in the fourth minute, to boost the Golden Griffin attack. Kelly Reinwald added a goal and two assists as Canisius improved to 1-0-0.

The Select Kickoff Classic continues Sunday with Furman hosting Canisius at noon and Wofford battling Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m.

Furman, Canisius Play To 1-1 Draw In Select Kickoff Classic Final

Greenville, S.C. ­ Freshman Martha Hall tallied her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute to help Furman to a 1-1 draw with Canisius on the final day of the Select Kickoff Classic at Stone Soccer Stadium on Sunday

Canisius (1-0-1) claimed the tournament title on goal differential after downing Wofford 5-1 on Friday evening. The Golden Griffins took an early lead on the Paladins in Sunday’s first game when Meagan Jones buried a 12-yard shot off of assists from Rebecca Shupe and Kasey Makowski at the
4:43 mark.

Furman (1-0-1) controlled the majority of possession and held a 24-9 advantage in shots and 10-2 edge in shots on goal, but did not find the net until the 57:41 mark. Katya Gokhman played a pass to Sara El-Shami who played a cross-field pass in the path of Hall to set up the Knoxville, Tenn., native’s first career goal.

The Paladins managed a 3-1 edge in shots over two overtime periods, but neither team could find the back of the net for a golden goal.

Briana da Mota registered one save in 45 minutes for Furman while freshman Jessica Smith was not forced to make a stop on her first 45 minutes in goal for Furman. Carolina Robert recorded nine saves for Canisius.

In game two on Sunday, Emily McColl netted a goal on either side of halftime to guide Coastal Carolina (1-3-0) to a 2-0 victory over Wofford (0-3-1).

McColl opened the scoring in the eighth minutes hammering a shot from 24 yards out to beat Terrier keeper Katie McChesney. She doubled the Chanticleers’ lead at 68:48 with a 32-yard volley off of a pass from Corrie Coles for the final margin.

Coastal Carolina held a 19-4 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Amy Haggard stopped two shots to notch the shutout in goal.
