Furman Blanks Bowling Green In Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational, 2-0

Greenville, S.C. ­ Andrew Krysiak and Brooks Duff each netted a goal in the final 10 minutes to help Furman to a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green on the opening day of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational at Stone Stadium Friday evening.

The win improved the Paladins to 1-1-0 on the season while Bowling Green slipped to 0-2-0.

Krysiak received a pass from Patrick Murray and laced a shot past Falcon keeper Paul Shoemaker into the righthand corner at 80:34 to open the scoring.

“It was good to get a win tonight,” said Furman head coach Doug Allison. “ I was especially happy for Andrew to get that first goal for us.” Duff doubled the lead less than five minutes later. Dane Roberts beat his man down the right side and played a pass back into the middle of the box. Duff, a sophomore, had his first shot blocked, but collected the rebound and deposited his second effort from 12 yards to give Furman a 2-0 lead.

Furman had several chances to break the deadlock in the first half, but Shoemaker made a sliding save on a Krysiak effort and then denied back-to-back shots from Krysiak and Warren Creavalle to keep the match at 0-0.

The Falcons were reduced to 10 men at 53:19 when Vuk Krkeljic was issued his second yellow card and sent off. Furman managed to wrestle away the majority of possession for the rest of the match and build a final 19-5 edge in shots and 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Josh Zimmer registered the shutout for the Paladins with two saves. Shoemaker turned away six shots in for Bowling Green.

In the day’s first match, four different Washington Huskies netted goals, including three in the second half, on their way to a 4-1 victory over the College of Charleston.

Raphael Cox opened the scoring with a low shot that deflected into the lefthand corner in the 12th minute. After the halftime break, Brent Richards and Adam Lang tallied goals at 48:08 and 49:39, respectively, to push the Huskies to a 3-0 lead.

Dylan Tucker-Gangnes, who assisted on the Lang goal, headed in a Lang cross in the 55th minute to extend the lead to 4-0.

Kareem Yearwood netted a goal at the 55-minute mark on a header to help the Cougars avoid the shutout.

Washington held a 15-6 advantage in shot attempts. Husky keeper Stephen Fung recorded the victory in net while Brendan Smith stopped three shots for the Cougars in the loss.

The Falcons face College of Charleston at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at Stone Stadium while Furman hosts Washington in the tournament finale at 1:30 p.m.

Washington Shuts Out Furman In Diadora/Spinx Invitational Finale, 4-0

Greenville, S.C. ­ Brent Richards scored two first half goals and George John added a goal and an assist in the second half to lead the University of Washington to a 4-0 victory over Furman in men’s soccer action Sunday at the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational.

The Huskies, 2-2 on the season, claimed the tournament title with their second victory of the weekend as the Paladins slipped to 1-2-0 on the year.

Richards opened the scoring at 8:50 when John played a diagonal ball to the right corner of the box. Richards took a touch past Furman keeper Josh Zimmer and buried the shot for his second goal of the season. In the 20th minute, Raphael Cox picked out Richards in the center of the box and the forward lined a shot into the right corner off of a counter attack to increase the lead to 2-0.

Furman owned the majority of possession through the middle of the game, but the Huskies managed to add to the lead at 65:14 when John’s shot from seven yards glanced off of the cross bar and into the net. Three minutes later Jo Jo Katz received a centering pass from Daniel Phelps and deposited the shot for the final 4-0 margin.

Furman held an 11-8 edge in shots but managed to put only one shot on frame to the Huskies’ six shots on target. Rylan Hawkins recorded the save in goal with one save while Zimmer stopped two shots fo Furman.

Richards garnered the tournament’s offensive mvp honors while John took defensive mvp accolades.

In the first game of the day, Matt Morris scored on a header from point-blank range in the 11th minute to help the College of Charleston top Bowling Green 2-0.

David Munson scored off of an assist from Zach Prince to double the lead in the 78th minute and Brendan Smith rebounded from Friday night’s 4-1 loss to Washington with a shutout on Sunday notching four saves.

Furman continues play next weekend when it faces nationally-ranked Brown in the opening game of the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Charleston, S.C., at 5 p.m.
