Furman’s Smith Named SoCon Women’s Soccer Player Of The Week
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman’s Jessica Smith has been named Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after picking up two wins in goal, including the first victory over Clemson in program history, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The freshman goalkeeper tallied four saves on Friday evening as Furman rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Tigers before a crowd of 2,217 at Stone Soccer Stadium. It marked the first triumph for the Paladins versus Clemson in 13 all-time series meetings.
On Monday night, Smith made four save, including two leaping efforts to tip shots over the bar, on her way to recording a 1-0 overtime shutout at USC Upstate.
A native of Franklin, Tenn., Smith posted eight saves and a 0.50 goals against average over 181 minutes in net this week while improving her record to 4-0-1 as the Paladins’ netminder.
Furman, 6-2-1 on the season, opens SoCon play on Thursday when it hosts Davidson in a rematch of last season’s SoCon Tournament semifinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
