Furman Downs Belmont, Claims Atlantic-Sun/SoCon Challenge Title, 3-1

Nashville, Tenn. ­ Freshman Coleton Henning netted a pair of goals as Furman downed Belmont 3-1 and claimed the A-Sun/SoCon Challenge championship Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn.

The victory, Furman’s fourth straight, improves the Paladins to 5-4-1 on the season. Belmont slipped to 5-4-0.

Henning gave the Paladins an early lead at 4:34 taking a pass from Andrew Krysiak and sliding a shot past the Bruin keeper. In the 66th minute, Henning cleaned up the rebound off of a Caleb Suri shot to net his second goal.

After an own goal gave the Paladins a 3-0 lead at 67:33, Brett Parker scored in the 83rd minute to help Belmont avoid the shutout.

The Bruins outshot the Paladins 13-9 and held a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. Alec Kann made seven saves in goal to earn the victory for Furman.

The Paladins open Southern Conference play October 4, when they host rival UNC Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
