Hall Shoots Furman Past Appalachian State, 1-0

Boone, N.C. -- Freshman Martha Hall scored in the 58th minute to lift Furman to a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State in women’s soccer action Thursday evening at ASU Soccer Stadium.

The win improved the Paladins to 8-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Southern Conference while Appalachian State fell to 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

“It’s always great to go on the road and win, especially inside the conference,” said Furman coach Andrew Burr. “Martha Hall scored a great goal for us and we were able to defend well on several set pieces in the final 20 minutes.”

Hall played a ball towards Lucy Martin that was deflected by a defender back to Hall. The Knoxville, Tenn., native dribbled into the box, cut back to the middle of the box and lined a 12-yard shot into the right side for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.

Fellow freshman Jessica Smith recorded the shutout to improve to 6-0-1 in goal. The Paladins outshot the Mountaineers 11-2, including 6-0 in shots on goal.

Furman continues its road trip when it travels to Western Carolina for a 2 p.m. Southern Conference contest on Sunday.
