Western Carolina Blanks Furman Women’s Soccer, 1-0
Cullowhee, N.C. -- Erin Hamilton scored on an assist from Shannon Fowkes with less than nine minutes remaining as Western Carolina blanked Furman 1-0 in Southern Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday at the Catamount Soccer Complex.
Western Carolina improved to 7-5-0 overall and a perfect 4-0 in SoCon play. Furman slipped to 8-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.
Furman outshot the Catamounts 15-9, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, but Hamilton took advantage of a misplayed ball in the back and notched the game’s only goal with a shot over the head of Paladin keeper Jessica Smith at 81:25.
Smith made one save in the loss for Furman while Western Carolina’s stopped four shots to record the shutout for the Catamounts.
The Paladins threatened several times during the match but could not break through against Williams. Furman’s best chance came early in the second half when Lucy Martin hit the cross bar. The win marked the fourth straight shutout for the Catamounts.
Furman resumes SoCon play on Friday when it travels to new league member Samford. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
