Cress Powers Samford Past Furman, 3-0

Birmingham, Ala. -- Junior Amber Cress scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Samford blanked Furman 3-0 in Southern Conference women’s soccer action Friday night in Birmingham, Ala.

With the win, Samford improved to 4-8-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the SoCon. Furman, losers of two straight SoCon matches, fell to 8-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Cress put the Bulldogs ahead in the 28th minute finishing in front of net off a deflection and assists from Leah Leppert and Natalie Fleming. At the 59:21 mark, Cress dribbled around the Furman keeper and put away her second goal of the night to double the Samford lead.

Leppert capped the 3-0 victory scoring her first goal of the season on assists from Cress and Caroline Baxter at 86:08.

Both teams attempted 15 shots with Samford holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Alyssa Whitehead notched the shutout for the Bulldogs turning away six shots while Jessica Smith recorded four saves for Furman.

Furman will return home to host SoCon foe Chattanooga on Sunday at Stone Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
