SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced on Thursday its Academic All-Conference teams for the 2008 fall season. A total of 291 student-athletes, representing all twelve Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.

Wofford College had the most individuals selected with 44 honorees, followed by Elon with 35 and The Citadel with 26.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. The 291 student-athletes averaged a 3.55 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

This is the seventh year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The league’s women’s soccer teams placed 71 student-athletes on the academic team, with football adding 54.

Wofford’s 2008 NCAA FCS Playoff football team led the conference in honorees with 17. The Terriers also had six women’s soccer student-athletes, four women’s cross country, nine men’s soccer, three men’s cross country and five volleyball honored by the conference.
