I believe there were others also who made the region team roster, but for various reasons are not traveling with the team to Costa Rica.

This teams 2008-2009 GKs are Cody Mizell from GA and Stephen Arneson from SC. Bradley Bugg from SC was on the 1991 Region III Team for the the prior season I believe.

Mizell 2010 I think is either on the National team or has made the team in past years. He is the real deal!

Bugg 2009 Coastal Carolina... great hands, great distribution, played in Europe, a huge asset to Coastal.

Arneson class of 2010, being recruited by several in-state and out-of-state schools currently.

Those chosen for the USYS region III team must first have participated in the STATE level of ODP. They were then chosen from the states they represented at region camp over the summer. Zach nor Taylor participated with the ODP team for SC.

Official update from Kevin Laux in Costa Rica

The first match was against Heredia, a team from just outside San Jose. After adjusting to the accelerated speed of play, the boys settled down, scored a goal from Dennis Moore and came away with a hard fought 1-0 win! Bradley Bugg earned the MVP performance aided by two massive saves in the last five minutes of the match to seal the victory. Region III was the only American team to come through the first round of matches with a victory. Post-match, the teams gathered for a group photo and MVP award presentations.

I'd say South Carolina was well represented on the Region III squad.

You go Dennis Moore!!!!

Costa Rica Soccer Tours has done an amazing job with ODP 91 Boys. If you want to get a little taste of what an international soccer trip feels like... check out this site. Also, look at the cultural dancing on the videos which include some of the players.

Game summary
The Championship match started disappointingly as Region III gave up an early goal then fell behind by 2 midway through the first half. The atypically dissapointing first half performance was given a boost when Jason Chapman got behind the defense and pulled one back for Region III just before halftime. The goal restored a bit of momentum and confidence which was buoyed by Coach Suhnholtz inspirational halftime speech. The second half started much like the first ended with Chapman once again getting behind the defense to slot the ball past the Alajuela goalkeeper, this time tying the score. The stalemate wouldn't last long, as Alajuela went ahead again off of near post finish from a corner kick. It would prove to be the last goal they would get, but not the last they would need. Region III, relying on effectiveness over quality soccer, equalized again through Kevin Cabello, when he headed over the goalkeeper from Alex Hutchins' long throw-in. Hutchins' long throw would prove to be Alajuela's undoing, when another Hutchins' throw caused confusion in the box that led to an own goal with five minutes left to give Region III the championship. It was an incredible match, made even more impressive by the fact that Region III played much of the second half a man down after David Dodge received his second yellow card for a hard tackle. But the passion Dodge showed in the tackle ultimately transferred to his teammates and helped inspire the win. The night and the tour culminated with a closing ceremony with all of the participating teams. A slide show of the week's pictures was presented as was the championship trophy. Coach Suhnholtz reflected on the tournament and the boys performance by saying he had not won a tournament in such a dramatic fashion in his entire career. Kevin Laux, University of Mobile

Additional notes:
In the 2 years that the U17 ODP Regional teams have played in Costa Rica, this years Region III team is the first to win any games against the Costa Rica u17 National team or any of the 3 semi-pro teams. The semi-pro teams consist of 18-24 year olds who provide the 5 substitute positions for their respective pro teams. In the closing ceremonies, the Region III ’91 team received a standing ovation from their peer US teams.

Shrink Rapp,

Thank you for the details of the final match. What a great performance for a US team to win a final a man down. Every player must have been thrilled with the finish.

Congrats!

Jason Chapman Spartanburg SC scored 2 goals in Championship game
Ryan Goodwin Huntersville NC marked and shut down best opposing team player in tournament
