To demonstrate the competitiveness of the Palmetto Cup, it is quite amazing that not one team left the tournament "unscathed" (either a loss or tie on their record).

All told, there were 6 ties (18.2%), 11 one-goal matches (33.3%), 8 two-goal matches (24.2%), 4 matches decided by three goals or more (12.1%), and the 4 forfeits (12.1%) by R.B. Stall in the three-day event that featured 33 matches.

There were a total of 92 goals scored in 29 matches (excluding the four forfeits) for an average of 3.16 goals per game (92 x 80 = 7,360 / 2,330). Great, exciting high school soccer!!!

THOSE THAT WERE AT THE TOURNAMENT KNOW WHO THE BEST KEEPER WAS.A 6'3" 190 LBS KID FROM PORTER GAUD.EVEN THE TOURNAMENT STAFF SAID THAT.IT IS A SHAME HE DID NOT MAKE THE ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM.HOWEVER,WE ALL KNOW WHAT HE HAS DONE SINCE THE 8TH GRADE.

ALLTHE BIG SOCCER SCHOOLS MISSED OUT ON GETTING A GREAT KEEPER AND DON'T SAY I DIDN'T TELL YOU.THE PC COACH SAW HIS TALENTS AT FURMAN CAMP LAST SUMMER (HE WAS AN ALL AMERICAN KEPPER) AND WENT HARD AFTER THIS KID.HE HAS CHOSEN A FINE COACH AND SCHOOL TO PLAY COLLEGE SOCCER.NOT ONLY DOES HE HAVE SOCCER SKILLS,HE IS ALSO STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT,HONOR STUDENT,CAPTAIN OF THE STATE BASKETBALL TEAM,STARTING POINT GUARD AND THIS LIST GOES ON.

I'd like to thank all of the teams that participated in the Palmetto Cup this past weekend. Congratulations to Spring Valley on a well-played tournament and very deserving championship.

Also kudos to Porter-Gaud and Christ Church for representing the "smaller" schools so well. These teams are always well coached and disciplined and it was nice to see a SCISA school and Class 1A school in the finals and semifinals respectively.

I would also like to thank our volunteers that help run the tournament. It is an awesome undertaking and pulling it off would not be possible without our hard working staff!

Thanks again to all who participated, attended, or worked the tournament for making the Palmetto Cup a quality soccer experience for our prep players!

JBO -- You are absolutely correct in your assessment of Porter-Gaud goalkeeper Mark Owens. Not only is he a tremendous talent in the net, but one of the classiest young men that I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

After the tourney, he personally thanked me for having Brookland-Cayce host the tournament and the fact that he felt that his team's participation in the Palmetto Cup the last four years was one of the highlights of his prep soccer career. That is a great testament to his stature as a person!

Good luck to Mark and the Cyclones on the remainder of the 2003 season and best wishes at Presbyterian College. I look forward to keeping up with his progress at the collegiate level the next four years.

Dadgum guys - I've been trying to tell y'all for two years now about Owens. I know my son is looking forward to being able to play PG next year without him in the net.

Congratulations on a great tournament. I know Pinewood will benefit from having participated.
