4/27 in Greenville Ben Lippen-2 St. Joseph's-1
Goals: BLS-Sammi Osman, Lauren Jones; SJ-Mary Stanton
Big region win on the road for our girls tonight! Came out strong and dominated the field. 1-0 at the half. Controlled the ball most of the 2nd into a 2-0 lead. St. Joe's scored with 10 to play on a beautiful direct kick from outside the box. Girls played extremely hard and very proud of the effort from all of them tonight! Keep up the hard work, girls! Heading back to Greenville area tomorrow to face Southside Christian.

Mauldin 6 Boiling Springs 0
After the last game on 04/23 my words on the game were
"It took Mauldin some time to figure out the novel BS defense with all 10 players sprinting upfield most times Mauldin had the ball"
This time around Mauldin were 4 goals up inside the first 20 minutes against the same BS defensive strategy. There was little if any attempt to attack Mauldin.
Could someone comment on the game against Dorman where Dorman were held to a single goal win?. Goals: Schaidle 2; Carter; Withey 2; Smith. Assists: Carter; Smith 2; Simpson

Blue Ridge 3, Broome 2 (PK's 3-0)
I told you Broome was good. They are going to give somebody a lot of trouble in the playoffs. Especially #4 - TOUGH, solid player. And I believe maybe a 10th grader. Man, they are team oriented, pass driven (6-7 passes every possession), and really come after you.

Goals: Kirsten Smith, Rita Walsh, Carrie Settle
Excellent play from our girls tonight, especially after a hard fought win last night and back to back road trips to Greenville. Making that drive two days in a row on the bus is hard, but our girls came out ready to play! Up 1-0 at the half and held SCS in check all night. Our defense shut down their scoring chances and the midfield controlled the tempo most of the night. SCS has a very talented group and will be a contender in the playoffs. Great game!

Dadburngummit!!!!! Thought it was a great game actually. A bit physical but clean from both sides and the refs did a good job of calling the fouls but letting the girls play as well. Classy game on both sides of the ball I think......maybe next time we will get 'em.... Also, it was a real pleasure to meet the senior- and from what I understand the wiser- Coach Roseberry this evening as well. tk

Swansea-0 Dreher-1 The lone goal came from a pk. My keeper actually stopped the first try, but a Dreher player ran inside the box and the ref gave them a second opportunity. I was puzzled by the whole thing. Dreher played solid d and was able to thwart our attacks.

Congratulations to Woodruff Girls JV Coach Fran Thomas and the entire JV team. The Woodruff JV girls came up short Tuesday night against a talented Riverside team. 2-0 The match was very evenly played, with just a couple of keeper errors. This was the first loss for Woodruff since the JV program was started in the 2007 season. Keep up the hard work ladies. Great facilities in Woodruff.

Let's do that sir, but remind me to start the paperwork well before you head this way to get permission to do so- Believe it or not the pond is off limits for fishing even for staff. HOWEVER- for visiting dignitaries I would hope we could get a few strings pulled so we could put a couple of strings in.

I believe that the school district forbids fishing due to the continual baptisms in the Stumpduck Memorial Pond.

The pond is nothing. Wait til you see their practice fields: Arnold 1, Stumpduck 2, Tony A, Tony B, and Tony To Be Named Later. The University of Dorman has nothing on Blythewood!

Here is the pond/school at twilight: http://www.ladybengalsoccer.com/directions_files/page0020.htm
ROH-- Next time I am up that way my daughter, son, and I may very well take you up on that offer, although I will probably bring crickets. Yea, I am a bait snob and prefer the jumpers to the crawlers.
Sounds like I need to figure out a way to have a soccer/fishing fundraiser over the summer.....
As for practice fields-- scuttlebutt says that Lacrosse is going to get their own practice field next year- Congrats to the Lady Bengal Lacrosse team by the way for winning state last weekend. tk

We got crickets. We got corn. We got chewing tobacco (don't use it for fishing though; not that many fish that chew). Hang dowgit, we got hot dogs. You come, we'll use every thing but a cherry bomb to haul in some of them little snappers.
Postnote: I have lived here 5 years and haven't caught one fish. My 5 year old nephew caught two in 15 seconds and holds the family record. Postpostnote: I really, really don't know anything about fishing but love to try it.

Berkeley/Wando JV and varsity girls' matches tonight canceled due to gross neglect of common sense. Without any commmunication with our athletic department, the district office sent a crew to spread fresh fertilizer on all our athletic fields during the school day today.
No word on whether a makeup date at this point will be possible.

Yeah, why would anyone be using soccer, baseball, or softball fields during the last weeks of spring sports season?
Been doing this for 13 years now...never in my life had a game called on account of fertilizer before.
At least, not the store-bought kind.

Just reading your posts over time it sure seems that your school and program can really muck things up on a continuous basis. Good luck down there in the swamps of Lake Moultrie.

Coach Chass, not that I miss driving to Moncks Corner from Mt P, but was looking forward to seeing your team play again. It was great seeing them all play so well. Your goalie made some near impossible saves last night. Wow, the bullet she punched up over the goal was incredible.
Your kids have to be the most sportsmanlike athletes of any sport I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Your positive coaching did not go unnoticed by the Wando parents and your example is mirrored by your players. We enjoyed watching them play.

Thanks, WB...the girls were really disappointed about tonight's match. They look forward to playing Wando--it's a great opportunity for them to push themselves and develop, and the Wando girls have always played us with class and sportsmanship no matter how close or lopsided the score has been. Last night was probably the best and hardest we have played all season--the best always seem to bring out the best in us.
My apologies to all the Wando players, coaches, and fans for the district goof!!

Silly little man. It is only 4 months to football. If you put fresh fertilizer (hopefully not REALLY fresh if you know what I mean) they will have beautiful green fields for the boys of fall. Try putting down fertilizer in September and watch how long you are employed.

TL Hanna 3 Westside 0
A clean, very fast, hard fought game between the only two AAAA schools within the Anderson City limits. A few starters missing from both sides, but an athletic affair, held at the Anderson Civic Center instead of at TL Hanna due to the Region I-AAAA track meet.
Shots - TL Hanna - 24 / Westside - 7 Corners - TL Hanna - 4 / Westside - 0 Cards - None
Best of luck to TL Hanna vs Riverside tomorrow night and in the playoffs. They clinch the Region I-AAAA crown with a 10-0 record, while Westside (4-5) faces Greenwood next Wednesday to determine the 3rd and 4th seed.

Greenville 3 Wade Hampton (G) 4 (OT)
Everybody loves our "Anti-Catenacccio" style of play. I guess our Lady Raiders enjoy entertaining spectators on both sides because we are always good for at least 1-2 goals against us, too. After being 2-0 ahead after 35 minutes, we beat ourselves tonight thanks to 4 individual defensive blackouts.
Shots: 22 GHS 7 WHHS
Corners: 5 GHS 1 WHHS
Still can't believe we lost this game in the last minute of overtime, but the Lady Generals knew how to use their physical superiority to their advantage...

At Blythewood
Blythewood 3 Lancaster 2
I may get blasted by those who have a different opinion of how the game went but I have finally got to say something about refs letting absolute crazy fouls go uncalled and also need to ask when did the cross your arms and trap the ball to the ground with your arms technique become legal?
Oh... never mind....
On to the positives- In their first season in the 4A ranks and in an season FULL of injuries and necessary adjustments the Lady Bengals earn a 3rd place spot in Region 4 behind Ridge View and Spring Valley, will finsh with a winning Regular Season record, and the girls seem to be gelling at just the right time to try and make a playoff run for a few games.
Finally- A special thanks to the "Rowdies" who came out to support the Ladies tonight!!!!

Growing up, refs never used to call handballs on you if you had your arms cross over or tucked in to protect your chest--despite it being theoretically cushioned, being smacked the wrong way in the chest can REALLY hurt. Of course, a true "chest trap" receives the ball on the upper half of the chest and you cushion it down, so that was usually reserved for if you got in the way of someone's kick and really didn't want the pain.
If the arms aren't tucked in flush or it's an obvious attempt to trap the ball by someone using inappropriate technique though, it was always called.
Whether that's the rule or how it was done, I have zero clue, but that's just my experience as a female player of many years.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; [it] is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Yes ma'am I have see the "chest trap wince" from my girls on quite a few occasions and have also seen/had the inadvertent "protection handball" called and not called on many occasions likewise.
My issue on this particular night referred to a couple of 'traps' where players had their arms crossed and held out in front of themselves 6-8 inches off their chest to shield themselves from balls bouncing back up off the pitch, which they were then able to bat back down to their advantage/possession. I have not one problem with the players protecting themselves from the hard ball played directly at them, but the medium pace bouncing ball......hmmm
I know the refs are doing the best job they can do and call the games as they see it so I think my frustration regarding an additional few more injuries to the team this game and what I saw as inconsistencies by the refs helped the devil in me jump ahead of my self control and allow me to post my criticisms of the officiating tonight.
Seems I had a slight slip myself in observance of my own mantra of "style and grace" that I ask of the girls. I might need to go back and re-visit with myself about that one.
HEY- Thanks for the chance to self-reflect/criticize.

Back in the day (way to sound old, Chass) girls were allowed to cross their arms to protect the chest; the rule was that as long as the arms were crossed tightly against the chest, no foul, but if the arms came away from the chest it was illegal. That rule was changed years ago (as progress toward gender equality was made ) but every once in a while you find someone from the old school who still remembers it as legal.
I've got good news and bad news...

Most refs are male. All girls' players are female. Wonder if the lack of personal "experience" on the part of the refs makes it unreasonable to expect them to allow the girls to reasonably protect themselves.
May be we need to rethink this rule. A solid arms/crossed over the chest isn't going to gain any advantage and might really keep a serious injury from occuring.

Mauldin 4 Hillcrest 1
Mauldin supporters relaxed after their team scored a four-minute goal. However, their complacency was disturbed 15 minutes later when Hillcrest came back and equalized. Mauldin then restored a comfortable 3-1 half time lead and made the score 4-1 in the second half. Hillcrest never gave up. They could not match the Mauldin skills but determined and enthusiastic play caused Mauldin a few difficult moments.
An unusual game, as Hillcrest was the home team playing on what this season has become Mauldin’s hallowed turf. Two schools playing spring soccer with the addition of lacrosse and the grounds keeper is to be congratulated on turning a poor soccer surface into an excellent playing surface even this far into the season.
In addition, congratulations to Mauldin coach Laney Younts. His team was feisty, well balanced and fair and they were trying just as hard at the final whistle as at the game start. They were the first Hillcrest Girls soccer team to score on Mauldin in several years. Mauldin was the first team this season to beat Hillcrest by more than one goal.
Goals: Mauldin: Simpson; Whitney; Young; Schaidle Assists: Shaidle; Carter; Whatley; Boswell
Goal: Hillcrest: Devita

The rule is: "A player shall be penalized for deliberately handling, carrying, striking or propelling the ball with a hand or arm."
If a player is protecting herself without deliberately handling, etc, it is not a foul. If, however, in the judgement of the referee, she is guilty of deliberately handling the ball, it is a foul.
As usual, it comes down to the judgement of the official who is human and can make mistakes. Referees are a very necessary part of the game, but they can make mistakes and those are also a part of the game.
A baseball umpire once said, "There's balls and there's strikes, but they ain't nothin' until I call 'em."

It seems that female players are at a higher risk to get called for handling the ball versus their male counterparts although both have the same intention: protecting their bodies from painful impact. But the girls have to raise their arms whereas the boys go into a FK-wall with hands down protecting their private parts (already deliberately handling ).

ah, nothing like a rousing postmodernist debate of reality versus perception!
I think the handball call is the most subjective rule we have and it really drives me nuts how inconsistently refs apply it.

Correct, I messed up; Laney Younts is the Hillcrest coach as well as being a former Hillcrest player and a popular and dependable recreational player.
My need to correct the error also gives me the chance to congratulate the Mauldin team, and Coach Kevin Czar and his Assistants on becoming the Region II AAAA Champions.

An apology for a post that was misunderstood.
It has been brought to my attention that the remarks I made yesterday may have been misunderstood. In no way was I trying to say that the officials were the reason for the very close 3-2 game last night with Lancaster.
The general tone of my message was supposed to be towards the refs not calling fouls on either team and quite honestly I think letting the game get out of hand from both sides. I saw what I considered to be fouls committed by my girls that were not called as well as ones that I thought should have been called against the Lancaster girls.
It was not my intention to bash the fine game the Lancaster Ladies played last night but rather to point out my agreement with what has been an often repeated theme this year on the boards that on some occasions the officiating has been less than stellar- both ways- of course the same could be said about my coaching from time to time which is why I went back and made the comment about how I know the refs are doing the best job they can.
Please accept an apology from me if my post came across as anything other than a comment towards the reffing. It was not my intention to disparage the Lancaster soccer program in any way. It was a tough and physical game on BOTH sides with what I considered to be fouls committed by BOTH sides that went uncalled or addressed properly.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I once read in a coaching book that a match where the refs made correct calls 85% of the time was considered correctly refereed. I thought it was interesting to apply a given percentage to a decision (a call) that often was a 50/50 or subjective evaluation!

Probably ought to start a thread just on refs, but I'll jump in. One referee instructor I know says that if you never ever call a foul for intentionally handling the ball, you'll be 95% right. At the skill level of high school girls, most handballs are not intentional. Safety and fairness. These are the principle concerns of referees. It drives me nuts to hear a ref say that he or she wants to "let the girls play," or that "the game should be decided by the players." It's not being decided by the players unless they are playing within the laws. Finally, when are we going to address sliding tackles? Most of the players I've seen don't know how to slide tackle safely. I've had two players injured this year from sliding tackles, and many close calls. Sliding studs up or sliding from behind (getting the ball or not) is simply against the laws of the game, not to mention dangerous. Dangerous sliding tackles are more closely monitored in the EPL than in the SCHSL. But that's not to say that our losses this year were anyone's fault but our own. I just want the girls to be as safe as possible, given the physical nature of the game.

too many refs show no respect for the girl’s game and let play get way out of hand. they resist giving out cards which allow the more physical players to continue to play rough increasing the chance of injury. i don’t blame players that play physical but they must know there are limits and being carded keep them in check. Ref will call the games tight with the boys but let everything go when it comes to the girls.

This wraps up Ben Lippen as 7-3 in the region and 12-7 overall. Finished tied for 2nd in the region with St. Joseph's and the #2 seed in playoffs next week. ACS seemed much improved from the earlier game this year. Good end to the regular season. A new season begins...

This was a great match. I thought both South Aiken and Aiken played very well and very physical. It is added fun to watch so many girls who are friends from club ball, church, family friends, etc play against each other because they all want to beat the snot out of each other, just for fun. Congrats to the Aiken keeper who handled 16 shots on goal. South Aiken was lucky to score on a very well placed corner. The game was in doubt for South Aiken until the very last second and even though South Aiken outshot Aiken 32 to 6 the game was very even. Aiken played very tough defense, almost a Catenaccio. Good job to both teams!

If you and an opposing coach had made an agreement that after the match that you would sit down & winner would buy, do you think that means buy just the first round or buy until we are done?
Heads up-- Mike Young is a cheap so and so.

Gaffney wins 4-3 after 7 PKs
Three games in a row with several players out, and a great proformance by the Gaffney keeper proved to be to much for Hillcrest. Three loses in PKs and one in overtime this year is giving the coach and parents a lot of grey hairs.

First ever win over Walhalla for Westside. First ever win over a region champion at any level, or a defending upper state champion. Westside also reaches 12 wins for the first time in school history.
Hard fought, aggressive match. Westside led 1-0 at the half. Walhalla equalized in the last 5 minutes off of a corner. Westside scored with under 2 minutes remaining to clinch the win!

Pinewood must have sat most of their starters. There is no way that the Ashley Hall team that played at HHP on Wednesday could have beaten the Pinewood team that played at HHP on Thursday.

It is my understanding that you are exactly correct (5 starters), however Ashley Hall still played a great game. Ashley Hall was in the right place at the right time and took advantage of the situation. They deserve the credit for sure.

Blythewood at Ridge View
First a note to anyone who is wondering but has not yet heard. Brooks is just fine- nothing broken just banged up and bruised a bit and already back home by now.
Ridge View 2 Blythewood 1

Good to hear! Great game last night.

Wow! ghs! Without two important starters! Kudos. You and Mike seem to be doing a very productive job over there. Good luck for playoffs!

Irmo wins 1-0, they scored with a few seconds to go in the first OT. Foul in the box , awarded a pk that was converted.

According to the North Carolina message boards:
Wando 1 TC Roberson 1
There was also this commentary on the Wando-AC Reynolds match:
AC Reynolds-1 Wando, SC-2
"Wando led at half-time 1-0. ACR tied it up in the 2nd half. PK for Reynolds with 10 minutes left. Wando keeper went to upper 90 to make an incredible save. Wando wins it in the final minute of play on a corner that was headed in. Ouch. Wando is 15-0-1 and ranked #1 in SC. They play at TCR tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Good luck to the Rams- represent NC!"
Sounds like a real good job by Wando.

Need somebody to update the 4/21 score of the Clover vs. Gaffney game.
There is also a Clover vs. York result missing. Neither school has the second match posted on their schedule.

Anyone know the scores for these games?
April 14: Summerville vs West Ashley April 28: West Ashley vs Summerville
These have big implications on the standings in Region VIII-AAAA.

What's the determing factor(s) in deciding R8 #4 or R7 #4 for a playoff spot.
Tomorrow...is too late.
