Question for the historians...when is the last time the same two (girls) teams met in the finals two years in a row?

Riverside and BE played in the combined AAA/AA/A classification for what must have been about 5 years in a row.

Now that you mention it, it was a BE/Woodruff matchup in '07 and '08.

As for 3A, Riverside is home and will be wearing traditional home white jerseys with red shorts and red socks

Kyle verified for me that Upper State is home and will be in light uniforms this year.

Last year Mauldin was the surprise team of the Region 2 High School season. They played the three matches before the final away from home. The journey to Lexington was a long trip for a school night, the game against Hanna went into overtime. All the games were close and exhausting. The final, although closely contested belonged to Wando as Mauldin showed fatigue in the second half resulting from an exhausting end to the season.

This year Mauldin Girls have shown great determination and confidence in all their Upper State games. They have played all but one game at home and although last Mondays game against Fort Mill went into overtime, it was territorially one sided and the bombardment of the Fort Mill goal continued unabated for a large portion of the game. The Fort Mill girls looked exhausted before the overtime period commenced and did not get a shot on goal after the first half time. Mauldin’s passing game penetrated their defense with relative ease as far as the packed penalty area.

As both Wando and Mauldin play physical but fair soccer, I do not think the refereeing will influence the outcome and on this basis, I forecast a Mauldin 2-0 victory.

Most likely the shutout is due to Mauldin having the All-State keeper in their net. It will be a muggy night in Columbia and the team with the fewest mistakes wins.

Mauldin 1, Wando 1 in regulation/OT. Mauldin 5-4 in pk's.

Riverside 2, SA 1. Redeeming last year lost to HH.

BE 3, CC 1. BE has better keeper and midfield.

I'm gonna go with Wando by 2-1 and BE with them scoring at least 2/3 goals. I know nothing about 3A, but I'll fall in on the company line and say Riverside.

Yes, thanks for the thought, you have caused me to reconsider that prediction, in last years final Mauldin had five injured starters on the bench. This year three of those girls are playing, plus the team has gained a sophomore, named ‘all state” last week. Maybe it will be 3-0.

Mauldin will be comin out on top for this one. Last year was a 2-1 thriller and and like stated earlier half the starting line up for mauldin was injured. I'm not gunna say shut up but 2 or 3-1 is lookin about right.

well, you are right i havent seen wando play and mauldin did loose to parkview but i really dont think wando is gunna pull it out. But you cant look at one game and say something like that so they lost that really doesnt mean anything.Florida lost to Ole' Miss then look where they ended up.

Gotta go with South Aiken. Great leadership from Maggie Bosley combined with some outstanding freshman could be the difference. Good luck to both SA and Riverside. Looking forward to a great match. Will be a tight one. SA-2 Riverside-1. Late goal wins it for SA.

The word from Parkview parents is their team was missing several players at the Wando game. But they were at full strength at the home game against Mauldin. Who knows which is true...as the final AAAA game will tell the state champion.

It amazes me that Wando wins back to back Championships and makes to the final for a chance to Three PEAT but never has to play a team at full strength. WOW they must just be the luckiest team in the State.

They didn't tell you, MRoss? We grow shamrocks on our field over there at Wando ;-). Goes along with our tactic of siccing the sandgnats on opposing teams and then stealing their wallets.

Preseason training is running around trying to find the pot of gold.

My question is, how did you train all the grass to shift and stay under the Wando players' feet and leave the opponents playing in sand? Leprechaun magic?

Sounds like both Mauldin and Wando are healthy, so this time tomorrow night we shouldn't be reading "well, we could've won... if". And, it should be a great game, close, between two powerhouse teams with plenty of player credentials on both sides.

That said, I think Mauldin has the edge going into the game. One of the players listed by mavsupporter absent from last year's final that can have a big impact in a championship game is Nemecek. If she shows up with her defensive game face on she can change the game. And, given her attacking skills, out of the back or at midfield, she is probably one of the most underrated players in the state.

However, the reason I believe Mauldin has the edge going in has to do with the midfield. The Lisson sisters in the midfield for Wando are a formidable duo, but I believe next year will be their year of dominance in a game of this caliber. Schaidle for Mauldin has been playing incredibly well for the last 9 months, and I believe she and her teammates at center mid will win the heated battle for control of the middle... what I think will be the difference in the game.

Moquin's direction of the defense for Wando should stifle most of the attacking efforts of the younger Mauldin forwards, but perhaps not all. The absence of Jade Davis from last year's Wando team may play a role. Not taking anything away from Amelia, but there are some younger Mauldin forwards and midfielders that will be looking for some redemption after last Fall's State Cup finals. For Mauldin, just don't go to penalty kicks... Amelia's bread-and-butter since U-11 with MPSC.

Winning goal... Schaidle from outside the 18.

Of course, what do I know... my daughter's team will be sitting at home tomorrow night. Congratulations and good luck to all those who made it to the finals.

Yes I will do that, however it would be inappropriate to convey this on a public message board, consequently will shortly send you a private message. May be you can publicly confirm that this has been done so that the interested people on this board know that I am not blowing smoke.

This depth will give Mauldin the advantage in the latter stages of the game. Coach Czar is able to substitute skill with skill.

On a different note, I would like to thank the administration at Mauldin for rescheduling the football scrimmage, allowing the football team too attend today's game. I don't know to many schools that would extend that kind of support to a girls soccer team.

1977,

Can I remind you that you were 15 minutes away from staying home tonight? The "bombardment" of the Fort Mill goal in the second half of Monday's match resulted in only one goal. There were no great chances whistling just wide, nothing hit the woodwork and the Fort Mill keeper was not forced to make any great saves. After you got the goal, you still had another 15 minutes to put the game away but despite the "relentless attack", you never mustered anything against an "exhausted" (and under-sized) Fort Mill squad.

Also, neither of your OT goals came from the run of play despite the fact that you say Mauldin's passing game penetrated the Lady Jacket defense with "relative ease".

I'm concerned about tonight?

Either you are not giving FM the credit deserved, or, you may not be quite the juggernaut you think you are? Too much Orange Koolaid?

I wish you luck......and don't underestimate Wando. Should be a great match between the two best teams in the state. Both sides earned the trip and certainly deserve to be in Columbia.

Thanks to Hurst for the more realistic view of the Mauldin/FM match. I believe that Wando and Mauldin are evenly matched, but I would go with Wando - Mauldin may be believing the fans hype (shades of Riverside/HH last year). Wando 3 Mauldin 2

AAA

Another fairly even match, but I believe that SA has an edge with the upperclassmen. Also (and taking nothing away from SA), after watching SA/HH I believe that it is just SA's year. SA 3 Riverside 1

One caveat - I am the worst prognosticater that I know. I have a brother that likes to bet a little on football, and he likes to call me before a big game, get my pick and bet against me. I believe that he can retire soon.

Sould be a great weekend in Columbia. Many, many thanks to all those that work so hard behind the scenes and/or performing less desirable roles to make these events (and those throughout the season) possible. God holds a special place for those that work so hard and selflessly - even referees and the Heise brothers

Hursts is spot on with his comments! FM only bent they never really broke after giving up the equalizer. The Mauldin attack was well run but could not get through the determined defense of the younger and small Jackets. That said they did control the ball very well and FM was playing to deny the score more than to work the ball out for a scoring opportunity.
In over time Mauldin did look fresher and had the benefit of a couple of calls to help put them over the top (not saying bad or good call, just that both score came off of them).
I will say this though if Wando lets Mauldin control the all in the middle 1/3 like FM did then they are in trouble too. Mauldin plays the ball out of the air as well as any girls team I have ever seen, almost every girl puts the header in play to a teammate.

Good Luck Mavs

Wando/Eastside was a shortened game at Viking Cup. A full 80 minutes and Wando would definately win by more goals (sorry, eastside b/c you did play great) I wouldn't count on any gimme goals tonight.

I agree with Hurst, the two best teams in the state are meeting tonight. It was a great match last year and I'm sure both teams will give a great game tonight. Wando and Mauldin each earned the trip and deserve to be there.

I also agree with another post that it may come down to the team who makes the fewest mistakes.

Wando 3, Mauldin 1

Everyone have a safe trip!

Many thanks for the good wishes. Fort Mill had a wonderful run and gave Mauldin the hardest test they have had in the region, we were pleased you beat Dorman as this would have been the fourth time Mauldin would have had to have beat them in a row. We certainly didn't expect even sterner opposition from Fort Mill.

After reading 1977"s PM to me, I would agree Mauldin has a stronger attack than last year. Good luck to everyone, it's going to be a great game.
