After handling a family emergency, getting the first match underway, and getting the new air card configured , we are live at Memorial Stadium for the Girls' AA/A State Championship match!

Currently Bishop England leads Christ Church Episcopal School by a score of 1 to nil on a Lizzy Daly goal in the fourth minute of the match. The goal, from 25 yards at around the corner of the penalty area, hit the side netting upper ninety out of the reach of Cavalier goalkeeper Erica Clinton.

More updates to follow, as well as stats and text commentary as we find time to post. We've played 45 minutes...

Two fouls by Bishop England while the Cavaliers were advancing down the pitch led to a free kick from right near where B-E scored in the first half. Alyssa Althoff took the free kick and it, too, found the top left half of the goal over Erika Christensen for the equalizer on 50 minutes!

Penalty given! A handball in the area results in a penalty. The Bishops' Elizabeth Miller calmly stroked the ball to the left of goalkeeper Erica Clinton, and the Bishops regain the lead.

We are 33 minutes into the second match between Lower State Champions South Aiken and Upper State Champions Riverside, still a scoreless draw. Riverside's Hannah Allison was just booked in a somewhat controversial call with the player, coaching staff and fans all claiming it was the wrong player. Nonetheless her name is now in the book with a caution. A good match thus far, as each team is even on shots at 3 apiece, 8 fouls against South Aiken to 6 for the Warriors.

Three Quarters of an hour played at the Memorial Grounds ... and it is getting physical. Riverside have had two or three very good opportunities at the North end of the pitch, culminating in a corner sent into the area but over the crossbar for the Warriors.

GOAL!

Riverside 1:0 South Aiken on 48'

The attacks continue for both squads, and on a Riverside drive an apparent foul was not called in order to play the advantage. The Warrior's freshman all-stater Natalie Lackey showed fine composure and finished to put the Upper State champions on top.

Referee Kevin McLear is on his game. An apparent handball by Riverside just outside the area is not whistled so that avantage could be played. Nothing developed quickly and the call was then made. The free kick by Maggie Bosley went straight into the wall, though, and was cleared by the Warriors. We have played 56 minutes at the Memorial Grounds in the AAA Girls' State Championship.

Still a great match, but it is mostly on the Riverside half of the pitch at the hour mark. A sweetly lofted pass in the area from Hannah Allison to Natalie Lackey led to a great opportunity for the Warriors, but Lackey's shot went just a few inches over the crossbar. After an hour, Riverside still lead 1:0.

Don't count out the Thoroughbreds yet ... just under ten minutes to play and a ball finds its way to the feet of South Aiken's Melissa Harris who fired on goal from 25 yards. Her shot was saved by Blair Worthington despite looking directly into the sun. Still 1:0 Riverside in a fine matchup between the top two ranked teams in AAA.

A real flurry of action to start the AAAA Girls' State Championship! In the first two minutes, Wando garnered three corner kicks. On the first, though, a brilliant serve is followed up by a header destined for the top half of the goal mouth. However Mauldin's goalkeeper Morgan Hert is up to the task and leaps upwards to punch it over the crossbar and deny a beautiful goal. In the eighth minute it is Mauldin 0:0 Wando.

Second half action is now underway at the Memorial Grounds ... the first half was full of it -- that's for sure! Two cautions to Mauldin's Kristie Hirt (32') and Sarah Shaidle (34') ... one on what looked to be a foul at the top of the area on the last field player on a potential goal scoring opportunity. The red card remained in the official's pocket, though. Three shots to two in favor of Wando, and the Mavericks have been whistled for 11 fouls to 4 for the Warriors.

GOALS! Mauldin 1:1 Wando

To quote the incomparable Jack Buck, "Unbelievable! I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!" Penalty given on 45' to Wando, which was firmly placed to the left of Mauldin goalkeeper Morgan Hert by Madeline Fellabom! While I was announcing the goal (within 12 seconds after the restart), a Mauldin through ball found its way into the area and was beautifully fired into the Warriors' netting by Lauren Young to equalize. A great match and two outstanding teams battling in a thriller here at Memorial.

GOAL! Mauldin 2:1 Wando

The Mavericks are absolutely on fire and it's as if the pitch is on a 5% downwards grade towards the north end of Memorial Stadium! On 52', Sarah Schaidle takes a beautiful cross from Lauren Young and fires it past Warrior goalkeeper Amelia Henderson for a one goal advantage to Mauldin. 24 to play as we speak (type) in an energetic AAAA championship match.
