Looks like 2010 will be Fort Mill's last shot at that elusive 4A State Championship. It's also Clover's last shot to end the Lady Jackets' 63-game region winning streak and six consecutive Region 3 4A titles.

Word on the street has Fort Mill dropping to 3A effective with the 2010-2011 season.

Projected:

Fort Mill
Nation Ford
York
Chester
Lugoff-Elgin
Fairfield Central

None of this is official.

You will be welcome! 3A was a pretty hot little league this year!

While it is nice to feel welcome. I am not sure how long the welcome committe will be out once these former AAAA powerhouses drop down. FMHS( and NFHS for that matter) may no longer be AAAA because of enrollment but they still have quite stong club bases from which they can pull their teams.
Given they way the FMHS JV girls ran roughshod 21-1 with 20 shutouts over their competition with only 1 junior on team, meaning almost the entire team will be there for 1st year of AAA, it should result in some really good soccer being played in this new "region". Hopefully they can add to the already "hot" 3A play.

I would think that Clover will still be on the top of FMHS/NFHS non region teams we need to play to guage ourselves!

But all that can wait as I think the girls(and boys) from FMHS have one more year to reach their goal in AAAA!

Chief,

We aren't "dropping down" to 3A, more like, moving across.

Riverside, Eastside, South Aiken, JL Mann, Hilton Head, etc. are as good as any teams in 4A.

Should be interesting.

I haven't seen any numbers published. Everything I have reported is unofficial. It's just what I have heard from other coaches who probably have more information than I have.

I don't think LE will be staying 3A, everything I have heard from AD's has them moving to 4A.. Of course who knows what will happen in the end...Funky things always seem to happen.

Meant "drop down" simply in the aspect of AAAA to AAA is droping an A of the title. I am sure some teams will be "moving up" too. As for the level of play I would say that yes there are many solid AAA teams and a couple of them gave AAAA teams some loses this year, but I think it is likely that overall it would be fair to say that teams coming from being contenders in AAAA to AAA will likely be right at the top of the heap. They will have to earn top spot but they should be in contention right off the bat.

Never realized Wando had 2,000 more kids than Fort Mill.

Wow FT Mill is somthing like 58th from the top in size and ended up ranked #3 in boys and girls soccer! Maybe the coaches of the year are the ones getting the most out of the least? FM only 3/4 the size of NWHS and barely 65% the size of Mauldin, the winners of the state titles, maybe a little love should go to coach Chalker & Johnson for their finish!

I wholeheartedly agree with that. Doing more with less should always be rewarded.

I guess Swansea will say Hello 2A! (Maybe) or Hello Bishop England! Crud
Interesting thing here is Wando's girls' enrollment is bigger than the entire school of the lower 24 of the top 48 in 4A. Can anyone say "there is power in numbers?" Makes their girls' enrollment 2 and 1/4 the size of our entire school. WOW!

Maybe we can combine forces and take down the Bishops. We could become the Barnwell-Swansea Comprehesive High School Soccer Team. If they do add us, I sense an extra game before play-offs.

Well since you like my stats try these out.

Since you are 34th on the list I would guess that unless they find a way to dodge a move up to the big time Riversides will be movin on up to AAAA (we are only 59th on the list). In fact you can look for South Aiken (47) & JL Mann (48) to be joining you up there. So unless a few schools dodge the numbers, AAAA is the top 48ish schools right, you will have to face a whole lot more of the big schools to get back to that title year after next!

Try this too since 2 of your 3 losses and 1 tie came against AAAA teams (the other came against a team that should be AAAA with you) it seems to me you are the one who should not hurtin yourself with the back pattin for the championship you just won, since you will need the energy to be ready for the step up to the big time! Oh and incase you were wondering the only AAA we played this year was a team that made the playoffs and we beat them.
Some how I think our move will go a little easier for us.
Oh and since most of the FMHS girl who will be facing AAA are the ones who won the IRMO JV preseason and went 21-1 with 20 shutouts against AAAA JV's I think we can feel pretty good about the move. How did the riverside JV do in the tournament? against AAAA JV's?

Funny thing is I just looked at the 2007 135day numbers and not everyone in the top 48 made it into AAAA? I guess some teams are able to dodge playing in a "tougher" bracket. Although I am sure someone will have a perfectly good reason why, it still looks cheesey to be in top 48 by numbers and playing against next 49-96 for a championship

Schools can petition to stay up or down if they are close enough in numbers. This has been going on for a looooooong time. Usually the reason given is travel expenses. If school A wants to stay down and school B wants to move up - with both numbers being close to the cut off - they frequently let it slide.

Personally, I don't think it's fair to the other schools.

you do have some good numbers and your teams do look ready for years to come.I really dont know how the districts are chosen and maybe some of it is unfair. If you want to sit back and criticize riverside thats your opinion. They had a fine season and they didnt pick the schedule. But if you can arrange it ,maybe we could meet at the viking cup.We arent dodging anyone.

Well I quess I did but the intent was based on the fact that the JV's for these schools will likely be the one playing in 2 years when the division shift occurs. FMHS actually had a large group of soph/fresh starters on varsity so they will get to see it but I was aluding to the fact that this years Juniors will not be a factor in the AAA move. Well, except maybe that with work they can provide a AAAA title next year, and give the girls going to AAA a goal to match!

I never critized the Riverside team I simply pointed out facts, backed up by Coach Young. I do not know if River side asked to stay at AAA even thought they had the numbers to go AAAA or if they pushed to move up but were denied. I also do not blame you for your schedule, you did play many AAAA team this year and as I pointed out you struggled against the stronger teams (to be fair you beat a copule of decent AAAA teams as well).
I know teams have to play with the schedule dealt and the division they are in is not thier fault, but they are by numbers now the 36th largest HS and smack in the middle of where AAAA should be and yet they are playing in AAA, I know not their fault, just a fact. Your team can be proud of what they accomplished AAA has several good teams. Just remember you called me out about crowing about being a small school (59 is 1/4 into AAA turf) that got within about 15min holding a 1-0 lead of playing in state championship for AAAA

As for meeting you could always come play in the BB&T that gets held in Rock Hill at manchester meadows, one of the best sites in the state (likely one of the best in the south east). Or I would guess most of our JV will be back next year in Irmo since we only had 1 senior this year, so you could send them down to size up the next few years of teams.

I think Fort Mill vs Riverside for an upper state championship would be pretty sweet. From experience, the best part of moving down or up is meeting the new coaches and visiting high schools you've never been to. Lots of fun and excitement in meeting new people and places

I think I read where Nation Ford had a graduating class of 261 this year and Fort Mill was a tad over 300. Can't believe either are 4A. My graduating class in HS was over 800!!!

Well given the shift from AAAA to AAA Fort Mill will be a target for every AAA they face anyway. Everyone will want to "measure" themselfs against a former AAAA team. Playing with target on your chest can give you an edge too! (oh do not think Nation Ford will not have tat same target too!)

I know what NFHS has coming up through the ranks too! They will also be a contender in the coming years. The club girls in the pipeline for them have all played with the FMHS girls for years and the group coming up over the next few years reflect the increasing impact of good club play in the area!

No doubt, the chance to play in new places will be a great adventure for the girls! As for playing Riverside in the up state Well if the numbers hold it does not seem likely, but you never know. Right now I think the girls want another shot at Mauldin becasue to e the best you have to beat the best, and this year it was Mauldin and until someone knocks them off they will be "the champs" and everyone wants to beat the champ.

Chief,

We aren't "dropping down" to 3A, more like, moving across.

Riverside, Eastside, South Aiken, JL Mann, Hilton Head, etc. are as good as any teams in 4A.

Should be interesting.

Riverside is a 4A team. They just happen to play 3A. They have a bigger student body than half the 4A team. How they stay 3A I don't know.

On the 2007 135-day enrollment list, Riverside was #47 which is in the top 48 and would normally be AAAA. But for some reason, it appears #58 Nation Ford was put in AAAA for 2008-2010 instead of Riverside. Anyone know why?

The two schools petitioned and we're granted. Travel were the stated reasons. At #47, that would not make them "...have a bigger student body than half the 4A team". Only one 4A team would they be larger than in that case.

Travel? That trip from Riverside to Mauldin, or Riverside to Hillcrest, must be a killer!

Check out a map and look at the trek from York to Lugoff-Elgin.

"Hey Dale......uh, you can't get there from here."

I'm still trying to get over a 2A school that's bigger than a 4A school. That's a bit...unusual.

I will agree the numbers do not even come close to placing Riverside in the upper half then or now! They are how ever part of the middle 50% (12-36) of AAAA populalation now. Anyone who really gets into this can put the numbers into excell and come up with about a dozen statistical breakdowns, but the plain and simple fact is that there are a lot of schools playing against schools much larger/smaller than themselves and the fairness of that is questionable.
The Nation Ford thing is simply a matter of the district wanting to kepp both of its high schools in the same division. The funny thing is that the 2007 number had no seniors at NFHS (becasue it was 1st year of school and no seniors were there as they were allowed to graduate from FMHS), and FMHS numbers included juniors who would not be there as seniors! So in effect Fort Mill school district placed both of its high schools in AAAA when they were both actually only AAA schools. I am sure someone would say well they wanted to save travel money or well the growth should have gotten them back to AAAA level but the economic down turn slowed that. Well they only made it to 59th with FMHS and I doubt 48th was even achievable so this was a case of the board blowing it and making it unfair to its players.

In the Riverside case they did just the opposite to them, from 47th to 34th well it seems really clear someone was sandbagging, but hey the board was using the system to give its players an advantage, some might say a rather unfair one, but within the rules. The question is really one of why they really requested to stay down in the smaller divison if the AD says to save travel well then I guess there are not enough AAAA schools in their area.

Right we all believe that one!
(and do not think I am bashing the Riverside players they earned the wins, after all NHWS beat Irmo a much larger school who beat Wando an even larger school. The difference was they were playing in the division they belonged in and won it all)

Well, the classifications were based on projections...Ashley Ridge and Cane Bay are brand-new schools in Dorchester and Berkeley Counties, respectively. They started as 9th and 10th grade only, but apparently the numbers are way up already, but they are placed in 2A for a two-year cycle in spite of having more students than a number of 4A schools.

Wish they had been placed in 4A from the start with regions 7 and 8 AAAA...it would have solved this idiotic mess the HSL has made of playoff spots between those two regions--but then they wouldn't have been able to send 5 teams to the playoffs from their 8-team region.

Did I say idiotic mess?

Just checking. Thought I might have left that out inadvertently.

Hey I was just wanting to get the question out there as to why 4A schools could play in a 3A region. OK they were not in the top half but they are definitly in the 4A classification. And Travel, come on give me a break. Mauldin, Spartanburg, Dorman, Byrns, TL Hanna, Wren, Westside, Hillcrest. A lot of schools within 30 minutes. Don't get me wrong Riverside is very good and would compete for the state title in 4A as well.

It seems to me that it should be pretty much black and white when it comes to numbers.

I am not sure i would say they would compete for the AAAA title look at thier record against AAAA playoff teams this year. They did not perform at a level that would make me think they are able to win at the next level. Sorry not opinion just looking at record.

To be fair the numbers are from 2007 when they set the brackets. Now like I said before we can question motivation as to why a growing school chose to ask to stay down but they were not 34th then they were only 47th (although had FT Mill reported its projected true numbers then maybe Riverside is 46th).

Black and white with numbers.... HAHAHAHA, never someone is always looking for an edge and other schools are looking to truely save money by getting in a bracket with lesser travel, remember this is for all sports! All we can do is wonder if after two years they can get it right or if we have to wiat another two years and see how off they were this time.

Riverside has one more year in 3A and will move up to 4A in the 2010-2011 school year I would assume this is when Ft Mill is moving down?

Never saw them, and never critized them either! I would guess to win AAA they are likely a very good team. The only negitiv e thing I think you c ould say I said was that they struggled against quality AAAA teams and I based that on the record not opinion.
If you feel I have bashed them please show me where. I have only stated fact and what I would say are reasonable interpetation of the records. I have been critical of the decision that left them at AAA but have not blamed the team for that! In fact I blame FM school district more for letting a non AAAA size school play up than riverside for playing down.
IF you do not like the fact I have pointed out I am sorry but they are facts and the numbers are what they are. If you want credit for being a top level program against AAAA teams you have to beat top AAAA teams. When you play AAA schools and you are AAAA size no one will cut you slack when you start talking about other teams, and remember you brought it up first!

Transplant, I take exception to that comment. I have never bashed anybody on this site. I simply asked a question and even stated I thought Riverside could compete for the 4A title. You owe me an apology.

Does not look like you will get one! Seems to be a little sensitive so likely you offended him/her with your demand for an appology too

If you won a title and then had people tell you well of course you won becase you played a bunch of small schools and you should be playing with the big schools, well you might get a little hyper-sensitive too. Not sayin thats what we said but if you were "sensitive" about it you might be able to read the thread that way.

Might be some form of a Napolean complex in reverse? Might have to get a psycho-analyst to look into it.

Apologize? For you diminishing the fact that they had a great season and won the state title? The girls don't pick the teams they play or whether or not they are in 3A or 4A and I am not sure that just because you are classified 4A the soccer players are better. All the girls can do is show up for the game and play. It would be better if all the regions were structured so even the smaller teams had a chance to win a title. Maybe you didn't check their record when you said they couldn't play the big schools. Riverside won against Spartanburg, Wren, Byrnes, and T.L. Hannah. Yes we did lose to Mauldin in the last couple minutes, lost to Dorman on pks, and to Dutch Fork when they were on a 17 game winning streak, and these were all great teams. I am not sensitive...just proud of the girls great season, having a team of mostly sophmores and freshman, and don't feel that the reason they won was because they played the "weaker" teams because that is certainly not the case with any of those teams having watched some of them play 4A schools as well.

Might need to have a psycho-analyst look into why you are on the soccer forum at 2:20 in the morning??

No one diminnished the teams accomplishment, we have all said they played the games dealt them and thats all they can do.
What has been said is that they won big in AAA and did not do so well against AAAA. Look you took credit for wins and a loss, in scrimmages I would never judge a teams quality of play on that basis, and did not use them when I pointed out how they struggled against AAAA teams. You point out a 3-2 win over Byrnes a 6-11-1 team, and TL Hana was a good team this year but look at their end of year performance they fell out near the end (to which Riverside can claim some credit for getting the fall started).
So yes I did check the record and stand by my assesment, Riverside struggled against quality AAAA teams 2 losses and a tie in regular season against 1 win vs AAAA teams. The numbers are what they are.

As for the psycho-analyst thing just having some fun. Me well 2:20 in am is just another work day for me sometimes.

As was Fort Mill, 1 senior (non-starter)on the whole team. In fact they had more lower grade players (9th/10th) picked for all region than 11th graders! I would expect some great seasons from them over the next several years.

Chief, pretty certain the coach picks all region. Maybe nominates....is a better choice of words. But FM gets X spots, then the FM coach nominates the players he wants to nominate.

I doubt any of the other coaches overrule a coaches nomination.

Right, so Coach Johnson felt he had three underclasswomen who were better (worth recognition) and only two juniors. Maybe he was spreading the recognition around?? I would guess he was recognizing his key players on the team.

Chief,

I think your logic is really skewed. I dislike Riverside like any Chapin person should but they are a really good team. Your correct in that they did not have a winning record against 4a teams but other than the Dutch Fork lose, the rest where very very close loses and all the loses where very early in the season when you could have injuries or players coming off basketball that screws with your team. Riverside will do just fine in 4A and will be playing for a title the first year in 4A.

Also be careful of comparing JV teams to each other and to the future. There are a lot of club players that never play a game in JV, so you think a HS team will struggle because of their JV team and then the club players show up for varsity and change everything. Chapin almost always has a dominate JV team year in, year out but they has not always translated into a dominate varsity team. It is nice to have and see but it just does not always translate as a one to one relationship in Girls Soccer especially.

Here I go again!
