Charleston Sweeps 2009 WVIAC Men's Soccer Top Honors
11/13/2009

(PRINCETON, W.Va.) --- WVIAC regular season and tournament champion Charleston makes a complete sweep of the top 2009 league men's soccer awards. Sophomore forward Dion Peters is the WVIAC Player of the Year, while teammate Rob Vincent is the WVIAC Freshman of the Year. Second-year UC head coach Chad Duernberger was honored by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year.

Peters, a sophomore from Trinidad City, Trinidad & Tobago, leads the WVIAC with 34 points. His 15 goals also top the conference. Vincent, a Liverpool, England midfielder, chipped in eight goals and an assist for the #14 Golden Eagles. He also was a key contributor as UC only allowed 10 goals in 20 contests to date.

Duernberger, a three-time All-WVIAC first team selection as a player at Charleston, has engineered a remarkable turnaround at his alma mater. After inheriting a program that suffered through a winless 2007 season and was in the midst of a 26-match losing skid, the Belle, WV native led his team to a 4-11-2 mark in 2008. The Golden Eagles smashed all expectations in 2009 with a 17-3 mark heading into the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The second-year coach owns a 21-14-2 record as a head coach.

Charleston also dominated the first team All-WVIAC squad with seven selections. Regular season and tournament runner-up Davis & Elkins had four honorees on the 16 member team.

West Virginia Wesleyan senior defender Abe Levin-Nielsen, a Vienna, WV native, along with Davis & Elkins' Daniel Kwafo are three-time first team picks. Peters, Kwafo, Brett Fackenthal (WVWC), and T.J. O'Brien (WJU) are also repeat honorees from the 2008 first team all-league squad.
