There is no easy group, but Group A looks pretty stout. 2009 4A and 3A State runners up, Wando and South Aiken and JL Mann and Spartanburg.

I agree with Mavs Dad, Bracket A has the heavyweights.
JL Mann vs South Aiken is probably the best first round match.
Clover vs TL Hanna rematch of last season's second round state play off game should be a classic as well.

Who wouldn't want to be in bracket D?
That is the group that doesn't have one last year's state championship or runner up teams in their bracket...Mauldin, Wando, Riverside, South Aiken, Bishop England or Christ Church.
Group of death...A. Closely followed by C!

Really D? You would want to have to play Dorman, Fort Mill, and Irmo (done by preseason rank 3,4,5 in 4A) over the "B" bracket? I will credit Riverside in "B" (even though they did struggle against top 4A teamlast year) but not sure a "AA/A" runner up is a more dangerous foe than any of these 3!
Not trying to start a bigger is better fight just looking at who beat who last year.

I'll make the call, Wando. Very good keeper with a good supporting cast. I Agree with B, C, and D. Riverside, well it's Riverside, Mauldin, lots of depth, and Dorman has an excellent HS coach.

Dutch Fork is extremely young. If they win three games in that group then Jovan is the early candidate for COY.

Irmo seems to have a good start on the season..I have heard only one true goal given up and 14 goals for.Sounds like a good solid defense and offense.Still a pretty young team there too.

Looking forward to the tournament, looking forward to seeing tonight's results. Weather should be perfect.
TBVC is the premier tournament for high school girls soccer in South Carolina, it might be the best in the nation. My only beef is that I wish we had three officials for all of these great matches.
Good luck to all the teams!

Main field looked good, a couple of sanded areas, but we did not play on it-- the back field had a couple of beaches to play through, but was otherwise hard, dry, and fast but a bit bumpy as well.
Field at Blythewood is in pretty good shape-- a bit soft and worn in the goal area but in pretty good shape for the time of year- weather- and 8 teams using it.

SV2, as it's called, is in AWFUL shape. I've seen middle school fields in better shape than that. I wonder what SV3 is like. I saw SV boys practicing on it when I got to the tournament. Hope it's in better shape. Got to give it to tournament directors though, no matter how SV team does, win or lose they don't have to play on SV2.

I have to say that goes as a 'perk' of doing all the work in hosting the tourney. I'm sure the 'tournament directors' were the ones lining the fields, taking days off to make sure the tournament is run properly, etc.
I too, saw SV2 and it's in not-so-good shape, but be thankful that Steve Lea and company work so hard to pull off this mammoth event. Kudos to SVHS!
The soccer folks cannot help that football, lacrosse, rugby, also have use of those fields! I look forward to another couple of great days at the Viking Cup!

There is a lot of soccer to be played this weekend UncleBuck. I remember a few years back this big bad football team from The Big Ten, thought they had the national championship won and all they had to do was show up and collect the trophy. Turns out a little SEC team from Florida had something else on their mind. Thought you learned your lesson? Mauldin plans on going down trying as hard as they can and not taking anything for granted.

I don't know, maybe Mauldin is six goals better than Byrnes but do you think BE just might be a little nervous after the number that Whackamole put up tonight?

Tonights Official Scores Wando x Spartaburg 3-0 South Aiken x JL Mann 4-0 Waccamaw x Byrnes 6-0 Riverside x James Island 1-1 PK - Riverside advances TL Hanna x Clover 0-0 PK - TL Hanna advances Eastside x Myrtle Beach 4-0 Mauldin x Bishop-England 2-0 Fort Mill x Summerville 1-0 Irmo x West Florence 3-1 Woodruff x West Ashley 1-1 PK - Woodruff advances
** my two cents .. Byrnes did not play well or show up tonight, the Mauldin x Bishop-England was tight for 50 minutes, both teams controlled the ball and played 50-50 until Mauldin's first goal. Could have been the cup championship game, had they not been in same bracket.

We had ANOTHER tough one with Clover. I have to tip my hat to Steve Lea and the SV crew for making the best of SV2. That poor field bears the doughnut markings of Lacrosse and lots of sand. It was tough to play on but we got through it.
I feel bad for Clover. They played very well and everybody knows that PKs can be more luck than skill.

So what were the big surprises for round 1?
JL Mann getting dominated by S Aiken? (someone called that a possible good 1st round match-up)
Wacamole making a big statement about hanging with the big dogs!
Riverside barely making it by an unranked team coming off a 4-11 season?
TL Hanna and Clover are still only PK's apart!
Mauldin being pushed to the end by B.E.?
Woodruff knocking off West Ashley?
Looks like the little gals have come to make a statement, and that the favored powerhouses have their work cutout for them! Should be a great day for round 2.
Anyone who saw R1 want to handicap R2?

The Chief: My take on day two (Friday).
It's not about the size of the school, it's about the quality and coaching of the players.
JL Mann has nobody to replace Mattern and now Rae Wilson.
Mauldin 2-0, nice result playing with a big target on your back.
Riverside came out a bit slow, but will pick up where they left off last year.

While I have a moment, here is a quick post of this morning...
We won 1-0 (Roberts, assist- Wilson)
Riverside won 1-0 but I do not know who scored. We go on against each other at 12:30.
Mauldin was up 1-0 and SA/ Spring Valley were 0-0 in the second half when I left the fields.
I gotta run now...Dorman/Irmo and Fort Mill/ West Ashley (yes West Ashley beat Woodruff) are about to start.
I love this tournament!!! So much to see if you are a fan of Girl's soccer.

We had a fantastic game with Riverside. Very fast paced and high quality. Morgan Cutts scored on a beauuuuutiful turn and run with the ball. Defense played great other than waaaaay too many corners for this old coach's heart. We move on to meet the winner of SA and Wando. When we left the field Wando was up 2-0. The first goal was bizarre. I didn't see it but those that saw it say the Wando player handed the ball for possession then kicked it in. Anybody that saw it please feel free to comment. Again, I did not see the play but the SA girls were furiously arguing with the refs.

Beautiful day at SVHS. Strange calls in BC/BE game!!! Not sure why a goal was called back as I saw it hit the net??? Bad sportsmanship from the BE team, lots of arguing with ref and bad language. Surprised Mauldin only beat RV 1-0 too. Oh well, back to the fields after a quick lunch -- no more Taco Bell for me

Agree, pre-season rankings seem usually based on previous year and great final four. But, except for the low #9 pre-season ranking for TL Hanna seven of the eight bracket finalists included the pre-season #1-#4 4A and #1-#3 3A teams. It seems this year the VC did more confirming of the rankings than sorting.

That's true. Great tournament. SV does a nice job. There a little land locked on 2 of the fields. Maybe they could use the Polo fields that are close by. They have lights.

What do the out-of-town teams do that advance to the semifinals? Do you pay for your hotel rooms up front/in advance anticipating the semifinals or do you pony up that day? Do parents pick up the tab?
I'm sure the hotels are enjoying the Viking Cup finals and the "visitors" hanging around another night!

Mavs Soccer Dad, I hope you see Wando in May also. Between now and then get the Mavs girls some warmup uniforms. Whats up with the sweat pants and hoodies. You have more money than anyone I know. Who's your sponsor? "Dollar General".

unclebuck, believe it or not, those sweatpants are all the rage. My girls wanted them too and I ignored them...then when they saw Mauldin in them, I really heard about it!!! Quote:

Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.
