As we anticipate the 2010 Palmetto Cup (April 4-7) at Brookland-Cayce High School, we are also planning for the 2011 event, which will be held April 18-21 (Monday-Thursday) in Cayce, South Carolina. Easter Sunday is April 24.

If your boys varsity squad is interested in participating in the 2011 Palmetto Cup, please send an e-mail to B-C Boys Soccer Coach Kevin Heise at kheise@lex2.org.

Please check to see if your school is on Spring Break that week as that is instrumental for our scheduling efforts.

The 2011 Palmetto Cup will feature a Monday-Thursday format (April 18-21) instead of the traditional Wednesday-Saturday scenario, since Easter Sunday falls on April 24. Please contact Brookland-Cayce High School boys soccer coach Kevin Heise (kheise@sc.rr.com) if your team is interested in competing in "The Southeast's Premier High School Boys Soccer Tournament".

The 2011 Palmetto Cup would like to welcome Clover to the tournament field. This will be the Blue Eagles second visit to the Palmetto Cup as Clover finished the 2003 tourney with a 1-2-1 record.

You should invite Airport

Airport has always had a standing invitation as a Lexington Two school, however AHS has chosen to host their own tourney the past couple of years after participating in the Palmetto Cup from 2006-2008.

A complete history of the teams that have participated in the Palmetto Cup may be found at this link.

Farragut-TN, an annual participant since 2006, has had to withdraw from the 2011 Palmetto Cup due to "district travel restrictions". We hope that the Admirals will be able to rejoin the Palmetto Cup field in the near future.

However, the 2011 Palmetto Cup welcomes its first international participant in this Spring's tournament as St. Joseph's of Ontario, Canada has taken the place of Farragut in this tourney. We welcome the Rams to the Palmetto State this Spring!

St. Joseph's of Ontario, Canada, has had to withdraw from the 2011 Palmetto Cup due to: "we live in a community whose income relies heavily on the manufacturing sector and unfortunately with the recent slow downs, a percentage of our parents could not see their way clear to financially support this trip ..."

So, Group B is seeking one team to square off with the likes of Fort Mill (3A), Lexington (4A), and Riverside (4A). The schedule is listed above. Please send an e-mail to Kyle Heise if your boys varsity squad is interested. Thanks!

The 2011 Palmetto Cup is seeking a 12th team to round out the tournament field. We have a system for an 11-team tourney if necessary, but would prefer to keep the 12-team format if at all possible.

Thanks to Coach Jason Mueller and North Myrtle Beach for committing to the 2011 Palmetto Cup. The Chiefs participated in the Palmetto Cup in 2008 and 2009 and own a 3-3-2 record at the spring tourney. This rounds out the 12-team tournament scheduled for The Cage at Brookland-Cayce HS, April 18-21.

Can anyone help ESPN Soccernet Broadcast with these questions? I think it would be great to have his crew down in Columbia!!!

Is there WI-FI in the Palmetto Cup press box?

Do I need to talk to the AD of BC to get admission through the gate with my crew?

Can I bring a cooler?

Who's going to pick me up from the airport? I only fly Virgin Mobile and British Airways...you can forget about Southwest Airlines. I enjoy life.

Is there a good local pub around so I can watch some real football from across the pond? We have Champions League and Prem going on!

I'm hesitant to say that it's a done deal but, I have put in a request with the boss to be in attendance of this prestigious event. My only hope is that the pollen problem in your native land will clear up by then. I have a real distaste for that sort of thing. I suspect my countrymen have as well since 1781.

I must say I do take a certain amount of schoolboy joyousness in watching the American game. It's the same feeling I get when I see The Real Housewives of Yorkshire on the tele; a guilty pleasure. We only catch 15 second snipits of your MLS on the 2AM American sports show. I'm getting worked up thinking about loose clothing, bad verbal skills, and pick up trucks just thinking about it!

Is there WI-FI in the Palmetto Cup press box? No. We formally requested this to be put in by the district in February, but still to no avail. We are efforting to establish a wi-fi hot spot via other means however.

Do I need to talk to the AD of BC to get admission through the gate with my crew? No, just email me at kheise@lex2.org with your name and that of your crew.

Can I bring a cooler? No outside food or drinks are allowed inside The Cage.

Who's going to pick me up from the airport? I only fly Virgin Mobile and British Airways...you can forget about Southwest Airlines. I enjoy life. Well, the Columbia Metro Airport and local municipalities dropped the ball on Southwest and the others don't offer local service. I might recommend Delta.

Is there a good local pub around so I can watch some real football from across the pond? We have Champions League and Prem going on! Of course, the Cock N Bull pub is excellent and is just a five minute drive from BCHS.

Did Pinewood's embarrassing loss to Hilton Head have anything to do with the withdrawal?

I think we do a disservice about talking about a team that has withdrawn There are outstanding teams in the Palmetto Cup. I think Wando has a great opportunity to win it all.

Why do you have to say it was a embarrassing loss to Hilton Head they just played a great game and defensively shut pinewood down and no it has nothing to do with the fair loss to hilton head.

Looks like Greenville vs BC will decide who wins that easy Bracket. Group A is def the group of death in this tourney tough to choose who wins that one but I think NN will pull it out. Group B I will go with North Myrtle in 1st with Lexington in 2nd. I think NN will win the tourney, but im hoping an in state team will keep the trophy!!!

Group A is loaded and should be a great game between Norman and Wando. Group B should favor Lexington and they made their statement in the Riverside game. Not much hope with Fort Mill missing 3 senior starters for the tournament. Group C should be wide open affair.

Kyle (and Kevin) not only do you all run a GREAT tournamnet. But for people like me that still not on Spring Break, your updates does make it feel like I am somewhat there. Just think I rememeber the old days of your weekly newsletters (I still have them somewhere) but you guy go above and beyond. I remember two years ago I was able to follow the clash from Hawaii, and I mad a call at half time
Again thanks for all you do

why is all of Pinewood's matches a forfeit?!!!!

RECEIVED AT 2:11 P.M., ON SATURDAY, APRIL 16:

Coach-

I wanted to inform you that we will not be attending the Palmetto Cup next week. Our varsity squad has been hit with several injuries this past week and has also encountered a few students with low grades. We are not on spring break next week. As you can imagine, the traveling back and forth is not only costly in terms of gasoline, but also it will create academic challenges for our students with below average grades-if they were to travel at all.

We are not a big squad to begin with and the injuries that we have encountered will only get worse with the 4-5 games that we would be playing. We respect the privilege to play in the Palmetto Cup and we have battled with how this would impact our reputation. Unfortunately, we are not in control of the injuries and I do hope you and your administration understand our decision.

I do hope that we will be invited back to the Palmetto Cup, but I do know that we will be unable to participate in the future unless it correlates with our spring break.

Coach Suarez will be trying to contact you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Kyle,
Quick question:
It appears that it may be possible for the best team of a bracket to have a point total that would not make the Semis?
Has this ever happened?

All three Group Winners advance to the Semifinals. The fourth spot will go to the team with the next highest point total.

Guys, if Cardinal Newman wins and the championship match is moved to 3:30 then wouldn't our game be at 5:30 instead of 5 due to the 40 minute halves?

Yes, on the 5:30 p.m., start time for the 5th Place match, but we left the "time slots" as they were printed. However, 5:30 would be more appropriate for a Championship match with regular SCHSL times (40' halves, 10' intermission', 10' OT, PKs, quick post-match ceremony, etc.).

Correct, 9th Place, 7th Place, and 5th Place matches will feature 30' halves. The Semifinals and Finals will be full SCHSL matches.

Is it just me, or did the 10 points for the forfeit kind of skew the semifinal games. I am quite sure that NN would have been a much better team to play in the semi than Clover. I'm sure it took a bit for NN to get used to playing on such a small field too...would guess that they are going to destroy the team they have to play next....

Those are the tournament rules. Wouldn't it be unfair to those that were scheduled to play Pinewood if they weren't given all the possible points ? Norman North got beat...if they had taken care of business then they would be in the running. They've been here before and have come back again and again, so the small field must not bother them too much.

Clover gave Lexington a good hard match in the semi this morning except for 10 minutes in the second half. That 10 minutes was the difference in the match. Show some respect soccerboy. The Lexington players did at the end of the match. As for the 10 points awarded for the Pinewood forfeit on day 1, whose to say Clover couldn't have earned those anyway. From what I saw Clover came to play.

And NN did exactly what I figured they would do against Riverside. I will not give any high respect for a Clover team that has 7 losses on the year, sorry. They may be able to hang with a good team for some time during a tournament, but the better skilled team took over and did the job. Clover is an Ok team this year, but they can't stand up against the top 4A teams in the state this year.

That being said, good luck to all the teams down the stretch, and may they play their best games in the post season. Should be a fun year to watch the playoffs.

Thanks Bazza! A lot of credit should be given to our boys/girls soccer coaching staffs, ball chasers, canteen volunteers, trainers, Larry Bunn (canteen director/ticket taker), the officials, and Dennis Cook for organizing the officials. Several of these folks take personal vacation days in order to facilitate this tournament. Without their unselfish assistance, this event would not be possible.

Also, special thanks to our sponsors which help make this event possible -- the City of Cayce, Fatz Cafe, He Takes Pictures, Lesesne Industries, Lloyd's Soccer, Moore Orthopaedics, Nike, Palmetto Lawns, and SCSoccer.com.

The 5-2 outcome is not what I would have expected. Looks like Lex exploited some weaknesses in CN's defense.

Good stuff Coach.
Quick question: What criteria was used to give 3rd place to BC and 4th to Clover?

Brookland-Cayce won Group C and was one of the top three seeds while Clover finished as Runners-Up in Group C and were the Wildcard for the Semifinals.

The All-Tournament Team list has been updated, but we have still not heard from Eastside or Norman North-OK with their selections.

Congratulations to the three Palmetto State teams that competed in the 2011 Palmetto Cup "Group of Death" that captured state titles the past week: Cardinal Newman (SCISA); Eastside (3A); and Wando (4A).

Palmetto Cup Results
Wando 4-0 Eastside
Cardinal Newman 2-1 Norman North-OK
Norman North-OK 4-1 Wando
Cardinal Newman 2-1 Eastside
Norman North-OK 3-0 Eastside
Cardinal Newman 3-2 Wando
Cardinal Newman 2-1 Brookland-Cayce
Eastside 3-0 (F) Pinewood Prep
Wando 5-1 North Myrtle Beach
