The 5th Annual BB&T Fort Mill Invitational high school girls soccer tournament will be held at Manchester Meadows, in Rock Hill, from March 18 through March 20, 2011.

This past spring we had 22 schools from four different states participate. If you are interested in playing next spring, please PM me ASAP to reserve your spot.

Thanks!

All games on the stadium turf fields.

Marvin Ridge is NC 3A defending state champ.
Hough is a first-year school split from defending 4A state champ North Meck.
Charlotte Catholic and AC Reynolds will go very deep in the NC 3A state playoffs.
Mooresville, Providence and Weddington are also very strong teams.
Stratford Academy will challenge for the Georgia Independent state championship.
First Presbyterian Day won the GISA state championship a couple of years ago and has now moved to GA 3A.

You are correct, WCCS is in Rock Hill.

However, Westminster Catawba is a member of North Carolina's Metrolina Athletic Conference and, for athletic purposes, is generally considered a NC school.

Once again the (Ft. Mill)Herald shows it's colors. Always about the Yeller' Jackets. Hello...People...Ft. Mill is not THE team to beat in this area (and no it's DEFINITELY not NW either), that would be Clover. Sorry Jacket fans the fact is that your 3A now and not even the best in that. Yes you can say that Clover only beat you in PK's but the reality of it is that if it wasn't for outstanding individual plays by a senior defender and your goalie(Sorry don't know their names but if I did they'd get their proper praises) it probably would have been more like 3-0. The other truth is that your supposed time of possession was greatly aided by the calling of the referees in the second half. Say what you want, I was there and know that FM got too many calls their way that either A) shouldn't have been called or B)allowed to keep Clover pinned in their half. I watched as FM D's were all over the back of Clover F and no call while in the 2nd half on a 50/50 at midfield...surprise.. foul Clover. If the Ft. Mill Herald wants to interview someone about their chances then maybe it should be the 2010 Conference Champions, CLOVER and interview FM about how to beat them (Clover) this weekend.

Your funny, of course it is all about FM, it is their tour event and they won it last year! If Clover wants the credit/writeup step up and host/win one.

As for the game and the calls, you could ask fans from either side and they will point out bad calls against their side. I saw the reffing all day and thought it was even for the most part, by that I mean just as bad and good both ways. I did think the refs let it get to rough but hey that's HS soccer not club, and I would say the Clover Fwd (#24 I think) gave along with what she got just fine without the calls going either way. It was just as bad on the other end where the FM fwds got hammered quite often too.
On the score I think both team play very hard and got solid goals, the FM score was a well earned one on one after a great pass where the fwd beat the keeper; period. The Clover goal was one of the better bent shots I have seen in a girls game she hooked it so hard, IMHO the FM keeper clearly could have blocked it out (she had her hands up then pulled them down), the keeper thought it was going away and then it sliced right inside of the far post. (at least at my angle thats how it looked)
You should also take some credit for your defender saving that header which beat your keeper (who was great by the way), if the def does not clear that at the last sec there would have been no PK's.
Clover won so they were the better team that day but hey we get another shot in a few weeks lets see how that goes before we crown someone champs of the area, it could be Clover, but I would not do it on the strength of a pk shoot out.
Good luck this weekend, who knows maybe that meeting can happen even sooner????????

Wow, even for the most part??? I don't think so......especially the jv games and the varsity girls (did not see the boys) Clover varsity got a yellow card on our defender #10 for her saying she didn't kick out the ball to the ref??? Oh and by the way if our forward #24 sneezed the wrong way she got the whistle blown on her.

As far as the write up goes, it is ALWAYS about Fort Mill. When Clover beat them last year, NOTHING in the paper. Again this year, when Clover won at Fort Mill for the 1st time in 8 years, nothing but the box score........

I will give you I was impressed with Fort Mill's defense, but I agree with Manu........there are other teams out there this year that are as just as good and better and hope the Herald recognizes that but I won't hold my breath.

Anybody & ManUfan,

Just to set the record straight, Fort Mill and Clover were Region 3 4A co-champions in 2010. Good luck this year as you strive for your first outright region championship. You have a good team, I'm sure you will do well, but Northwestern and Spartanburg will not be pushovers.

Best of luck this weekend, you have some very tough games on Friday and Saturday. Be sure to keep it all in perspective. The region title is most important.......and make sure you are firing on all cylinders come May.

Actually just to set the record straight for you Hurst, Clover was THE III/IV Champion. You can think what you want BUT the fact is the Clover won it outright on tiebreaker. Whether you chose to accept that or not is your choice but it is a matter of fact. If the roles were reversed I strongly believe you would be defending your position. Yes it was a close race but there was only one champ not two. That's why there are rules in place to settle who is the champ. I don't see anywhere in the SCHSL handbook about co-champs. In regards to NW and Sptnbrg I agree with you on the latter but not the former. IMHO NW is not on Clovers level. Last year @ NW they (NW/Cesar) put us on a what I'd generously call an 8v8 size field to negate our speed adv. and played...I'll kindly call, aggressive. Nothing has probably changed. What I'd like to know from what I hear is how can 2 girls, who are neighbors play on different teams? 1 on NW the other on RH..kinda makes you wonder.

Well like I said fans would see it different depending on where they sit. Questioning/aruging individual calls tends to lead no where. On the JV games, they were no where as close to being as competitive as the varsity games. The girls score may have been 1-0 but that was the only close thing about it. The Clover girls barely threatened the FM keeper, maybe twice or thrice in the entire game and even then the FM defenders were right there to clear it if necessary. The boys game was also a matter of one team controlling the game and the other responding to constant attacks. In both those games the reffing did not give an advantage to FM it was the level of play and control of the ball. Like I said though were you sat may have made it look different.

On the newspaper, as fas as I know we (FM) do not have a staff member on the editorial board. Maybe FM has more suscribers to the Herald so they figure they should make FM happy to keep circulation up!

On the D I am sure the girls would be happy to hear that especially the one who played center defender because the regular starting center was not available for the game. Clover's D was also excellent and as I said before the keeper had an exceptional game, very good grabs, including several booming punts you would not expect from a smaller keeper like her.

Good luck this weekend.

Gotta give you credit for coming out and saying what you think but droppng the inuendo at the end seems kind of cheapshotish. Say who and what you mean, like the rest of your post and it would seem more resonable.
I can repect the fact that you saw the games and results different and that you pull for your team but when you move to calling kids cheaters (plainly thats what you implied) I think it unfair to just lob the accusation without being clear, else you taint them all and that does not seem fair either.

On the region winner thing as far as I saw in the rules book there is only tie breakers for seeding into state playoffs, nothing about region champs tie breakers. Can you please reference where you found the rule for tie breakers in region champs. I am not saying you got it wrong just wondering where you got the decision from. From what I read in SCHSL rules Hurst seems to be right on the co-champ thing but I would be open to reading your reference.

Chief,
Sorry to not make myself clear enough. I in no way am implying the NW players are cheaters. They are not. What I am saying is that I BELIEVE there are things that were done last year and some possibly questionable rostering issues this year (can't find an actual map of the school district borders) this year that in no way are a result of the players but does cast into question the integrity of the coaching staff/program. Let be make this perfectly clear, I think Cesar is a committed and dedicated coach, I just feel that playing on a small field like that makes it look like someone is trying to get an advantage that they normally would not have if played on a regulation field. The coaches at NW are not new to the game and knowing this should have found an alternate location like Memorial stadium. As far as cheap shots, players will play as they are taught and if the coaches don't correct bad play then it sends a signal that it's accepted and therefore encouraged. All things like this do is make a program look bad.

Regarding the other games you are exactly right in that they were one sided. No question about it. Clover was outmanned and outgunned. My only slight difference of opinion is that the girls were not playing as aggressive as they should (and up until then did) in the game. You can't wait for the ball to come to you when your playing against a team that knows what it takes to win and a coaching staff that teaches it to those players who don't. Regardless of that (in my opinion) Clovers' JV teams and V boys hopefully will improve and the coaches take away some valuable lessons from this past weekend.

I take it that Clover and Ft. Mill have a bit of a rivalry going on? Hopefully it can continue(or put more fuel to the fire depending on the outcome or who you ask)at the tourney.
One thing I have noticed while perusing the various threads from around here is that(it seems)Clover doesn't get mentioned much. I see thing about FM, NW, NF and so on but the defending conference champ(according to state cup seeding) gets no respect. You do these girls a disservice by your lack of acknowledgment at their accomplishments(elite 8)which was farther than any other team from around here went including the so-called co-champ. ManUfan....I'll assume your basing your statement of conf. champ as I do based on seeding. Lets be honest there Hurst it's 1,2,3.... not 1,1A,2...

Yes they have the rivalry of having in many cases grownup playing with and against each other in school and club! Up until FM split its high schools a few years ago it was mostly one sided in FMs favor, I think something like 7 or 8 years running win streak for the girls. I too hope it will continue as I think they are both the best year in and year out (at this point, but NHS seems to be making a push now)that each others sees in this area. Those who watched closely saw several players hugging both before and after the game. It may be a war every time they play but it is mostly from respect and the desire to beat your friends!

Weather report for the games this weekend looks great! The FM Charlotte Cath. game tonight will be a real test for FM and should be a great game under the lights at a great complex! If you stay after the Clover game, which will also be good I would recommend the Marvin Ridge game as the inbetween game to watch, but then at that complex you can get high in the stands and watch both games at once! May cause neck strain but is fun!

According to NFHS rules, the minimum field size for high school soccer is 55 by 100 yards. As long as the field is at least 55 yards wide and 100 yards long, it is legal. Since many SC high schools play on fields designed for gridiron football with paved tracks around them, they are often restricted to little more than the minimum.

Seeding a tourney is not the same as winning a conference, do a little web searching and you will find numerous "co-conference" champions. It is the given title used in many sports when teams tie and there is no conference championship game. In fact you would find that the SEC uses divisional co champions when teams have the same record, then they use a tie breakers for seeding. Oh and this last season Ohio State and Penn State were .... wait for it ...... Big Ten Co-Champions!!

"After finishing the conference season with 8-2-0 records, Ohio State and Penn State shared the 2010 Big Ten Championship, marking the Buckeyes' first and the Nittany Lions' 13th-straight."

Last year Blythewood and Spring Valley were named co-champions of Region IV-AAAA and Spring Valley advanced to the playoffs as the #1 seed through the tie-breaker system while Blythewood went as the number #2 seed. Blythewood was still recognized as Region IV-AAAA Co-Champions. I would think it was the same way last year for Fort Mill and Clover.

Last year @ NW they (NW/Cesar) put us on a what I'd generously call an 8v8 size field to negate our speed adv. and played ... I just feel that playing on a small field like that makes it look like someone is trying to get an advantage that they normally would not have if played on a regulation field. The coaches at NW are not new to the game and knowing this should have found an alternate location like Memorial stadium.

ManUFan: I thought NW played on a big 80x120 field? Where did y'all play?

Northwestern has cemented World Cup style goal posts measured at 120yds long.

Thats a big 8vs8 field

Actually just to set the record straight for you Hurst, Clover was THE III/IV Champion. You can think what you want BUT the fact is the Clover won it outright on tiebreaker. Whether you chose to accept that or not is your choice but it is a matter of fact. If the roles were reversed I strongly believe you would be defending your position. Yes it was a close race but there was only one champ not two. That's why there are rules in place to settle who is the champ. I don't see anywhere in the SCHSL handbook about co-champs...

It would not be in the SCHSL handbook. Each region sets their own guidelines on how to handle ties in region standings. I don't know about region III-AAAA, but the following comes from the Region IV AAAA Handbook, Schedules and By-laws:

"If the teams are tied for first and split their head to head contests, we will declare co or tri-champions."

Below this is the outline of tie breakers for determining the playoff seeding.

Come on, now your just bragging ! How many other schools in York county get play their home games on a soccer only field! We get to share ours with Lax and oblong football too. Do you have any ideas how many lines there are on our field sometime!! I have seen electronic drawing less confusing than a Soccer/Lax/Football paint job!

At least we do not have to take that long 2 mile (ok maybe more like 1.5 mile) hike out to the pitch!

That may be the right size but it was lined very narrow. I had been there before for other games and never seen it like that before. You had to be there ........we weren't the only ones who made a comment about it, plus we only had two referees for the Varsity game!! But I digress.....

As far as 2010 champion, I guess Clover Athletic department is wrong as that is what I was told by coaches and ad......but whatever........

I am with chief.......looking forward to some good games this weekend.

Gold Hill MS 3

also heard Oak Ridge MS (Clover) beat Spring Feild MS (Fort Mill) but did not get score.

Gold Hill has it rolling again this year! about 30 in a row now, last loss in the 2009 preseason. Good job coach!

there are other teams out there this year that are as just as good and better and hope the Herald recognizes that but I won't hold my breath.

Looks like you won't need to hold your breath now! Did you go get that press agent like I suggested????

Good luck today! Lexington will be a good challenge, and wait till you see the keeper!

Not trying to stir the pot, but I sense a serious inferiority complex on your part. It really is a conspiracy that Fort Mill and the paper are out to get Clover. What ever it is you are smoking I want some!

Hurst, we were at Jeff Cup this weekend, but I heard it was a great event as usual and sorry I could not be there to help. maybe next year. I for one want to thank you and the entire Fort Mill Girls Soccer family and the sponsors for donating their time and effort to make an event that the community can be proud of.
