Cardinal Newman 0:0 Pinewood Prep

We're twenty minutes into the boys AAA championship match. A well played match thus far, kept in order by referee Joe Balasz. One caution issued thus far, that to the Panthers' Taylor Katstanis for a hard foul near midfield on 16 minutes.

Play continues to be wide open. A Jonathan Cleary free kick from just ouside the near corner of the area curled around the wall but Panthers' goalkeeper Robert Beebe was up to the task with a reasonably easy save. Pinewood's best scoring opportunity came shortly thereafter as a shot was saved by Timmy Cunningham just barely wide ... a shot that wasn't as the linesman's flag was up. Good match thus far with no clear advantage to either squad. Both appear to have been well prepared.

We've made it to halftime, folks, still a scoreless draw here at Eugene Stone III Stadium. Just prior to the half, Pinewood's Justin White came clear and put a nice effort on frame but over both goalkeeper Timmy Cunningham and the crossbar. White's subsequent outburst at the AR for declaring a goal kick, however, placed his name in referee Joe Balasz's book for dissent in the 40th minute. That could be an important factor as two Panthers are playing with cautions.

The second half gets underway, and within a minute Jonathan Cleary hammered a strong shot just right of the frame. Then after a subsequent call which went against Pinewood's Brandon Phinney, Phinney is shown the yellow card for dissent. Back up the pitch goes Pinewood, and a hard foul on Pennington Nieri gives the Panthers a free kick. Nieri's name goes into the book, but nothing comes of the set piece, and we're still scoreless at Stone.

GOAL! Cardinal Newman 1:0 Pinewood Prep

Robert Beebe begins to collect a ball inside the goalie box and appeared to be nudged (my vision was blocked at the time but that's what was said). Beebe attempted to regain full control but the AR ruled that crossed the end line with the ball in his hand and declared the own goal.

GOAL! Cardinal Newman 1:1 Pinewood Prep

As was the case in the girls' match, that lead didn't last long. Pinewood's Max Jaskwhich is unmarked on the left side of the area and the ball finds its way to him on the run. Two touches later, he fires a bullet into the right side netting that Timmy Cunningham had no chance to save. The tempo has increased, as have the tempers on the pitch. Just prior to the goal, referee Joe Balasz shows the yellow card to Pinewood's Blaise Rastchien and the Cardinals' Nick O' Rourke. Great match.

Full Time - Cardinal Newman 1:1 Pinewood Prep

Free football, fans! Two ten minute overtimes will be played to determine a champion. Justin White almost made it a moot point in the last minute of regulation as the ball hung around in Timmy Cunningham's area for what appeared to be an eternity to the Cardinals fans. His shot was deflected to Rashtchian who did his best to get a shot on the frame. Eventually, it came back out of the area and Pinewood's cross missed everyone and headed out the far touch line for a Cardinal Newman throw-in.

Controversy looms large here at the Graveyard. A Cardinal Newman corner kick is not collected by Robert Beebe and Nick O'Rourke heads it into the back of the net. As the Cardinals celebrate, AR David Erbacher calls over referee Joe Balasz and the play is called back. Either the ball curved out on the corner kick itself or someone was offsides -- difficult to do on a corner kick with two posts covered. Regardless, it's still 1:1.

The second overtime is under way in a great high school match. Cardinal Newman's Thomas Touma is on the end of a nice cross after a Pennington Nieri throw in placed five yards into the area. His header is right at the Panthers' Robert Beebe, though, who collects it for the save. More free football looms large.
