taken off of the NC forum..... new Atlantic Soccer League The Atlantic Soccer League, a new boys' regional league sanctioned by US Club Soccer, will begin play in November 2010. The ASL has announced an initial acceptance of eight clubs and will select up to 16 to participate in its inaugural season of play. Serving U15, U16, U17 & U18 teams from clubs up and down the East Coast, the ASL already includes Beach FC (VA), Bethesda SC (MD), CESA (SC), FC Frederick (MD), Freestate (MD), PWSI (VA), SAC (MD), Triangle FC (NC) and YMS (PA). http://www.aslsoccer.net/Looks like a move by non-Academy clubs to offer alternative. For CESA......they could play R3PL in Fall and then in lieu of HS offer this. Year round soccer.....

I'd say so...how else do you continue to show value? Link up with an English club (also done in Charlotte by non-Academy club)? Re-name Super Y and move it from the summer into the winter/spring?

This is more like the ECNL for the boys. They are only playing in 3-4 tournaments.

In my daughters age division we have 2 of the top teams in the country in our region 3 premier league. A couple players in our Region 3 premier league are even on the national team. Do the clubs just want to play more games in these other leagues or are these clubs planning on leaving Region 3 premier league?

What a joke of a league. Is the CESA membership really going to buy the reasons this would be good? Come on. CESA's top players should go to USSF Academy clubs yesterday. That's where it's at for the Men's side.

One little correction Buck. 3 top ranked teams and 5 national team players from R3PL. Best competition in the country for U-17 Girls.

Sweet/ Delta,
Well then if the best competition is in our back yard. Why the need to play in another league?
In youth aau, little league baseball, softball, and basketball these teams all play regionally, then if they win in their region they advance to a national championship.(much less travel). It seems soccer clubs want to travel right out of the gate. Just wondering what a soccer club is trying to accomplish.

Unless I'm missing something.....this new league CESA has joined is boys only. Has nothing to do with girls.

It doesn't seem that US Club Soccer has many important leagues or tournaments. US Youth Soccer Association appears to have all of the well recognized events (US National Championship Series, Developmental Academy, Premier League, etc.) so why these clubs feel the need to join a US Club Soccer league as well is beyond me.

Why join a new league? To give as many players the opportunity to play at as high a level as their ability, commitment, cost, etc will allow them. It seems that many believe that the DA is the end all and there is no use playing if you are not in the Academy. Well, let's face it, only @ 40 players will make the full time roster for 2 teams (4 age groups) in Academy, U15-U16 and U17-U18. There are many talented players who have the ability to play at that level but for what ever reason, (money, politics, etc) do not. And many are not on a team qualified for R3 Premier. Do you just cast them aside (play challenge league) or do you find as many opportunities for players to play soccer, go to showcases and if they desire to play at college, be seen by college scouts. I would hope that CUFC, sorry SC United, would embrace this new league for some of their teams.

They are not re-name Super Y and moving it to the Winter/Spring. Super Y is run by US Soccer Federation and is very strong up North and in Flordia.

Cant put all your eggs in one basket, what if you didn't qualify for R3PL then you would be left out of top quality play, ECNL makes a club commit to three age divisions 15's, 16's and 17's. Also I think it is excellent for exposure to different regional college coaches. Plus it gets old playing the Boca's, PV's and GA teams year after year.

It also gives boys who aren't on a R3PL team or academy team a chance to showcase their talents at tournaments that their teams may not be apart of.
Is this new league exclusive to CESA players or like their CAP and College Combine open to players regardless of where they are rostered?

Sweet,then why does other youth sports like basketball, baseball, softball not travel like soccer leagues do? They might travel regionally, but not the miles a youth soccer club does to get the kids looked at. And in the end there's more college scholarships available in those sports than soccer. Do you think soccer is the worst bang for your buck if your child chooses soccer over other sports?

What's really funny(?) is that the vast majority of players travel all over the country chasing that elusive college scholarship .... and then end up playing at Newberry, PC, Aiken, Charleston, etc.
And just to eliminate a few needless posts, I realize there are exceptions to the rule!
PS: I am not trying to paint a negative picture of the above college's or the quality of the players, but rather challenging 'the system' as it is 'sold' to our youth!

Soccer is a team sport unlike tennis and golf, so in my opinion soccer gives you the best bang for your buck in chasing scholarship money in a team sport. As far as the travel issue, soccer is a middle class sport played in the suburbs unlike the other sports you mentioned. Yes there are always exceptions, however soccer is mostly played by the higher income class than the other major sports. As far as scholarships look no further than your daughters club team, I think 8 out of the starting 11 so far have received soccer money for there college, not too bad at all.

At the cost of having great memories and good times. What is wrong with having your daughter travel the state or country playing a sport she enjoys. I have had wonderful times with my daughter over the years and will continue following her to all of her college matches, and for anyone that knows me I have a very nice life outside of soccer.

I guess your income level makes you ineligible for this post. For the middle class family though who has an athletic child who has a choice between soccer and a less traveled sport at a young age they would probably be better off steering them in a more affordable sport. i have know idea what your daughter was offered, but she's the only one on our team that's going big D1. We've had atleast 40 players pass through that team the past several years. Those are not very good odds. Also, the ones that have been offered something on our team are not all getting full rides if any. Us middle class families will never come close to what $$$ we've put into club soccer the last 10 years. I would add it all up, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to hold my dinner down.

I always thought our family (and not just our daughter) got a lot more out of travel soccer than the possibility of a college scholarship. The times spent with our daughter going to tournaments, R3PL games, practices etc was incredible and we wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. The skills, friendships and lessons that our daughter gained through it all have shaped her into the fine young woman she has become. If the only reason you do this is for the possibility of a scholarship, I think you're missing all that is to be gained.

That is the million dollar question that USYSA has been asking the last few years. And I think the answer is simple; power and money. US Club was started because of a difference in power. US Club wanted a single teams and clubs to have all the power and USYSA was organized around state organizations and then clubs to have the power. And the DA in my opinion was started because USSoccer saw the money that the State Organizations and Clubs where amassing and wanted in on some of that action so they started the DA. It is amazing the money that flows through Club soccer and parents do not think twice about it. Personally I think it is because it is one of the few club sports that allows both men and women to compete and train at an equal level under one roof, which has doubled the money and demographics for the sport at the club level...

Getting to play soccer in college might not only be about getting money but might also be about getting into a college you might not otherwise be able to get into. Athletics departments have a fair amount of pull in the admissions office for the right kids.

I've been down this road a few times. Most D1 women's soccer programs have 12-14 full scholarships available to them. Most D1 college women programs carry 25-30 players. They have to split the scholarships up, or count on several girls who want to walk on.
Had a visit with one college who didn't have any scholarships available for field players in 2011, they had to reserve the scholarships for goalies, because they were losing their goalies to graduation.
