Now that players have reported to preseason camp, does anyone have any news on the teams? P.S. -- I don't even want to talk about West Ham!

Alabama A&M to drop men's program
As players, many of them from overseas, began arriving on campus for the 2010 season, they got word that this will be the last season for men's soccer at Alabama A&M, once a national power. It's the 20th Division I men's soccer program dropped since 1990.
The Department of Athletics announced Friday the elimination of men's soccer from its list of sponsored activities after the 2010 season.
The fact the Bulldogs are the only men's soccer program in the SWAC hurt, forcing them to patch together an independent schedule, but finances were the bottom line.
Coach Salah Yousif, the current men’s soccer coach, will lose his head coaching position but will remain with the university as an assistant professor in the department of economics & finance. All existing scholarship agreements will be honored and the school will grant full eligibility releases to any other institution that seeks players who wish to transfer. Yousif has a 238-121-24 record in 21 years with the Bulldogs, who were second in Division I in 1981. Over the last eight years, A&M has had just two winning seasons.
SCHOOL (LAST YEAR) *Houston Baptist (1990) North Texas (1993) Illinois State (1994) Central Michigan (1994) Arkansas-Little Rock (1995) Maryland-Eastern Shore (1996) Texas-Pan American (1997) Northeastern Illinois (1997) South Alabama (1998) Miami-Ohio (1998) Eastern Michigan (1998) Charleston Southern (2002) Fresno State (2002) TCU (2002) The Citadel (2002) East Carolina (2005) Vanderbilt (2005) Western Kentucky (2008) Maine (2009) Alabama A&M (2011) *Later reinstated.

The university of Alabama is installing a full size jumbotron at there soccer stadium (the only one in the country for soccer) this season. Guess not all soccer programs are in financial trouble.

transplant, Ain't no Wando's and Mauldin's in 3A. You will certainly earn it if you win it this year.

Trans: That's not a probably. That's a for sure. High school and College Football/Basketball program revenues pretty much pay for everything in an athletic program. The Alabama soccer coach needs to say thank you Coach Saban. "Roll Tide".
Does MESA have a Jumbotron, I have not been there lately.

Trans, I think Riverside will win it again this year, if not Riverside, Mauldin. As far as Riverside getting a jumbotron, I would settle for a 50 pound sack of grass seed.

Actually, the last time I looked, slightly more than 50% of all division I and II football programs and slightly more than 50% of all division I basketball programs run a deficit. This despite the fact that most universities typically heavily subsidize athletics and administrative costs are typically underreported.
However, if you had said "most" and "Division 1-A", you'd no doubt been largely correct.
And if you had said "Alabama" - with more than $90M in football revenues (couldn't find profits for same time period, but a few years before they were north of $40M), then you'd have been absolutely correct.
Key here is that "revenue" isn't the same as "profit" and that "Alabama" isn't the same as "Furman."

I just read on Alabamas athletic website that the Jumbotron was moved from the football stadium to the soccer stadium. Sounds like the National Champs must of got a new and improved Jumbotron. I didn't think a girls soccer program would be able to support or pay for something like that.

No. 12 South Carolina Blanks Northeastern, 3-0 Ali Glemser, Gabrielle Gilbert score first career goals
BROOKLINE, Mass. Two Gamecocks earned their first career goals, and the team earned another courtesy of an own goal, to lead No. 12 South Carolina to a 3-0 shutout of Northeastern Sunday at the newly resurfaced Parson's Field. The Gamecocks improve to 2-0-0 while Northeastern drops to 0-1-0 in its home opener.
Freshman Gabrielle Gilbert hit the game-winning goal at 10:26 and redshirt sophomore Ali Glemser hit the second goal at 32:55 to score for Carolina. Northeastern gave up the final goal at 81:12 after the goalkeeper mishandled the ball from her own teammate following a shot by Maria Petroni.
For the second consecutive game, the Gamecocks ended a home unbeaten streak by topping the Huskies who went undefeated on their home pitch in 2009 and had not lost at Parsons Field since October 2008. In Friday's victory, South Carolina ended a 20-game Boston University home winning streak.
Senior Mollie Patton earned her second straight shutout to begin the season while tying her career best with eight saves in the game. She now sits nine shutouts away from tying the SEC record for career solo shutouts (33).
Carolina's first look of the game came in the fifth minute when a Brittiny Rhoades corner kick found Ellen Fahey's head in front of the net, but the ball went wide right to prevent the threat. The Gamecocks were able to get on the board at 10:26 when a flurry in front of the net resulted in the goal by Gilbert. Brooke Jacobs sent a cross into the box that resulted in two blocked shots before Gilbert was able to get the rebound off a Kayla Grimsley shot to score her first career goal. The assist was the second of the weekend for Grimsley, a Hermann Trophy candidate as a junior.
Twenty minutes later, Glemser grabbed her first career points after taking the ball at midfield from a Lolly Holland header. Glemser broke past the defenders and beat the keeper to get off a shot that hit the post and rebounded back to her for the goal at 32:55.
In the second half, the Gamecocks were able to use different lineups and get experience for seven freshmen as the team controlled possession throughout the half and ended with an 8-6 shot advantage for the stanza. Carolina's best look came in the 55th minute when another Jacobs cross landed near Grimsley, who took a shot from 10 yards out that was blocked in a scrum in front of the net.
The final goal came at 81:12 when Northeastern goalkeeper Sarah Fylak mishandled a ball and saw it roll into the back of her net.
South Carolina heads home next weekend when the team hosts the Gamecock Courtyard Cup at Stone Stadium. Louisville will be the home opening opponent Friday at 7:30 p.m. to start a six-game home stand for Carolina.

Is that South Carolina's actual uniform or is that training gear? I thought USC was always an adidas program. Since when did the Gamecocks start wearing Under Armour? Those unis in the picture look like a Rugby kit.

This is actually not a good rebound for the Terriers. Alabama State is perhaps the worst team in NCAA Division I.
Also, it is amazing how we now have Wofford and USC Upstate as the weakest teams in the state. For years SCSU made sure that no one else would be in the basement of SC but them, but how things have changed in Orangeburg: http://www.libertyflames.com/index.cfm?PID=10869&NewsID=5674
I also assume Wofford will make a coaching change after this season just like them men did a couple of years ago and bring someone that can bring back some respect to that women's program.
Some good games coming up, so lets see what else happens in what has been an interesting season so far.

dadofnumber2 - Last year's Wofford women's soccer team was one of the better teams I have seen in years at Wofford. They were not far away from being a very good Southern Conference team. They lost eight games by one goal. I am sure Coach Polson will assist in any way to help Coach Kiah to become successful.

My Lady Vols dropped their opener in the Lady Vol Classic to #12 Maryland 1-3. Moments of brilliance, some not. Shots and fouls about the same. Maryland is a good looking team and had blinding speed up top. The Lady Vols had intervals where Maryland was off balance and a step behind but just not enough to take the match. We take on Richmond tomorrow and Maryland faces Kennesaw State.
