Anyone been before and have anything to say about value of event?

I think it started around 10 last year and yes it's a all day event..
My daughter has been three times and it is well worth the money..Lunch and some kind of gear from addidas and soccer games all day ending with a question and answer session with several college coaches..If you are looking for contacts this is a good event to attend..At least four coaches have shown an interest in my daughter that saw her play last year..

On the girls side seems like a lot of schools (including out of state 2 SEC, and 1 Big Ten)but no USC, Clemson, COFC, or Coastal? Do these schools not look at instate players through an event like this? Have often seen the questions asked about why the big schools do not get more local talent guess this is a manifestation those questions. Still looks like a good chance for the players to get seens and learn about the process. In fact I would think for the younger players learning the "process" might be more important.

Anyway thanks for the info! Sounds like it might be worth the trip.

Chief,
Those schools usually make the combine and I'm sure the list will continue to grow. There are several players from each of those schools that have SC connections.

Would guess you are right but it is just about a month out on something CESA has planned for a year. Just thought these schools would be some of the first to jump on the local college showcase. I guess these schools likely already know the talent pool here and know who they "need" to see. From a PR stand point it just seems to me that these schools would be waving the flag a little more at the local events.
I mean from a business stand point if you were trying to fill your summer camps would'nt you get out in the local area and get the players who are most likely to come to the camps to see you as possibley intrested in them?

Gotta credit CESA for giving the kids the chance to be seen locally.

Draconian.

We faced this problem 10 years ago. Glad to see South Carolina is ahead of Arizona.....at least in this department.

Great article, Although I have to give credit to the state of Arizona. If every state followed Arizona, the soccer club costs would be more affordable for everyone. It would also force clubs to give the youth soccer kids a break which is wanted by most youth soccer players and follow the model of the big three sports. If soccer was moved back to the high schools, soccer would be following the same model of other youth sports. If your a good soccer player a college coach is going to find you just like they find football, baseball, basketball, softball players in the high school athletic programs. And if club soccer would back off these kids a little bit, the girl in the article wouldn't have to make the tough decision.

Are you saying that college baseball players only played HS baseball? Are you suggesting that it's prudent for a talented basketball player to skip AAU and summer camps and just rely on his HS team even if he/she is in a weak school and playing in a weak conference? Have you ever looked at the club volleyball and hockey teams in the west and northeast?

I'm pretty sure if you look back at the origin of what you're so upset about, you wouldn't find that soccer clubs across America went door to door begging people for players. On the contrary, I'll bet you'd find parents out there who were unsatisfied with middle school and high school situations and went looking for someone to provide more. I'll bet you'll find that parents went to recreational leagues at u-12 and u-10 and wanted someone to do more than what was being done. I'll bet you'll find that the club that is willing to 'back off' is also the club that finds itself asking 'how come there are kids in our town driving 1-3 hours to play somewhere else and not playing in town?' You'll also find parents and players wishing their hometown club would offer more.

Harry, i don't think that's the point. hs basketball, baseball players can play their hs season and then participate in aau, camps, etc in the off season, which is currently being done in these other sports. youth soccer clubs are putting pressure on these kids to make a decision because hs soccer and club soccer are starting to overlap. i think most youths don't want to make a tough decision, they do want to play both hs and club and there's nothing wrong with that as long as they don't overlap. if a youth basketball player or baseball player went to their high school coach and said i'm going to miss my hs game because of another venue, they would be kicked off the hs team. I was watching the under armour hs football game (which is a college showcase) on espn tonight. do you think under armour would schedule this venue during hs football season. NO. AAU basketball also doesn't overlap with HS sports. Girls hs softball leagues don't overlap with girls softball summer leagus. HS Soccer lasts 3 months, is 9 months a year not enough for these soccer clubs.

No 9 months is not enough cause if they only play 9 months the clubs only get paid for 9 months. It is about the MONEY

Where is all of this overlap? U13-14/JV? Didn't U15-18(high school age) end with state cup and high school has not yet started?

I have to ask, because I keep seeing comments about 'the money'. I keep hearing about directors lining their pockets. Can someone back this up with something factual? I have seen the premier teams extend their 'season'. I have seen players presented with more opportunities. I would imagine the Delta Dog's travel expenses have risen and made it more expensive for him. Which fees that go to the club/directors increased? Is there a fee that the players paid to the club associated with playing on an ECNL team in addition to being on the premier/challenge team? What is the cost of the college combine? Is it mandatory? What is the fee for being on a premier team this year? What was it last year? What about the boys in the national league? What was paid to the club last year vs. this year?

If I'm not mistaken, recently the academy teams went from training 2 times per week to 3 times per week without an increase in fees. The older girls team camp last summer featured 10+ college coaches training the teams and a game with the Korean National team and the kids were fed. The total cost was $100. I'll answer my own question above and tell you that the College Combine costs $60 this year. There will be 30+ college coaches for men and 30+ for women. The kids will be fed and get a piece of Adidas Clothing. None of these ventures seem to add up for a club who is only interested in making money.

In short, where specifically is the extra money coming from that resulted from the lengthening of the season that these directors are so focused on?

Why don't the clubs just be transparent and put a pie-graph out or Excel document with where their funds are spent? Seems to me, the club's constituents (parents that pay and kids that play) could demand this from the clubs. Then you would know how much is being spent on: Club Directors, Coaching staff, Officials, Facilities, Maintenance, Registration and State Association fees, Uniforms, etc.

It looks like area schools will be out AT LEAST through tomorrow. Does CESA have a contingency plan if districts choose to have school on MLK day?

They wouldn't expect kids to skip school, would they?

Another issue is lingering snow on the fields. If this happens, the combine will likely be moved to next Sunday. I wonder how much that would hurt college attendance.

And Fort Mill will be having Finals on Monday.

"We will be making a decision on Friday regarding our facilities and their readiness for play on Monday. We will also at that time have a better idea of the number of school districts who will have chosen to have school on Monday. We will put out an email to all participants on Saturday morning informing them of the decision."

Just returned from the Combine. It was very well executed and I was impressed with how well it was organized. I know a lot of coaches left early because of the cold and rain, but the club had no control over that. A special kudos to the University of SC, University of Kentucky, Penn State and Clemson (the ones I saw) for staying most of the combine and watching as many girls as they could. It was a first for us and I look forward to next year.

I heard some players left early too due to the conditions. What was the total player attendance? Where did the players come from? Can anyone provide a breakdown? Were there any comments from the college coaches in regards to the level of play? Enquiring minds want to know!!!

I know there were players that blew off the 6:15pm games because all the coaches had left by then, in fact, we were going to but they needed my daughter to fill in for another team. They were just playing for the joy of playing in the rain and cold. There were 8 teams with what looked like an average of 18 players on each team, and each game was 1 hour long with no breaks. Thirty minutes into each game, there was a massive substitution (including keepers-there were about 16 of them)and the game continued. College coaches did not speak to players or parents. They kept their distance and just focused on watching the games which were located on one of two fields that were side by side. Meanwhile, children built snowmen from the snow off the hills next to the fields.
