Epworth Children's Home to get a kick out of soccer
The Dreher High School boys' soccer program will provide a weekend of soccer for children at Columbia’s Epworth Children's Home.
Clad in Dreher t-shirts, the children will attend a varsity match at 7:30 tonight, Friday, March 25, at Memorial Stadium featuring Dreher and the state’s top-ranked AAA team, Chapin. On Saturday, March 26, coaches, varsity and junior varsity players will conduct a soccer clinic for the children from 10 a.m. to noon. There, varsity and junior varsity soccer players and coaches will demonstrate and help the children learn technical and tactical soccer skills. A cookout is planned after the clinic, hosted by the parents with families donating equipment, including cleats.
Coach Clark McCarthy, a 2009 Lander graduate, was hired in December to lead the Dreher soccer program. The boys responded to McCarthy's approach to soccer: work hard, show respect and give back to the game that has given you so much.
Founded in 1896, Epworth Children's home serves children ages four through 18. It’s Mission Statement is to serve children, youth and families through a caring, accepting and safe Christian community, where hurts are healed; hope is nurtured; and faith in God self and others is developed.
