I believe the length of the suspension depends on how the referee describes the reason for the ejection. Here is the ejection form to be submitted by the referee and coach/AD for all sports. The reasons for ejection that are available on the form to select are:

FIGHTING With Contact
FIGHTING No Contact
TAUNTING OR BAITING
OBSCENE GESTURES
PROFANITY (Give details in box below; include EXACT words used)
TWO UNSPORTSMANLIKE FOULS
FLAGRANT FOUL
DISRESPECTFULLY ADDRESSING OR CONTACTING AN OFFICIAL (Give details in box below; give EXACT words used)

I believe the length of suspension depends on which reason is used and the corresponding description.

This is a generic form that the SCHSL uses for all sports. It is not soccer specific. Big problem here is how a referee will report "DOGSO".

If the last defender attempts to tackle a forward going to goal, doesn't get the ball, and the referee deems that the defender who commits the foul is the last defender back......guess what?

It's a straight red.

What box does the referee check to explain to the SCHSL official what happened?

Let me explain this to you in basketball terms. The player is ejected from the game and gets a 2-game ban for essentially preventing a lay-up.

Sound fair? Does the punishment fit the crime?

The form says "If the offense does not fall into one of the categories below, explain in the box below and leave these boxes blank."

Also, preventing an obvious goal scoring opportunity which happens an average of 2-4 times per match is quite different from preventing a lay up opportunity that occurs 20-40 times in a basketball game. Ie, fouling to prevent an obvious goalscoring opportunity in soccer is more equivalent to preventing 10 basketball layups!

You commit a tactical foul to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. I'm not talking about tripping a player from behind, grabbing a jersey or grabbing a handful of hair. Just a foul. You missed the ball, got the girl.

Expulsion + 2 game suspension.

In basketball if you grab a player on a breakaway, to "prevent them from getting hurt (and scoring)"....it's a personal foul (you are allowed four more).

I understand that 2 points in basketball is considerably less than a goal in soccer, but you can do this five times in basketball (maximum 10 points) and your only penalty is that you are disqualified for the remainder of the game.

In high school soccer.......she gets to sit out 2 more games!

...or four if she expresses her feelings about having to sit for two.

Exactly!

And if the last defender attempts to tackle a forward going to goal, does get the ball, the center judge is not in a good enough position to see the play, the AR is scared to speak up at the time, and the center deems that the defender who commits the (non)foul is the last defender back...guess what? You are correct, and the powers-that-be at the SCHSL don't care if you have 20 witnesses and video proof of the refs mistake – it's the same punishment you'd get if you got a straight red for violent conduct or you punched an opponent.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Well, Dutch Fork appealed a red card issued in Tuesday's match vs. Irmo and got it rescinded so that the girl is playing tonight vs. Lexington. Don't know what kind of evidence Dutch Fork may have had, but the SCHSL must have bought it.

From what I've been told, video evidence is all that is acceptable. It's a good idea to have someone recording your games.

I understand that video evidence was used in Dutch Fork's appeal.

The SCHSL has a long-standing reputation for poor rulings in appeals processes in all sports. In football, it kowtows to veteran coaches and big programs such as Summerville and Stratford. I can only assume the same is true in soccer.
