It is going to be bittersweet for the 92s. Both the boys' and girls' teams have made great runs these past years! It would be nice to see one of them win regionals (again).

Agreed. I wish I were able to watch the CESA 92 Premier Boys play. They've been an exceptional group over the years and I hope they finish strong! Best of luck!

Ever since they were u13s they (minus and add a player or two to this year's team) have been something special. Hopefully Coach M will have them mentally prepared. They have a tough Georgia team in the round robin stage. It won't be easy.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 17, 2011) – More than 180 teams, including three defending 2010 US Youth Soccer National Champions and six Regional Champions, kicked off the 2011 US Youth Soccer Region III Championships today at Richard Siegel Soccer Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn. All but one defending Regional Champion won their first game in the tournament. Defending Regional and National Champion Solar 94 Red (TX-N) was the lone defending champion to fall on day one, losing 4-1 to local team Brentwood 94 Girl Premier (TN).

In the Under-14 Boys bracket, the Dallas Texans 97 Boys (TX-N) team started its quest for a regional championship with an early goal by Samuel Valadez in the sixth minute of their game versus SAA Real Madrid (FL). Valadez followed up with another goal in the fourteenth minute. SAA Real Madrid from Florida got a goal back before half, but the Dallas Texans added two more goals in the second half to secure a 4-1 win.

On the next field over, Lonestars Red (TX-S) and local team Harpeth FC (TN) battled to a 1-1 tie. The second half began and ended with goals, with Jose Cervantes netting a goal for Lonestars in the thirty-seventh minute. Harpeth FC leveled the score in dramatic fashion on a PK in the sixty-ninth minute, just before the final whistle.

FC Dallas 97 Boys Premier (TX-N) gave an emphatic opening statement in the tournament with two first half goals versus 97 Boys LA Fire Red (LA). Edgar Mata added a hat trick in the second half to two other second half goals by FC Dallas to secure a 7-0 victory.

In a battle of Premier League qualifying teams, West Pines United (FL) beat Brentwood 97 Boys (TN) 3-1. Ricardo Oliveros scored twice for West Pines in the first half and Louis Brown added a third for his team in the second half. Jonathan Heckman scored for Brentwood in the last minute of the game, but West Pines United held on for the win.

On the U-15 Girls’ side, Atlanta Fire United 96 Elite (GA) scored early and often en route to a 9-0 victory over Little Rock FC 96 (AR). Emily Kuelbs and Grace Damarska each netted two goals for Atlanta Fire United. The team will look to continue their goal scoring throughout the rest of the tournament.

Two second-half goals lifted the Lonestars 96 Red (TX-S) to victory over West Pines United FC 95/96 (FL). Lonestars player Mikaela Harvey scored in the forty-third minute and again in the seventy-fifth to lead her team on day one.

A hard-fought game between CESA 95 G Premier (CS) and NASA 14 Elite of (GA) ended in a 1-1 tie. Sarah Renfro of CESA opened the scoring with a strike in the twelfth minute. Leigh Purinton leveled the score with a goal in the nineteenth minute for NASA 14 Elite. The two teams each had scoring chances throughout the rest of the game but could not capitalize.

D’Feeters 96 (TX-N) scored three first half goals and followed up with three second half goals on its way to a 6-0 victory over FC Alliance 96 Black (TN) on day one. D’Feeters was led by Kristina Schulz, who scored twice in the first half.

In U-18 girls, R3PLE had a great day going 4-0-1 with Concorde Fire Elite getting the tie with Texans Red. CESA '92 U-18 Girls gained a hard fought 2-1 win over Brentwood with goals from Mary Stanton and Brayden Miller.

Mandeville Lakers (LA) with one former and one current SC player (Amy Hoover, Morgan Cutts) took a hard loss against a very strong Lonestar team from STX. Wishing them better luck for today's game.

In U-19 girls, HC United from FL (includes 4 Furman players incl. one former CESA from SC, and 1 from USC) pulled together for a good 2-0 win over team from OK.

And, congratulations to the SCUMP '96 girls in u-14 age group getting their first win in their first game at their first Southern Regional.

The later games at 6:00 had best weather in years... only 85 degrees without rain. Would be nice if that "cold wave" held up.

The U17 Boys lead for most of the game and had a late goal from Central Jackson Mississippi to end up tied 1-1. Next up Cobb FC Premier at 8pm. All games have been delayed due to early morning storms.

U-18 CESA '92 Girls win 1-0 over Oklahoma FC (OK). Another hard fought win with winning goal scored by Brayden Miller (2nd goal of tournament). Great team defensive effort to hold on throughout 2nd half, Taylor Fragnito had an absolutely stellar day in goal. The team now leads the bracket (GSA (GA) tied Brentwood 0-0) and is assured advance to quarter final round.

U-18 R3PLE girls continued to do well today going 3-1-1 with only loss coming in game between 2 R3PLE teams. Concorde Fire Elite (incl. SC player Lane Czura from Hilton Head) over CASL 1-0. Mandeville Lakers (Hoover, Cutts) bounced back today with big 5-1 win, but had a tough draw and face Team Boca tomorrow.

SCUMP U-14 girls now tied for 2nd in bracket but still have good chance to advance if they win tomorrow's game against team that is 0-2 in bracket.

The "cold wave" held up (75 deg. at 6pm game), but as momofboy said the morning rains came in. The u-19 girls games were postponed 'til tomorrow.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 18, 2011) – The US Youth Soccer Region III Championships continued on a day of storms and sun today at the Richard Siegel Soccer Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Early morning thunder added drama to the event as players competed in day two of preliminary games, setting themselves up for a possible quarterfinal berth. More than 100 college coaches have taken in games at the Region Championships, scouting some of the top talent in the area. After today’s weather issues caused a four hour delay in games, tomorrow’s matches will follow true to schedule, beginning at 8 a.m. CT and continuing throughout the day with the final matches beginning at 8 p.m.

Before the storms rolled in, the Dallas Texans Red 96 (TX-N) scored a pair of goals in each half to come away with a 4-3 victory over Vestavia Steamers 96 Black of Alabama. After after falling behind in the first half, Vestavia player Nathanael Dauphin punched in three consecutive goals to give his team a 3-2 in the sixtieth minute. But it wasn’t enough as the Dallas Texans scored in twice in six minutes to reclaim the lead and secure the victory.

Despite numerous scoring chances in the game, CESA 95 Premier (SC) and NYSA Celtic 96 Green (OK) played to a 0-0 draw. The first half was evenly matched, but in the second half CESA created the better opportunities. Some unlucky bounces, the goal posts and the crossbar kept CESA from netting a goal and earning three points.

Hometown team Brentwood 96 Premier (TN) scored late in the second half to draw 1-1 with GSA 96 Phoenix Red (GA). GSA scored in stoppage time in the first half to claim the 1-0 lead. Instead of hanging their heads, the Brentwood 96 Premier players continued to fight and scored in the seventy-fourth minute against the run of play. Brentwood now sits atop its pool going into the final day of preliminary games.

Mississippi Chicago Fire Juniors 96 Premier (MS) scored two first-half goals against IMG Soccer Academy (FL) to take a 2-0 lead into half-time. Gregory Nickles opened the scoring with a goal in the fourteenth minute. Joshua Stowers doubled the Mississippi Fire lead with a goal in the thirty-third minute. If the first half belonged to Fire, the second half belonged to IMG, who scored two goals of its own in the last 15 minutes of play to steal a 2-2 draw.

After waiting through a weather delay, the U-16 Girls took the field Saturday afternoon. NWA Lightning Strikers (AR) proved that lightning can strike twice, scoring two goals on their way to a 2-0 victory over Mississippi Chicago Fire Juniors 95G Premier (MS).

GSA 95 Phoenix Red (GA) followed up a big win on day one with a win over Gulf Coast United Futbol Club (MS). Rachel Garcia opened the scoring in tenth minute and Lauren Tanner added two second half goals to lead GSA. Tanner is now the top scorer in the age group with five goals in two days.
Concorde Fire South Elite (GA) got out to an early lead over FC Alliance 95G Black (TN) when Savannah Jordan scored in the fourteenth minute. FC Alliance leveled with a forty-second minute goal by Summer Lanter. Twenty minutes later, Allison Wetherington put away the game winner for Concorde Fire in the sixty-third minute.

Defending National Champion Sting 95 (TX-N) won their second game in as many days with a 2-0 victory over BUSA 95 ECNL (AL) on Saturday. Morgan Williams scored a first half goal and Britt Blackwell added one in the second half to place Sting 95 at the top of its pool going into the last day of preliminary games.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 21, 2011) – Twenty-four teams have played their way into the final matches at the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The winners of tomorrow’s games will qualify for the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Phoenix, Ariz., July 26-25, at the Reach 11 Sports Complex.

Three defending US Youth Soccer Region III Champions—Sting 96 (TX-N), Sting 95 (TX-N) and Alpharetta Ambush Elite Red (GA)—have the opportunity to win back-to-back titles tomorrow,. All three teams also made it to the National Championship game, with Sting 95 and Alpharetta Ambush both winning the title.

The U-15 girls started the semifinal day off with drama as Lonestars 96 Red (TX-S) and defending regional champion Sting 96 (TX-N) battled to a 2-2 tie. Lonestars tallied an early lead when Mikaela Harvey scored in the third minute, her fourth of the tournament. Sting leveled with Rachel Holden’s forty-seventh-minute goal. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Sting received a red card and was forced to play a man down for remainder of the game. The Lonestars were able to capitalize on the advantage and restored their one-goal lead in the seventy-seventh minute. Sting fought back and in the final minute of play, Allison Ganter scored to send the game into overtime. Sting was the eventual victor, out shooting Lonestars 4-1 on penalty kicks.

D’Feeters 96 (TX-N) set up an all-Texas final as they beat 95 CASL Spartan Elite (NC) 1-0. Hannah Alspach scored the only goal of the game with her twenty-seventh minute strike. Dallas-based D’Feeters will now face cross-town rival Sting for the chance to play in Phoenix.

Having lost in the National Championship final in 2009, Ponte Vedra Storm (FL) played motivated and left no doubt as they convincingly beat Lonestar 93 Red of South Texas 4-0. Havana Solaun opened the scoring in the thirteenth minute and US National Team Pool Player Morgan Brian added a goal of her own in the twenty-first. Two more goals in the second half sent Ponte Vedra back to the regional final for the third time in four years where they will meet its longtime rival Team Boca (FL).

In the second Texas-Florida matchup in the U-18 girls’ semifinals, Team Boca (FL) needed to come from behind to advance to the finals over D’Feeters 93 (TX-N). D’Feeters ended the first half on a forty-second-minute goal by Jacquelyn Andersen. That lead lasted nearly 30 minutes until Team Boca leveled in the seventy-first minute and took the lead in the eightieth off goals by Abby Carr and Ana Cuffia.

Gulf Coast United Dynamo (MS) followed up a dramatic shootout victory in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win in the semis over 94 HFC Red (NC). Jon Moreno made the best of his chance in the fifty-third minute and scored the only goal of the game by Gulf Coast United.

The other U-16 Boys semi-final was decided by a 1-0 score line. CESA 94 Premier of South Carolina only needed Nicolas Poupore’s thirty-eighth-minute goal. His strike sent CESA through to the final and is the only South Carolina team to play on the final day of the Region III Championships.

A dynamic LAFC Houstonians (TX-S) fell today to GSA 96 Phoenix Red (GA). Houstonians had numerous early chances, including a penalty kick in the eleventh minute. GSA keeper Greyson Walldorff effectively turned the momentum of the half when he saved the spot kick and Christopher Morgan stole a goal for GSA before the half. The resilient Georgia team team came out with confidence to play in the second half and netted two late goals by Joseph Sandres and Gabriel Guerra to grab a seat in the finals.

After each team found the net once in the first 80 minutes of play, Dallas Texans Red 96 (TX-N) and Solar Chelsea (TX-N) exploded for four goals in overtime. Dallas Texans’ Ian Sadler scored two goals in overtime, his fifth and sixth of the tournament, to give his team a 3-1 lead. Solar Chelsea fought back with goals by Casey Eaton and Alan Winn to force a shootout. Solar’s Ever Estrada came up with big saves in penalty kicks to complete the dramatic semifinal win.

Congratulations to the boys. Great coach, great team. Shame the '92 girls couldn't have a coach like Shelley at the helm and supporting their team, imagine what they may have accomplished if they had. Good luck to the boys.

He (DeltaDog) is referring to the fact that even though the 92s won 2 games in group play (which the SC 92 girls have never done before whether it was Bridge or CESA) and even though they played 4 extremely difficult games 4 days in a row, even though they had players who were starters all year decide not to make the trip at all; they should have accomplished more. He thinks that RS should have let someone who has never coached the 94 boys take their quarterfinal game so that he could coach the 92s instead of letting 2 coaches who coached the 92s to a 1-0 victory in their second game take the girl's quarterfinal. RS was in a no win situation due to having two teams of his own advance to the quarterfinals in regionals. (not an easy feat) DeltaDog's daughter's team was completely out of gas and got beat bad by the R3PLE winners who went on to win the semifinal 4-0 and lost in the final by a goal.

Instead of focusing on how well they did the first 3 days, it seems he would rather dwell on the 1 awful day and blame RS, or the other 2 coaches, or the people that scheduled the 16 boys and 18 girls in the same time slot, or the club, or probably AH. I had the pleasure of watching the 92s on the first two days of the tournament upset two good teams when everybody thought they would be 3 losses and out. I'd probably choose to focus on that if my daughter were on the team. But, to each his own.

stated club policy per pearse tormey every time asked over 8 years... older team takes priority. period. all else that you've said is irrelevant. they played beautifully for three days before deserted. btw, an r3ple victory over r3plc or last place r3plw team isn't in most circles considered an upset. fortunately, the team entered the tournament recognizing the the draw. apparently you, too, didn't know enough about this team to be associated with it if you thought they were going 3 losses and out. all of which is irrelavent... older team takes priority.

You know, in thinking about this more, I'm not sure I offered a good enough explaination to gbdawgs. I think the reason is that I don't really know what DeltaDog is implying. Is it that RS doesn't support the 92 girls? Is it that he thinks the 92s could have/should have acheived more? Is it that if RS had coached the quarterfinal for the girls, they would have won? I would have to respectfully disagree with any of those claims.

To begin with, anyone that knows RS would say that he cares tremendously about those girls.

Regarding this year's 92s acheiving more, I'm looking at last year's 92s in comparison to this team. This year's team lost very good players such as GB, AT, HA, KS and the girl from Charleston that is playing for High Point University and KH who was lost due to injury. They also came to regionals after two starters quit, leaving their teammates with 3 tough games and only 12 players. Last year's team lost all 3 games in regionals. This year's team beat the TN state champions, then beat the OK state champions and won their group. Two girls that were on the challenge team last year accounted for the 3 goals. One of the victories was coached by RS, and one was not. I'm not sure what else DD was expecting them to accomplish with or without RS.

Finally, I think RS is obviously a very good coach. However, if I had gotten to watch all 4 games the 92s played this week, I would probably be on this forum singing the praises of kids like Alyssa Althoff, Ali Simpson, Casey Black, Mary Katherine Macklen and all of the other players that have worked so hard and shown such loyalty over several years. I'd also be singing the praises of the newer players who stuck it out through a long difficult year and accomplished what others couldn't/didn't. They all showed a huge amount of heart and character this week.

But again, to each his own.

So, were they or were they not deserted on the second day when RS didn't coach them? What's the difference in day 2 and day 4? You didn't come on here and take shots at RS after the second game. Why not?

Sad. Hijaking a congrats to the CESA 94 boys with more bitterness.

And in a year when the 92 Girls did better than in any other year in their history. Congrats to the girls. Shame on DeltaDog.

Agreed JAK. I'd much rather focus on the 94 boys wonderful accomplishment. I'd also give a shout out to the 93 boys who fought to the semifinals and were unfortunate that their work wasn't rewarded with a little more. The 95 boys had a great week advancing. The 92 girls were one of the last 8 teams in the southeast in this event. The 93 girls beat eventual finalists, TN, to advance out of their group before being knocked out. The 3 teams that didn't advance all had good results as well this week. I'll even congratulate the non-CESA U-14 SCUMP girls for advancing as well. Everyone knows how difficult it is to advance out of your group at regionals. Very good teams have had extreme difficulty doing it in the past regardless of what their draw was.

What they may have achieved was the opportunity to maintain the respect earned over 4 years of a longtime opponent in their last game of youth soccer. Obviously, all you think there is to achieve in a game is a winning score. Again, all irrelevant. I realize you may be slow in understanding, so let me see if I can break it down for you. Russ Shelley has (excuse me had) 2 premier teams. One team is u-16 (that would be the younger team), and one team is u-18 (that would be the older team). The club policy per the DOC is... older team takes priority. Ok, this may be where you're getting lost. That means the u-18 team (remember... the older team) will be coached by Russ Shelley if there is a schedule conflict... club policy, period. What ever problems are created by that schedule conflict, they are not the problems of the older team. Russ Shelley has been a wonderful coach for the '92 girls, but his absence from their last game (actually absent from the team's 2nd game as well) was flat wrong any way you look at it.

First of all, most of the girls that were there this week haven't faced Ponte Vedra over the last 4 years. Most of those girls saw them for the first time this year.

Second, is that really what you're worried about? Whether some kid in Florida respects your daughter as a soccer player? Wow! Since you seem to be a little slow in your understanding of human nature, let me break it down for you. The Ponte Vedra girls aren't thinking one bit about whether or not they respect your daughter. They've moved on and have other things to think about. I know, you'll tell me that she met a couple at region ODP camp and they're lifelong friends. That being the case, they'll still respect her. Or maybe they're awful friends.

Third, you've demonstrated on here that you know the ins and outs of CESA policy, SC high school rules, ODP procedures, and all else. So, I'll take you at your word that this is stated CESA policy. I'll also suggest that any organization that doesn't leave room for common sense to alter policy, probably isn't very forward thinking or big-picture oriented or customer service guided. I'm sorry the alteration of policy didn't suit you. I'd venture to say that it suited the U-16 team and I'd also venture to say that there are others on the U-18 team that saw the sense in it.

Finally, the statement that his absence was "flat wrong any way you look at it" is completely inaccurate. The way I look at it, it made a lot of sense given the circumstances. Even if it didn't please you. Ask yourself this question, if the U-18s had lost 4-0 like the South Texas Champs Lonestar did in the semifinal and your daughter maintained the respect of the Ponte Vedra players, would Russ' absence still been "flat wrong"? Since we didn't hear about it after the second day and are only hearing about it now, I'll bet not.

Harry,
I know one thing the 92's have never been humiliated 8-0 by anyone before Monday. As a matter of fact those old players you mentioned have one win and one tie against PV in there two prior matches. The outcome on Monday would have been the same with or without RS coaching the team. Shame on the players and parents who bailed out on the team before Regionals you folks are losers.

Yes, Brayden Miller who scored two goals in this her first Regionals scored her first R3PLE goal against Ponte Vedra last August in her first year with our team, but for most of the starting field players this week this was not their first year. Again, you really don't know this team that well, do you.

well, we now know you obviously have no interest in whether anyone outside SC respects our players, but the players do and work very hard to gain that respect. Perhaps you should get to know them a little better.

Nope, no previous friendships, she just had to spend later that evening amongst them at Florida's hotel with her sister, who had an opportunity to play with a Florida u-19 team based on the respect the team and coach had for her after playing against her at last year's Regionals.

Don't take my word for it, ask Pearse how he's not only answered that question every time asked but enforced it, all the way back to one of the team's player's first state cup finals at u-11 that was lost in pk's with a substitute coach. "Older team takes priority." Or, ask Carlos O. who several years later left his u-17 '90 girls to coach his u-18 boys at state cup, because "Older team...".

Translation: Forget the policies we told you, we make them up as we go along based on our best interests at the time not your daughters'. Wait a minute, "customer service guided"? The u-18's aren't customers? Sorry, I forgot... not after that game was over.
Quote:

I'm sorry the alteration of policy didn't suit you. I'd venture to say that it suited the U-16 team

I'm sure, and I have no hard feelings or animosity toward them for the decision that was made.

Before the second game the coach told the team what precarious shape the boys were in with only one point compared to the girls and in such need of his help, and they obliged. However, before the fourth game the entire team went as a group to the coach telling him they needed him at the Ponte Vedra game. Their earlier consideration was not returned. When I heard about it, the coach received a text from me briefly expressing my view before the game. He had also received at least one call I know of from another parent at the hotel expressing dissatisfaction with the decision being made after the team met with him. General consensus found amongst the parents at the game.

Finally, the statement that his absence was "flat wrong any way you look at it" is completely inaccurate. The way I look at it, it made a lot of sense given the circumstances. Even if it didn't please you.

"given the circumstances"? What, that according to you the club had underestimated the strength of the team and had so little faith in them they were written off as going 0-3 before they even got to the opening ceremonies? Or, that their unexpected success just didn't fit in the club's plans to support the younger team?
Quote:

Ask yourself this question, if the U-18s had lost 4-0 like the South Texas Champs Lonestar did in the semifinal and your daughter maintained the respect of the Ponte Vedra players, would Russ' absence still been "flat wrong"? Since we didn't hear about it after the second day and are only hearing about it now, I'll bet not.

You'd lose that bet. Shelley is an excellent coach who is loved by the u-18 team. They came to compete for him, with him, but he wasn't at the game that they needed him most. Would his presence have made a difference in the team's performance in what could be it's last club game of youth soccer? Absolutely.

Very near the end of the game I was speaking with one of the parents from Ponte Vedra and noticed the coach had finally arrived (already 8-0). I pointed out the coach's arrival to the PV parent who was stunned. He couldn't believe any club would put a team on the field to play PV without its head coach, especially a R3PLE team that knows what PV will bring.

"Shame on DeltaDog"? No, shame on CESA for having so little faith in such a wonderfully competitive team of 12 players.

1) Stanton, not on team last year. Patti, not on team last year. Fragnito, not on team last year. Sharpe, not on team last year. Stevenson, not on team last year. Lancaster, arrived last year. Miller, not on team last year. Let's not act like most of the players have a 4 year history with PV.

2) Your older daughter would have been invited to play for almost any U-19 team this year. Not becuase she played against them in previous regionals, but because they've done research to know that she started for Furman as a freshman. Thanks in very large part to the club that you speak poorly of every chance you get.

3) Yes the 18s are customers. So are the 16s. The special circumstance is that the 18s had coaches there that knew the girls very well and coached them to victory two days earlier. I'll translate "general consensus" for you: everybody you talked to which is not everyone on the team because it wouldn't suit your argument to mention the people that were flexible, understanding, and not bitter enough with the club to pounce on any opportunity that presents itself to push their own agenda.

4) If these kids can only perform when Russell is there, or couldn't give everything they had in a regional semifinal because he wasn't there; then something is wrong. I don't know these girls as well as you, and I don't think there is anyone that knows as much about anything as you do. Still, from what I know of Casey Black, Alyssa Althoff, Ali Simpson and the others; I'll bet they played as hard as they could. I'll bet they always play as hard as they can no matter who is there. I still think the bigger issue is that they brought 12 players for a 4 day event against 4 state champions, playing one of the better 4-5 teams in the country on day 4. It was just too much for them. I think you do them a bid disservice suggesting that they only go as far as their coach takes them. Are you suggesting that these kids will be in big trouble in college if they don't get the right professor? Will they not be able to play well in the Clash of Carolina's? Russell's not coaching there.

Finally, I'll echo JAK again and try to get this back to congratulating all of the players at regionals on their hard work and very good play. Please start another "I hate CESA thread" to discuss this further.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 22, 2011) – Celebrations and emotions were on display Wednesday as 12 teams claimed the US Youth Soccer Region III Championship. Each team not only was crowned Regional champion, but also earned a berth to the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 26-31 at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz.

North Texas dominated again today. Six of the 12 teams advancing to the US Youth Soccer National Championships are from North Texas. Three of those teams are part of the Dallas Texans Soccer Club. Georgia and Florida are each sending two teams to the US Youth Soccer National Championships and Oklahoma and South Carolina are sending one each.

The U-14 girls Region III championship was won by Sting (TX-N) for the second straight year. Following in the footsteps of two strong teams within the club, Sting 97 faced fellow Texas team Lonestar Red (TX-S). A Lonestar own goal in the thirteenth minute started the scoring for the Sting. Blair Thorpe and Nicole Smith each scored to help Sting continue the tradition of winning and earn a berth in the National Championships by beating Lonestar 3-0.

Defending regional champion Sting 96 (TX-N) successfully repeated as champions with a 1-0 victory over home town rival D’Feeters (TX-N). The two Dallas-based teams traveled to Tennessee to face off in the title game. The score remained at zeros until the last minute of regulation when Sting’s Sydney Kingston slotted one past the keeper and sent her team to Phoenix. Sting will be looking to avenge its loss in the 2010 National Championship Final.

In a preview of a potential matchup at the national championships, Hurricane FC (OK) beat Sting 95 (TX-N) 1-0. Hurricane Jasmine Pascoe chipped one over the keeper’s head sixty-eight minutes in to put her team on the board. Hurricane had already qualified for the National Championships by winning the National League, but today claimed the Region 3 Championship as well. As runner-up, Sting 95 will represent Region III in Phoenix.

U17 NASA Elite (GA) knows what it’s like to play on the National stage, having played last year at the National championships as a National League qualifier. This year, they will compete as Region III Champions as they overcame the Tennessee hometown team Brentwood 94 Girl Premier (TN) and the hometown crowd that came out to support the team. During a scoreless first 80 minutes, both teams created dangerous scoring chances. NASA Elite keeper Alyse Scott came up big in goal for her team, keeping a clean sheet the entire 90 minutes. A Brentwood own goal in the eightieth-minute goal was all the Georgia team needed to book a trip back to National Championships.

Two Florida teams met on the field today in the U-18 Girls final as Ponte Vedra Storm (FL) looked to return to the national stage by facing familiar foe Team Boca (FL). Ponte Vedra struck first as Havana Solaun scored her seventh goal of the tournament to give her team the 1-0 lead in the thirtieth minute. That lead held for an hour, but in the last minute of regulation, tournament MVP Tatiana Coleman netted the equalizer for Team Boca. Just two minutes into overtime Natalie Punal scored the game winner and sent Team Boca to the National Championships.

After a 0-0 game through 90 minutes, the U-19 Girls final between Sting 92 )TX-N) and the Dallas Texans (TX-N) had plenty of drama in the extra time. Sting found the net first as Samantha Howell put her team in front in the ninety-fourth minute. Alyssa Diggs equalized for the Dallas Texans just two minutes later. Less than five minutes from the threat of a shootout, Amanda Frisbie’s individual effort and willingness to take on defenders in the final third resulted in the game winning goal. Dallas Texans beat Sting 2-1 to return to the National Championships.

The U-14 Boys final crowned champion Dallas Texans 97 Red (TX-N) as they beat LAFC Houstonians (TX-S) 3-0. The Texans won their sixth game in six days with a convincing second half of soccer. After a scoreless first 35 minutes, Ivan Alvarado opened the scoring with a fortieth-minute strike. Samuel Valadez added two more late goals, his sixth and seventh of the tournament, to give the Texans the 3-0 victory.

After winning a penalty shootout to advance to the finals today, Solar Chelsea 96 (TX-N) needed more late heroics to beat GSA 96 Phoenix (GA). GSA took the early lead off an eleventh- minute strike by Joseph Sandres. Alan Winn scored for GSA in the fifty-fourth to draw level. In the last minute of play, Winn found some space at the top of the box and unleashed a shot that found the upper 90 and the back of the net. The strike proved the game and championship winner as Solar beat GSA 2-1.

CESA 94 Premier (SC) started out the week in Murfreesboro with two draws. After a team meeting, CESA rallied four straight wins, the final coming today as they beat Gulf Coast United Dynamo (MS). Nicky Watson’s thirty-sixth minute goal gave CESA the half-time lead. Having given up only one goal all tournament, CESA continued its impressive defensive form, and Watson added another goal in the eightieth minute to seal the 2-0 victory.

The U-17 Boys final pitted Florida Rush Nike (FL) against National League Champion, Tulsa Soccer Club (OK). Despite the outcome, both teams would advance to Phoenix, as Tulsa had punched its ticket via the National league. Florida Rush coach Nate Omodt kept this detail from his team to motivate them to advance to Nationals as regional champions. His plan worked, as Florida Rush beat TSC 2-1. Jean Rivaroli, the tournaments leading scorer with seven goals, found the net in the fifth minute for Rush. TSC battled back, and leveled in the forty-eighth. Adam Tran struck gold for Florida Rush when his ninetieth-minute strike found the back of the net, giving Rush the 2-1 victory.

Defending National Champion Alpharetta Ambush (GA) played all week with a target on its back. Every team played its best game against the Ambush, and finals day opponent Tulsa Soccer Club (OK) was certainly up to the challenge. After TSC gave up three goals in the first 15 minutes, Juan Peralta pulled one back when he scored in the thirty-fourth minute. Sean Kelley scored for Ambush five minutes later and the Georgia team took a 4-1 lead into halftime. The teams traded goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to give Ambush the 5-2 lead. TSC showed great character and fought back, scoring three unanswered goals by Milton Leopoldo, Omar Mata and Joshua Fuhrman to force overtime. The extra time belonged to the defending champs, as Jeffrey Degen added a goal to Karl Chesters’ overtime hat trick to complete the 9-5 victory for Ambush.

Cobb FC 92 Premier (GA) scored in the waning moments of the first half to take a 1-0 lead over the Dallas Texans 92 (TX-N) into the half. In the sixty-seventh minute, Brett Helm leveled the score. The teams battled back and forth until Ryan Ritter netted the game and tournament winning goal in the ninetieth minute. The Dallas Texans became the sixth North Texas team on the day to win a Region 3 Championship.

Ahh, a pleasant topic. The weather in Tennessee was wonderful! While there were storms here and there the temperature stayed in the mid to high 80's for most of the week. We did see one day of high 90's but who's complaining. The Texans thought they had died and gone to heaven as one parent commented that the temperature back home had reached 105 degrees.

Easy fix! A club of that size has enough $$$ to hire enough coaches to cover each team. 1 team - 1 coach, then you wouldn't have this problem. This isn't an RS problem, this is a club to cheap to offer full service.

There were plenty of coaches at all the game. It sounds like a parent didn't get the coach that HE wanted. The games were well supported by CESA and SCYSA staff.

Seems to me that a lot of coaches have more than one team, regardless of the club. I don't see that club $$$ would make much difference since they have to pay a coach for each team regardless of whether that coach is coaching one or more teams. It would also seem to me that having a coach for more than one team would actually reduce the cost to the parents, since travel costs for the coach could often be split between two teams.

I don't know RS, but it looks like he does a very good job coaching elite teams and producing results. Not all coaches are able to coach the top team, and certainly not able to produce like results. So, what's the club to do? Should they cut teams and players because they don't have enough coaches? Because I don't see how anyone thinks that there is this glut of coaches out there that isn't being tapped into. Seriously, one team/one coach? Just how is that really going to work?

Congratulations to all of the SC teams. You all deserve it. Good luck to Cesa 94. It's great to see SC represented in nationals!

quote) So, I'll take you at your word that this is stated CESA policy. I'll also suggest that any organization that doesn't leave room for common sense to alter policy, probably isn't very forward thinking or big-picture oriented or customer service guided. I'm sorry the alteration of policy didn't suit you.(quote from Harry)

If you've dealt with CESA for any length of time, you will know they are subject to change their policies or rules at any time, to suit them however they need to. And without notice. And if you happen to question a rule change or policy or procedure or if you have been told by a Director-
"CESA never has or never will" do something (but they have already done it), you will be met with arrogance and obstinence. Not really very good customer service, in my humble opinion.

It's simply the CESA way.

I think what they are saying is one coach for each premier team. Each age group has two to three teams from premier to classic. . A coach can't survive financially off one team but he can coach a classic , a challenge and a premier if the logistics works. Since CESA is the largest club in the state they are going to continually send several teams to regionals and will continue to face this problem.

I'm not sure that's what they were saying. What was said was, one coach/one team. I would ask you if you believe all coaches are equipped to coach all levels (I don't believe they are, nor do I believe all coaches want to coach the top team and do all that is expected and required of that coach). The clubs are going to choose coaches based on which ones they believe can bring success at all levels, with success at the top level being first priority. If they don't, having a conflict at Regionals is a moot point because the teams probably won't make it that far. Was this the first year RS had both of these teams? If not, has he done a good job coaching both up to this point? Did he have consistent conflicts throughout the year? If it wasn't a problem throughout the year, it's likely that up until that game most of the parents and players of both teams were happy he was the coach.

BTW, if I were a parent or player, I'd be at least as angry with the girls that decided not to come (and their parents). I don't know their circumstances, but the dates for Regionals are know at the time team commitments are made. If you are going to commit to any team you should be doing everything you can to be at the Regionals. The team did very well competing with 12 players, but how long can that be done when playing at this level?

There will be conflicts if a coach has more than one team, regardless of the level they are coaching. Maybe there will be no conflict at the Regionals, but there will be conflicts throughout the year. So, coaching at different levels doesn't make the conflicts disappear, although I would imagine many might be fine with the conflicts as long as they affect a lower team. The parents of the players on those teams might not feel the same. Personally, I would give credit to any coach who can coach a team and make it as far as both of these teams did. RS and the players did a great job and represented SC well. I understand there are upset parents. But, to take a thread where we should be celebrating the accomplishment of this team is a bit ridiculous. How about starting a new thread to discuss what should happen when a coach finds a conflict between teams and whether one coach/one team is even a possibility in the real world of club soccer.

I love how the "committment card" is always one sided. No, it is a 2-way street, or it should be.

If a coach is going to commit to a team, he/she needs to be there for his/her team. You people need to to stop blasting those that decided they had something else to do, just like RS decided he had something else to do when the 92 Girls had their most important game of their Club careers.

Would the outcome have been different, who knows? But if what DD says is true, RS should have been there!

The team didn't have enough players all year. They played with no subs last year at regionals. They didn't have enough players to finish the ECNL last year and struggled to put a competitive team on the field at all the tournaments this year.
They lost a lot of players over the past two years which can be contributed to their roster decisions starting four years ago. Choosing out of state players over local players and when they needed the local players this year they were gone. But thats a job for Captain Hindsight who was probably tied up with Senator Weiner.
Glad you can plan your life a year in advance MT4ME. And is easier to commit when you know what you are committing to.
Besides, as long is there is no forfeit, whats the diffence between a player missing a game and a coach missing a game.
Sure the parents mad everyone didn't show but that was par for the course all year.

RS is not one of my favorites, however, Congratulations to both he and his 94 team. What a great accomplishment. And a nice article about them in today's Greenville News.

And, very classy comments by Coach Shelley.

Good luck in Phoenix.

Thanks, Harry, I had almost forgotten that Sharpe had 2 or more years R3PLE experience as well as previous Southern Regional experience.

Exactly, you can always count on those 12 to leave it all on the field, and I applauded their accomplishments as they happened in this thread just as I applauded others. But, I disagree that fatigue was the biggest problem they had on day 4. The damage on day 4 was done long before fatigue even had a chance to take affect (down 0-2 at 12-15 mins) and may have been avoided had Shelley been there to analyze play and make adjustments early on to a creative lineup of starting positions and formation. Unfortunately, he wasn't.

Contrary to what some here think are my intentions, it's the admiration I have for what the team accomplished in the first 3 days as well as Shelley's accomplishments with and care for the team throughout a difficult year and my trust, albeit misplaced, in a longstanding club policy that leads me and others associated with the team to believe they deserved greater support in the form of Shelley's presence on day 4.

MT4ME, there were no previous conflicts between the two premier teams this year that I can recall.

the score really has nothing to do with it.
deltadog has a legit gripe. its too bad he didn't email the coach before all the $/time he comitted to the tourny & asked him directly, in case of conflict which team will you be coaching?...to confirm said club policy.
the cynic in me thinks that the coach/club decided that they had milked all the $ out of the older girls & that they still had to woo the younger boy$ back for another year.
no rip on cesa, don't know anything about them, just a thought on clubs in general maybe

The team played all year with 12 players all year? Seriously? And yes, to the best of my ability I would plan my life in advance to be sure that my child is at the regions should they qualify. That's the commitment I make to the other parents and the other players on the team. But, that's me. Illness, injuries, and family emergencies are one thing, but deciding not to go is another. Having 12 players at a league game is difficult, but it's difficult to win a tournament when playing day after day with only 12.

One thing I know we are committing to in June is the other players on the team.

Sandman, once my daughter was on the roster last summer, they could count on her for Regionals if the team made it. Had I asked your question and been told the policy had changed I would have expressed my concerns then. But, given the at-any-time-the-policies-can-change-to-suit, no-policy policy endorsed by Harry what would the answer to my question have meant? Anything? Nothing?

I really don't think the decision was about the money, and I do think the decision made was very difficult for Shelley. In the end I think it came down to total lack of "what if" preparation for a coaching conflict by those looking out for the '94 team resulting in the decision made impacting the '92 team who should have had priority.

But, take a look at conehead's question with a slight modification and one eye on Nationals. What would the boys team have said if RS had been called back to Greenville for a family emergency, and the boys lost?

I just read the day's postings from the time I was on this morning until now. DD, you just can't convince me that this would have been an issue at all had the 92s won like they did in the 2nd game. You said that you voiced your concern about not having Russell at that game and I guess we have to take your word for it. They won 1-0 and nobody would have ever known you were upset. The exact same circumstances with regards to coaching the team occured two days later with Russell being absent, only this time the team lost. Now, more than 72 hours later, you're still upset about it. What was different other than the score and your reaction? You-know-I'm-slow-in-understanding-so-break-it-down-for-me-again. (not sure what the hyphens were for)

What the heck are you talking about? You keep going on about the 2nd game and 4th game as if in some way beforehand they were considered even remotely similar in terms of what would be anticipated as required of the '92 girls and their coach. We knew going in that the 2nd game was the easiest game on the preliminary schedule and not only the best chance but a good chance for a win, the 3rd game would be the toughest making the 1st game critical to at least get a draw, but '92 team with Shelley coaching came out of the 1st game with a win and 3 points. Unlike the '94 boys who earned only 1 point in a 1st game draw. When Shelley explained to the '92 girls the situation about the boys before the 2nd game the girls obliged as I said. The 2nd game should have been a cakewalk compared to what we knew was to come in the 3rd game (GSA) and the possible 4th game (Ponte Vedra) if we finished 2nd in bracket.

We had profiles of both 1st and 2nd team's down to premier league records, tournament records, state cup records and record comparisons to previous years. Which had national team members, region 3 team members, state team members, in some cases track & field times, dominent foot, height, which team's had returning college players and their freshman stats even some youtube video; college committments, college coaches' NLI release blurbs and for some full player profiles... for games 1 and 2. No need for research on GSA or PVedra, because every player with our team had played both teams at least once, most of them twice and half of the team 5-6 times. And... the team's coach, Russ Shelley, had coached CESA '92 every game against the GSA and PVedra teams for 4 years.

At the hotel before the 4th game Shelley told the team he would be coaching the boys again. However, unlike 2 days earlier the entire team knowing how different this 4th game would be compared to the 2nd game followed him to his room and tried to talk him into changing his mind. That visit in itself should have been enough, but I am aware of at least 1 parent called him (still at hotel before the game) to get him to change his decision, and I texted my disagreement later after I realized he wasn't going to be at the game (I wasn't at meeting). The decision was challenged by the entire team after the meeting where it was announced at the hotel.

3rd game accomplishment with these 12 players under Shelley... dominated 1st half possesion, held GSA scoreless for 75 minutes finally losing 2-0 (had they held on for the tie, they would have finished 1st in bracket). Fall Premier League CESA/GSA score 1-6.

4th game accomplishment with these 12 players without Shelley... played 1st half in defensive half usually defensive 3rd, rarely controlling possesion, down 0-2 in 1st 15 minutes finally losing 0-8. Fall Premier League CESA/PVedra score 1-3 (0-2 @ half, Shelley fired up team for 2nd half 1-1). Oh, added value accomplishment... at least 4 players including three of the starting backs from the 3 previous games got experience at new starting positions.

72 hours? Ask me again in ten years and I'll still tell you that at the 2011 Southern Regionals the CESA '92 Premier Girls needed Shelley at the 4th game, went to him as a team asking him to be there, and he should have been there.

Does that finally break it down for you? Hope so.

the score really has nothing to do with it.
deltadog has a legit gripe. its too bad he didn't email the coach before all the $/time he comitted to the tourny & asked him directly, in case of conflict which team will you be coaching?...to confirm said club policy.
the cynic in me thinks that the coach/club decided that they had milked all the $ out of the older girls & that they still had to woo the younger boy$ back for another year.
no rip on cesa, don't know anything about them, just a thought on clubs in general maybe

Surely not, no a Club decide they have "milked all $$$", no, it could not be???????

Track and Field times??? Posting that rant at 4:02 am??? Edited at 4:59 am??? Talking about this 10 years from now???

Yes, that breaks it down for me. You're a little farther gone than even I thought you were. I'm going to wish you good luck with a thing the rest of us call 'coping' and leave you to it. I hope you're successful in getting Russell fired or bringing down the club or ultimately avenging your daughter for the lost respect of some kids in FL that aren't even friends of hers. Keep us updated.

Wow! This has gotten even sadder. The bitterness in some people is amazing and just never stops.

In another attempt to derail the hijacking:

* It's incredible to get to regionals (congrats to all 10 SC teams who won the state championship: CESA 96B, CESA 95B, CESA 94B, CESA 93B, CESA92B, SCUMP 96G, CESA 95G, CESA 94G, CESA93G, CESA 92G)

* It's amazing to get out of group play (congrats to CESA 95B, CESA 94B, CESA 93B, CESA92B, SCUMP 96G, CESA93G, CESA 92G )

* It's unreal to move to the semis and finals (congrats to the CESA 94B, CESA 93B)

* And it's absolutely brilliant to have won RIII (congrats to the CESA 94B!)

Yes. Of the 30 or so games played they averaged 1 to 2 subs in 70% of the games. The three or four who did not attend regionals didn't just wake up and say we aren't going. Injuries and other committments where the reasons. Oh and yes I would committ to next year in June since its in Greenville.
Its really just a 92 thing. I don't see any shortage of players in the other age groups this year. By not being able to create a challenge team last year created issues.
I also have no beef with the coach doing what he did. Its was a lose-lose situation.

Isn't this a pretty common thing for u18's and graduated seniors? The u18 Academy team for my sons Academy club has had practices in the last couple of weeks where 4-5 kids showed up. I have friends whose daughters played on Charlotte teams that were yearly State Cup winners and regional participants...and at u18 they went to regions with 10 kids or 11 kids.

I don't think there is anything unique about the 92 CESA girls situation. It happens. Instead of people/parents showing up desperate to win....how about you take it as one last chance to enjoy each others company before moving on to college?

Life is never a walk in the park, or at least not for long. Usually there are conflicts and being able to manage those conflicts is what life is about. And part of managing conflict is understanding that you don't always get your own way.

Lets be honest here. The 92 girls have always been a good solid regional team....but the 94 boys have always been an outstanding regional team with chances to compete at a national level. The 92 girls are done. The 94 boys still have a couple of years. The 94 boys have a punchers shot at making a run at nationals. The 92 girls, with or without RS, have never ever given any indication that they could compete at that level.

When forced into a no win choice, I don't see how anyone could reasonably argue that the coach and the club made the only choice that made sense. Doesn't have anything to do with soaking more money out of folks.

I think what the 92 girls accomplished was remarkable and they should remember this for a long time, given their short roster. Don't ruin things.......by fixating on choices forced on people. RS loses either way, right? I doubt he was happy having to choose and I doubt he was happy with how things worked out for the girls. Just let it go and relax folks.

yep, 4:02 and 4:59. after finishing remote third shift programming on my customers' systems. nope, wouldn't even be talking about it now if you didn't keep coming back asking about it. Why would anyone ever want to get Russell fired? His score this year against PV was 1-3, not 0-8. What do you think the team was trying to avoid?

Dog, didn't Shelley use to take a vacation every year the week prior to State Cup? The most important week of practice, he is off on vacation.

2 out of 3 of these years the 92's lost the State Cup.

What kind of committment is that?

This is ridiculous slamming Russell for this. First off, He has another job at Christ Church Episcopal School that requires him to go on an 8th grade field trip every year at this time. He's gone for the last ten years.
Secondly, He's missed the opening round of State Cup of the '94 Boys for the last 2 years. This year he was in Raleigh with his girls at an ECNL event rather than coaching State Cup.
Instead of bashing a great coach, how about we celebrate the accomplishments of a group of kids from South Carolina who are going to represent South Carolina at Nationals.

Cajunkid, Shelley's had the '92 team 4 years and they've won state cup the last 2 years. I don't recall him taking a vacation around that time, but sometime around there maybe Thanksgiving or before Christmas he has an annual trip to Florida he has to take with his students from Christ Church. The first 2 years he had the '92 girls his '94 boys were at the Thanksgiving installment of Disney Tournament.

The school trip may have been what you're referring to, but if so that was part of his job at CCES not a vacation. At least that was my understanding. As far as the cup losses go, except for the year AH played up and knocked the '92 team out of their possible first trip to Regionals and one year that SCUFC made finals, from u-11 thru u-18 the '92 group at cup was always a heated almost coin-flip battle between '92 Bridge and '92 CESA.

MT4ME, I stand corrected. Apparently there was a conflict earlier this year between the 2 premier teams.

If the guy is missing so many important games for his teams, to coach his other teams, he is coaching too many teams. These parents pay too much money to get short-changed in important events and the players deserve to have their coach.

Maybe he chooses to coaach many teams to pad his pocket or maybe the Club is making him do it.

Is this not the same age group that had huge numbers defect, many long time premier players included, from the club starting in prior years under Shelly's watch? I wonder why if RS is such a swell guy/coach? The CESA apologist will get on here and once again slam those disgruntled and disloyal parents from that age group and try to give the impression that they are the exception, but there seems to be more controversy than most with this group and the common thread is RS.

The '92 group did have a large exit last year, but controversy associated with the '92 group began long before RS became the coach. If he were not as respected by and cared for by the 12 that went to Regionals there would not have been the pre-game objection to his not coaching what became the team's last game.

By the end of group play this group of 12 had achieved as much success at Regionals as any CESA girls team ('90-'95) had achieved for at least the last 4 years. My thought is that he should have been with '92 team, even though I know he was between a rock and a hard place. However, that doesn't mean I don't respect what RS did for the team and my daughter over the last 4 years. I doubt my daughter would have gotten the opportunity to return to the team had RS not taken it over.

As for the departure of players from previous Premier and Challenge teams, let's say I fully understand the sentiment of those players and parents. That said, I believe the players added to this year's roster proved they were quite capable of filling those vacated positions, and further that those players proved they could/should have been on the roster all along. Any other absences of players from Regionals, in my opinion, seemed to serve more as incentive to the 12 that attended. While there, the 12 were more focused on competing and winning than complaining about the players that didn't finish the run.

As for "defections" in general, I heard that after 3 players sustained injuries the u-16's played their last game with only 11. I may be corrected by someone closer to that team, but my understanding is they only took 14 because 4 players left the team after State Cup. There may a common thread associated with "defections" to be discussed elsewhere, but I don't think the common thread is RS.

(edit... the last paragraph refers to the u-16 girls not boys.)

RS has coached this team for 4 years. So, someone(s) has to be responsible for the defections with this group.

Probably can't point the finger just at him, but he is the Head Coach...

Are the U16 girls coached by AH? And 4 players left after State Cup??? Bet that went over well. What is the story?

Wow, after having read all of that I am amazed at some of you people. Just remember that soccer is a game.....no matter what happens, it is still just a game. No more, no less.

If you are going to argue a point, at least get factual information to back up your side.....
