It looks like tryouts begin next weekend. I can't find information on coaches assigned to each age group. Nor can I find information about the practice dates. It seems to me I saw one date a month that SCYSA wouldn't play league games to allow for attendance at ODP practice, but I don't see it anywhere now. I would think, if there is really going to be 15 practices for each team, there would need to be at least one or two scheduled per month through June. Will the teams really get in 15 practices? I just don't see how that happens. The cost for training has gone up significantly, and the only way to justify that cost is to actually have practices a number of the players can attend. Part of me doesn't want to give up on ODP in SC, but the practical part questions the value for the money put out. All this in a year where they are talking about reducing the cost of ODP. Am I alone or does anyone else wonder just how they reduced the cost of the program?

The entire ODP tryout/sub-region/region/camp charade is an excuse to put together somewhat competitive environments for those players ALREADY VIRTUALLY SELECTED to be selected again.
For the overwhelming percentage who AREN'T held over, it's an SCYSA fundraiser. It's not a pure waste of money. It's just money that MIGHT be better spent on something else.

Did anyone notice that one of the coaches is a DOC for a GA club?

I'm shocked.

I assume he's somebody's friend.

I don't like having club coaches as the head coach of an age group. There are too many conflicts of interest for them, even if they go at it with the best of intentions. The look of this year's tryout process, coaches, etc seems to be a mess. Sometimes the "fix" is worse than the original problem...

I think the point is, practically speaking, nothing has REALLY changed. Changes have been primarily cosmetic. Except for one: More players and parents are catching on that ODP may not be the best option available.
(And that was kind.)

so, what is the best option? ecnl came to town and cesa got in. so you have to play for cesa to play ecnl. well if you are from another part of the state, that the ecnl wonks didn't pick, how do you do that?

Tell me roughly where you are, and I'll try to give you some possibilities.

I can't believe college coaches are only going to be at ECNL games and tournaments. I would think that non-ECNL clubs with high level teams will find more and more ways to expose their players so they risk losing them to an ECNL team. SCU/MP and SC United have some very talented teams. College coaches are going to want to see the players on those and other teams. No matter what happens with ECNL, college coaches are still going to be at Disney, CASL, Jefferson Cup, Premier League games, etc. ODP may also have a place for some players, but probably not the majority.

A letter that went out yesterday:

Colleagues,

A new and promising soccer season has started across our great state. With the start of that season our players all have hopes, dreams and aspirations of playing at the highest levels that are offered to them. South Carolina Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) offers that opportunity for many of our players. To better serve our membership and to offer the ODP experience to those player that have never been offered the chance to participate in this wonderful program there will now be tryouts and evaluations held across the state more frequently.

As Directors of Coaching and coaches for your respective clubs we ask that you provide the information below to your players and families and encourage them to participate in the tryout/evaluation dates. If you have any questions please contact ODP Administrator Chaz Ballish Regueiro cballishregueiro@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you on the soccer field.

So how is this going to work, are the ODP coaches coming to each club to evaluate and select pool players? Or are they depending on the club coaches to submit names for pool teams based upon who registers and shows? Just curious.
