I attended last night's R3PL East match between Discoveries 95 Green (boys) and SC United Elite and have never been prouder to be a part of SC youth soccer.

As many of you may know, DSC 95 Green lost one of its players, Clifton Carter, last month in a tragic accident that has devistated the local soccer community. Last night's game was DSC's first game since Clifton's passing and was a very emotional game for the team and the literally hundreds of supporters in attendance.

Prior to the game, both teams lined up at mid field to honor Clifton and recognize his parents. SCU coach Dick Hiller presented the Carters with a special SCU game jersey that displayed SCU and DSC club crests as well as a donation to the DSC scholarship fund in Clifton's name. Coach Hiller's presentation was a display of unity and sportsmanship for which the entire SC United family should be very proud. Absolutely the highest level of class and sportsmanship. Well done SCU!

As for the match, DSC eventually won 2-1 in an understandibly emotional game, however both teams (and parents/fans)deserve to be commended for their display of sportsmanship and unity.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the officials assigned to this match. I've never seen a crowd this large for a club soccer match. It was a tremendous atmosphere. Both teams were very good last night. The fans deserved a good game.....and they were rewarded.

When 95% of your job is to stay level with the second-to-the-last defender, or the ball, which ever is closest to the end line, you really don't get the opportunity to absorb the specifics of a match.

posted FOR Niel Welborn. Soccerluv2 is not the handle of Niel Welborn.

Dear All:

Please know that I intend to contact Ron Tryon of South Carolina United FC personally but if anyone could pass this note to him, we would certainly appreciate the effort. I do not have any contact information for Ron.

We in Rock Hill have never experienced such a display of good sportsmanship as that displayed by the U16 R3PL team from South Carolina United FC. Friday night South Carolina United FC played in a special jersey honoring Clifton Carter's memory and Coach Dick Hiller presented a check and jersey to Clifton's parents, Mark and Mandy Carter. The donation is for the Clifton Carter Scholarship Fund. At the direction of Mark and Mandy, these moneys will be used to help girls and boys, that deserve financial assistance, to play club soccer.

To all the parents, players, coaches, especially Michael Shealy (Team Manager Shealy also attended the memorial services for Clifton) a special thank-you for Coach Hiller's and South Carolina United FC's kind gesture. The entire Discoveries Soccer Club Nation and the York County soccer community was so overwhelmed.

It is our privilege to be a part of SCYSA and to know what a loving and caring family SCYSA truly is becoming. What a great evening it was with an estimated crowd of over 500 in attendance to watch the brilliant play of two (2) of the top R3PL teams.

To simply put it, at the end of the day this is only a game being played by a bunch of young women and men who just want to have fun.

Niel Welborn
President of Discoveries Soccer Club

Special thanks to Coach Hiller and SC United 95 Boys Elite who represented us (SC United) at the highest level. It's a great example of how the game extends beyond the soccer field. Coach Hiller set a fine example. Continued prayers for the Carters and Discoveries soccer family.
