Must have been for Denial of an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity (DOGSO).

Good call, ref!

Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.

I would have done the same thing! No way a 7 year old should be sent off!!

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what the 7 year old did. Short of a WWE move I'd have to scratch my head too...

There really isn't enough info for me to say whether I think Becks' action was justified.

7-year-old's are old enough to understand basic elements of rules and consequences. If the kid made some kind of blatantly dangerous play, then I would say the ref's decision was right in line.

i have no problem with beckham, sr getting tossed but a red card for a 7 year old is way over the top.

The article says that Beckham got a red card, not the kid. It doesn't specify if the kid got a yellow or red, just that he was sent off as a result of it (which would have been the result of either card anyway).

Having any cards for 7 year olds is already over the top. Telling a ref that they shouldn't card a 7 year old is correct and worthy of getting tossed yourself. The coach probably should have gotten himself/herself tossed as well

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that point... cards for some things, sure. Years ago, I was playing a match and got a yellow for "delay of game" because the ref said I stepped off of my line too quickly (I was a GK and the other team was given an indirect kick on edge of the 6-yard box). Something like that given to a 7-year-old, yeah... ridiculous. A 7-year-old will have trouble grasping what he/she has done.

On the other hand...what if a 7-year-old gets mad and hits another kid on the field? Blatant two-arms-extended shove? Dropped profanity (yes, I've heard it from 7-year-olds)?

Give the kid a yellow, let his/her coach talk to them and explain what the penalty was, and put them back out on the field. 7-year-olds aren't stupid - they are capable of understanding basic notions of having consequences to their actions.

However, we weren't given any details on what actually happened in this case, so I'm just going to have to remain undecided about whether Beckham was justified in my opinion.
