The Bishop’s School boys soccer team reached the Division IV quarterfinals, but the Knights needed two days to get there.

Crawford and host Bishop’s began their first-round match on Tuesday, playing to a 2-2 tie in regulation. After 15 scoreless minutes of golden-goal overtime, each team took its standard five penalty kicks. Still tied.

After 17 sudden-death penalty kicks apiece, the teams were still tied when darkness prevented going any further.

Crawford and Bishop’s returned to the field Wednesday, with the Knights finally prevailing in the 26th round of penalty kicks — 52 PKs in all.

Bishop’s coach Malcolm Tovey praised goalkeeper Christian Guinchard for making key saves in the later rounds of PKs. Matt Harris scored the game-winner.

“Never in more than 30 years of coaching have I seen anything like this,” said Tovey, whose Knights will play Mater Dei Catholic in the quarterfinals Friday.

The playoff appearance capped a successful year for Crawford, which finished second in the Central League.

“Crawford is a very good team, and very good sports,” Tovey said. “They played with class.”
