Were you at the game?. Ever watch paint dry well it was dry before half. If you look, a lot of teams have scores of 10 +. We try to stop scoring at 10. What do you tell a player that only plays in these types games? Ok I'm finally putting you in but oh yea you can't score. 98% of scoring is done by these players after 10. And even then it usually stops at 12 if you look back at our scores. Believe me we wish our region was stronger so we did not have to play keep away 70 minutes of the game. Our region changes a little next year and it will help. We have some coach's tell us to keep playing and not play keep away. A couple years ago we racked up almost 20, but the other coach told us to please keep playing hard that that was the only way his girls was going to get better. And yes it is important to these kids to see their names in the paper, on this board, and in the news if we can ever get a news station to cover girls soccer. Our coach is first class and if you ask any team we play I'm sure they will back that up. So, sorry if you were looking for an apology !

No apology would ever be expected.
This subject has been on this board many times and the consensus is that 6-8 goals shows your dominance. Yes it is not a good match when teams are overmatched.
Again, no apology expected.

Why is it that people assume that the reason for a high score is simply to "show dominance"?
Same player scores 8-10 goals? Pointless and crass.
8 different players score goals, including those who have not gotten a chance to get into a game in who-knows-when, much less take a shot under some kind of pressure? Player development.
Players score goals but only off crosses and headers, back passes to midfielders, playing with short numbers simulating a card or two, etc.? Team development.
Realizing the other team has put in restrictions/taken out starters/tried to make it somewhat competitive and it's YOUR job to step up and try to give them as good a game as possible? Character development.
I've got good news and bad news...

Northwestern 15 Gaffney 0
Played the entire second half with 8 players on the field, limited touch restriction with young players in various positions. Credit to Gaffney they never stopped playing and were in positive spirits at the end of the match.

Ouch!! Yes it is going to be a long season for the girls here at Gaffney. The new coach doesn't have a lot to work with. Really need a couple of good athletes to come out and give them a little boost. Was tough to watch the game vs Clover the other night as they played keep away and attempted only one shot in the second half.

If these dominant teams played 1 touch soccer for the entire game, it would not only keep down the score but would actually improve them as a team. I have not seen high school teams that could keep possesion, work the ball up the field and get players in position to score playing 1 touch. The domninant teams do not have to stop playing and and can continue to try and score. And they will have improved their soccer game for the playoffs and/or for more competitive games

OK ghs26, Since you have had to suffer through the blow out and the keepaway game within a few days of each other please give your feeling on which was a better experience for your girls. If the word "better" can be used, what I mean is which do you think gave them somthing to build on? I have always thought the keepaway things was more like being made fun of, but I am interested to see what you might think having seen them back to back.

Chief, I did not see the game last night. The Clover game was at home and last night was at NW. I am actually with the boy's team so I cannot speak on which was better. But having watched the Clover game, they would break away from close to midfield and dribble into the box, stop, and bring it back out. I would imagine that was a little more dis-heartning than last nights game with touch restricitons. But the coach here will keep those girls fighting and working hard til the final whistle Im sure!

I feel Hanna high's pain. If not for the viking cup and a couple of out of conference games they have no competitive games. Even with realignment next year they only add Mann. Keep away IS degrading and so is 15-0. Catch 22.I'm amazed at how some schools continue to carry soccer. Is it a law. I thought thats why they invented lacrosse so the un-athletic people could play sports.

Here's how you could fix it. Throw the school classifications out in high school soccer. Have a couple high school power leagues based on the previous years performance. Every game would be interesting for the power leagues, and every game would be competitive for the lower leagues. 2a Christ Church has knocked off Eastside 3a, Riverside 4a, Mauldin 4a and one of those teams south of Charlotte that's not to bad of a team, I think their a 3a team also. This would eliminate blowouts most of the time.

Yes, one of my personal distastes! I guess we have football to blame for this playoff crap. Thanks Coach Bentley!

So we no longer care to teach and show a little sportsmanship and class.
Is it now, "it's all about me, let me get mine", I need to see my name in the paper???
6-0, 8-0, that's a solid victory, let's teach team, not personal stats.
We can have a decided victory without running it up.

I don't think you have been to any of these games. Some of these teams would be at 8-0 in 8 minutes or less. Playing keep away for 70 minutes is dangerous for the players. The losing team ends up embarrast and start tackling late through elbows and just kicking at your feet. Ask any player on either side and I bet you they tell you they would rather just play. And yes stats is why you play the game. Those kids should be taught to win and want to win.

I have seen plenty of lopsided games. The coach after a 6-0 lead would have the players only use their weaker foot, or be required to have a certain number of touches before shooting, things like this to enhance their skills.
This coach did not see the value of putting 10, 15 or whatever... on the opponents.
As for learning how to win, this team won 3 State Championships.

Sorry.5-0 in soccer is a beat down. Its like getting beat by 20 in basketball. It would have been close if we had made our shots. No kidding

The moral of the story here is never judge a team based on the record they have in early season/non-region games. Once region play starts you will get some idea of how good the teams really are. Of course for some teams the region play may still not tell how good they may (or may not) be. In this case putting Clovers opponents against Lancasters results in seeing a world of difference in the quality of competition they have faced.

I would have to say that Lancaster has beaten some formidable opponents this year. An example would be Fort Mill High in a scrimmage. It can, actually, be smart in the long run to play teams that you can beat outside of region play because each region has its own rules for tie breakers. Lancaster has made the play-offs in the past ahead of other schools because of their overall record. Even though, they had split games with schools in their region. If the goal is to make the playoffs, this is a good thing to do. Playing a tough out of region schedule to prepare for the play-offs could quite possibly keep a team from making the play-offs. By the way, don't take the Bruins for granted, they have some very good players!

Not to nit pick but I would not hang my hat on a scrimmage for claiming quality play. The first scrimage of the season would be of little value in judging weather or not a team is "formidable". I would hope that the tie breakers would be pretty deep in region results before they would reward a team who played lesser competion so they could have a better record but I guess not based on your statement. Lancaster does have some very good players and I would have to agree they should not be taken for granted, which it seems Clover did not do.

If I am correct, tournament games do not come into play with a tie breaker, only regular season games. So, to get good competition playing in tournaments can be a way to prepare for the post season. To maintain play-off eligibility, playing teams you can beat gives you a good record. Tie breakers with goals for or goals against, etc. can lead to teams running the score up. At the college level, teams who have lost mostly conference games and won all nonconference games can be ranked ahead of teams that in conference play are ahead of them because of this. Bottom line is 8-1 is still 8-1...I believe thats why some high school teams are ranked above others because of wins / losses. (Record) Although, I could be wrong.

I think the point whatever was making is 9-1 looks good until you see that 6 of the 9 have a combined total of 0 wins. The first team with more than a pair of wins they run into made them look not so good as a 9-1 record might suggest. They have a few more game coming up in the next 2 weeks where they will play teams with a few wins that will give them a chance to prove or disprove the 9-1 record.
