Posting this in both varsity and jv forum to get a clear answer.

At the end of regulation of a JV match, how does it end? I've always been under the impression it ends in a tie. Had officials tell me tonight that this year it goes to two 5 minute halves followed by PK's if necessary.
Can someone clear this up for me...thanks!

That is correct. We are becoming well versed in the topic of overtime and PK's. Tonight was our third game in a week that has gone to PK's.

My understanding is that JV games go to OT/PKs if it does not interfere with the start time of the Varsity match.

A bit ambiguous in the wording, but the "no game may end in a tie" rule is enforced for varsity only for the purposes of playoff seeding. NFHS rules actually specify "Regular season games that are tied at the end of 80 minutes of play may be resolved by procedures adopted by state high school associations"--which would point toward varsity only because the previous paragraph recommends 60-minute games for JV/middle school levels.

State policy has always been that a JV match may be resolved using OT/kicks from the mark as long as it does not interfere with the timely start of a varsity match to follow, but JV matches are allowed to end in ties as there is no win/loss record to apply to playoff seeding. Tim, I think you posted a 4-4 tie vs. Battery Creek this season...was that the rationale in that case?

Sometimes it depends on the officiating crew and how quickly they want to get home.

It would be a great benefit to the new JV coaches to have a clear ruling on this topic. I have had about 10 draws since '07 all end at regulation, that is how I understand the ruling as it has been applied this year and years past.

At the Upstate rules meeting they indicated a shift from years past, from only doing OT/PK's if time allowed to trying to have winners in each JV match. This was to clear up different practices in different parts of the state.

We left one early non-region match a tie by mutual consent, and I think both coaches CAN consent to leaving it a tie at the end of regulation -- but if either coach requests, then it's OT/PK's.
