Can anyone tell me if there is any truth in Airport's varsity team literally "throwing" a ball in their own goal at the end of their match against Chapin??

I never knew a four seed in the region was such a prized possession!

Boiling Springs was down a few players due to a field Trip, but the girls that were there gave us all we could handle. Good playing on their part.

How does throwing a ball in your own goal help get a 4th seed? What are the details?

Well Chapin and Airport were vying for 3rd and 4th spot in region...if Aiport won their first round game v Camden they would play Berkley or beach school in 2nd round instead of playing HILTON HEAD who is predicted to win state...that way have a chance to get to lower state instead of possibly losing in 2nd round...that is possibly why wanted 4th seed but only Airport can answer that question i guess....

Are you saying a referee actually awarded a goal (an own goal in this case) directly off a throw-in, or that Airport just tried to score an own goal direct of a throw-in?

you're kinda right. I was there watching my cousin whose a freshman and if I didn't see it would've never believed it. the coaches yelled for them to throw it in their own goal. it was ridiculous. our fans over there said they had told a player to score an own goal, but she wouldn't do it, then the gk kinda helped it in. something about not playing hilton head, but seems like bad sportsmanship to me and certainly not the lessons to teach young people.

First time I'd been back to Chapin since I'd graduated too. I will say Chapin is young though, no seniors! Gonna be good in a year or two.

So, own goal by the keeper. I wondered, you can't score direct off a throw-in. No, not a lesson I'd expect to see taught.

This cannot be true. I have never met a coach at any level in any sport that would tell a team to intentionally lose a match - for any reason.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you have a stupid person running the high school league. Why are all playoff teams not seeded???? It happens at the lower levels. It happens in football. It is crazy. Reseed everyone, then play. It would eliminate the need to "finish in a certain place in the region" to get a better playoff matchup in the first and second round.

I don't know any more than what read here, but looking at their schedules it seems the two teams could still end the season tied for third with Chapin winning head to head tiebreaker either on goal differential or on earning a shutout in the first meeting. Or would Chapin winning a tiebreaker really be considered losing a tiebreaker? Gets a little confusing.

A throw into an opponents goal without touching anyone results in a goal kick.

A thrown into your own goal without touching anyone results in a corner kick.

If the airport coaching staff really instructed their keeper to score on herself they should be ashamed and face punishment from their athletic dept and school. This is high school-teach some dang sportsmanship not how to bend the rules to make a bracket work in your favor. You want to avoid Hilto n Head? I hope your first round opponent ends your season in round 1!

Let me clarify. It was not on a throw in. We had a "shot" and the keeper picked up the ball and threw it into the net under the encouragement of her coaching staff. This was with about a minute left in the game. I don't fully undertand it. But that is how it happened. It was a really good game, just a bizarre occurance at the end.

That might be even worse! Your coaching staff instructed the keeper to throw the ball in the goal!????!! That is absolutely terrible! But hey, what goes around, comes around. Terrible sportsmanship and skirting the system that is in place!

Ok let me chime in because there have been a few inaccuracies. First, Airport did not lose the match let alone lose on purpose, the final was 2-1 in favor of Airport. The game was in hand with AHS being up 2 nil with 1 minute left. The goalkeeper allowed the goal at the end, yes that part is accurate. This was not done to "secure" the 4th seed, a win over Chapin, Flora, and BC to end the season actually would have meant a 2 seed for the girls. The goal was merely for tiebreaker purposes in the event the girls did not win out.

Airport lost to ACF in pk's, if Coach Morris was so adamant about getting the 4th seed then I don't think this match would have headed into the 6th penalty kick. Coach tries to win every match, just like he should but again, the only thing he lost against Chapin was a tiebreaker. If he wanted to guarantee a 4 seed he would have just lost to Chapin in the first place.

Everyone's goal is to make it to the state championship game and if there is a strong possibility of a tie within the region, you obviously have to look at the path to State. A lot of times the 3 or 4 in our region is better than a 2. The administration and Athletic Directer are very aware of the situation, it was something that Coach Morris brought to them himself. This was a tactical move, one that was not meant to degrade another team, the goal given was in the final minute. Is this really different than clearing your bench and not caring if you get scored on? You can disagree if you want, that is your prerogative as a coach, parent, fan, but this is not the first time this has been done in high school sports. Just recently Dutch Fork baseball threw a game so they wouldn't have to meet Lexington early in the playoffs. I would link the thread but it was deleted off scvarsity. Whether it is right or wrong is your opinion and your opinion only.

That being said, 3A and 4A should go to a seeding system similar to 1A and 2A, that is the bottom line. As for Coach Morris-he is very respected in the girls soccer community and has been very successful at Airport High School, he is not a cheater and he doesn't "bend rules" so no need to turn this situation into anything more than it is.

No problem here. Sound like a coach who is paying attention. Get off your high horses everyone. You have to work with the current system until its fixed. There was a year we got screwed on seeding because we only scored 9 on Berea instead of 10 like the other team did. How messed up is that.

Seeding?

Who is going to do it? The same type of committee's that choose all-state and all-star teams? Like that's a perfect system and there is never any controversy there?

I'm not sure what the answer is?

How is this "cheating"? The only team it hurts in the team that did it in the long run...but maybe not. If it makes it so they have a better chance of making it further in the playoffs, why not do it? This is real life people...you can't tell me that if you had two choices to go from A to D, and there wasn't a good chance of A-B working, but A-C might work...you would do the A-C route every time if you come out ahead.

In my opinion (which that and .50 will still get you a coke out of the machine), the coaching staff needs no defense in this situation. If you are a coach and look at Airports situation, you would jockey your team for the same situation. If you have no chance of winning the region, then why not do what is best for your team, and for your athletic department finances. The way I see it, going to Camden (close), Bluffton (far), BC (close) - based on most likely scenario, is far better than any other situation in the bracket (not to mention other reasons too!). Having been in that region before and returning next year, I remember one year we had to go to Bluffton in the first round, then Hilton head in the 3rd...cost our program $1300-$1400 in mileage (in a program that is very poor anyway). I might have managed the game a little differently. However, I believe the coaches were not looking at the way it was perceived, but simply providing their team the best strategy in a complete picture...congrats to the lady eagles and BC for another stellar year! Those ladies play well!

Some of the posts in this thread show cause for more moderation of this board. Baseless accusations are flying all over the place with someone heard this and someone said that with ZERO proof of what was actually said. I find it interesting that Airport's coach chose the high road and stayed out of the discussion all together. Only he knows the truth and can testify to it.

We have freedom of speech, but maybe some responsibility should be exercised with it.

Now...I'll await the usual attacks via sarcastic remarks in 3...2...1

Friend,

Is there any doubt about something strange happenning here? If a ball was not intentionally "tossed" into a net, and I was being accused of manufacturing it, I'd be all over these boards defending myself!

There is always doubt.

Again, until the coach says exactly what happened, we really don't have the full story, do we.

Maybe the coach doesn't feel the need to defend himself on a message board. What would be the point?

let's pretend that he came on here and explained the story. The sharks would be all over him about that's not what really happened, you're lying, you're a this and that kind of coach, etc. Nothing would be done about the comments and everyone knows that if you post something on the internet, it's permanent.

So, again, what good would it serve for him to explain his actions assuming the outcomes of the reactions?

I'm not asking him to come on here and defend himself, I would stay clear of these boards as well.

But to say that we can't jump to any conclusions is just not right. We've had confirmation from more than one source that something out of the norm went down here. How big a deal it is, or whether it was morally right or wrong.....I'm not going to judge.

But something happened. Tree did fall in the woods. Someone was there. It made a sound.

Now, let's just move on and talk about the playoffs.

I'll say this and then be done...jumping to the wrong conclusions is never right.

BTW, I thought this thread DID have something to do with the playoffs
