MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team hosts No. 1 Maryland at Patriots Point on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., and the Cougars are expecting an astounding crowd to show up and show support.

“This will be a tremendous event, not only for our soccer program but for the College of Charleston,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “Maryland has been a prominent program in college soccer year in and year out and we are excited to host them in Charleston. Our goal is to have over 3,500 fans attend, so we need every Cougar fan out to create a raucous atmosphere and support our team.”

Over 1,750 advance tickets have already been presold for the match and the coaches and athletic staff are aiming to shatter the attendance record at the facility. That mark currently sits at 2,931 which was set on Sunday, Aug. 28 when the Cougars beat then-ranked No. 15 South Carolina 3-2 in front of an extremely spirited fan base.

CofC athletic staff and Public Safety officials encourage fans to arrive early to ensure a seat at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex. The box office will open at 6 p.m.

Adult tickets are available for purchase for $10 and youth tickets for $3 for fans under the age of 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at CofCSports.com or by phone at (843) 953-COFC (2362).

Admission is free to all current CofC students and free-ride buses will be leaving from the Stern Center beginning at 6 p.m. and cycling back-and-forth throughout the match.

Several tee-shirts and scarves will be distributed before and during the match.

Patriots Point continues to develop its reputation for being an imposing environment for CofC’s opponents as well as a first-class venue for watching quality soccer. Last season, CofC ranked 24th in national attendance average and was one of 26 schools nationally to average over 1,000 spectators per match.

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – No. 1 Maryland required a late goal to escape with a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston men’s soccer team in front of 2,230 fans at Patriots Point on Saturday night. The Cougars held the lead on two separate occasions but Maryland’s two second-half goals were the difference in the match.

The Cougars, having now played six teams either ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA / Continental Tire Coaches Poll, fall to 4-6-0 on the year.

Sean de Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) and Francis Twohig (St. Simon’s Island, Ga.) both netted their second goals of the season for the Cougars, but Maryland converted headers in the box three times to eke out the win.

“I’m real proud of my players; they stepped up tonight,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “We felt confident; the boys still feel confident. We knew we could play with them. I’ve got a good team and we showed it. The confidence was present before the game; during the game; at half time; through the second half. They just knocked theirs in and we didn’t finish our chances in the second half; we had some great chances.

“It was a great game. What a great place this is and what a great crowd it was. It was tremendous. We want to win those games though. I’m not taking satisfaction from playing them tough. I want to beat Maryland and I want to beat them all. Failure just means we’re going to work harder and get after it more.”

The Cougars came out strong in the early going and produced the first quality chances of the match and forced the Terrapins on their heels during the early stages.

CofC broke first in the 19th minute when Sam Redmond (Asheville, N.C.) played a through ball to Luke Huggett (Brighton, England) at the top-right corner of the box. With his first touch, Huggett centered the ball for de Silva who drove the ball off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

In the 33rd minute, Tsubasa Endoh sent in a corner kick and Landon Woodberry got his head to it and sent the ball into the far-side of the goal to equalize the match.

CofC’s raucous fans were not deterred and stayed behind the Cougars and Francis Twohig (St. Simon’s Island, Ga.) rewarded them in the dying minutes of the first period. He collected a misplayed clearance in the box and as Maryland goalkeeper Keith Cardona charged him, he casually chipped the ball over his head and into the back of the net to put CofC up, 2-1, in the 43rd minute.

The Cougars carried the lead into the locker room after outshooting the Terps, 6-3, in the opening period.

The second half became increasingly more physical and called for eight more fouls than the opening period did.

Maryland netted its second equalizer in the 66th minute when Taylor Kemp sent a ball into the box from the left side and David Kabelik redirected it into the net with his header.

The decisive goal came in the 84th minute and once again on a set-piece header. Kemp again stood over the ball and sent it across the goal mouth and Woodberry slid the ball into a sliver of space between the post and CofC keeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland).

Heemskerk made two saves on the evening, both on well-driven balls through a crowded box.

The Cougars face another tough opponent with heightened importance as they now set their sights on the Southern Conference season and their opener with No. 25 Furman. The Cougars and Paladins kickoff from Greenville, S.C., at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

No. 21 Furman Hosts College Of Charleston In Tuesday SoCon Opener

Greenville S.C. – The 21st-ranked Furman men’s soccer team kicks off its Southern Conference schedule on Tuesday when it hosts College of Charleston in a 7 p.m. match at Stone Stadium.

The Paladins enter the match at 7-1-2 after salvaging a 1-1 draw versus East Tennessee State on Thursday night at home. Trailing 1-0 in the final minute of regulation, Tyler Peoples headed in a Coleton Henning flick on after a desperation long ball from goalkeeper Doug Ryan to earn the Paladins a tie. Junior Martin Ontiveros leads Furman through 10 matches with six goals and five assists while Henning, Peoples and Walker Zimmerman have each tallied four goals.

Tuesday’s match marks the 31st all-time meeting between the Paladins and Cougars with Furman holding a 17-9-4 series advantage. The SoCon rivals played to a 2-2 draw at Charleston during the 2011 regular season before Furman claimed a 2-1 triumph over the Cougars in Greenville in the opening round of last season’s SoCon Tournament.

College of Charleston is 4-6-0 on the season following a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to top-ranked Maryland at Patriots last weekend.

Tickets for Tuesday night’s clash are $4 for adults and $2 for children. Furman students receive free admission with a valid student ID.

Fans can follow live statistics and live streaming video for the match by logging onto www.FurmanPaladins.com and can access live updates via Twitter by following @FurmanPaladins and @FurmanSoccer.

Sean de Silva scored 27 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the College of Charleston men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference play at the UNCG Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.

The Cougars led, 1-0, for the majority of the match but were not deterred when UNCG equalized seconds before the end of regulation.

After an even, back-and-forth 10-minute first-overtime period, de Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) iced the win for the Cougars with a first-class strike 27 seconds into the second overtime.

“This was a great win for our program tonight,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “Getting a result at UNC Greensboro is never easy. I'm especially proud of the way we fought through adversity after we gave up a late goal to let them back in the match. We must continue to stay focused and fight for one another like we did tonight.”

The Cougars (6-7-0, 2-1-0 SoCon) ended the match with a narrow, 15-14, shot advantage after controlling the possession for the majority of the match.

CofC seized the lead in the 11th minute when Daan Brinkman (Amsterdam, Netherlands) played a ball into the box to an unmarked Troy Peterson (Federal Way, Wash.) who scored from the penalty spot.

The Cougars protected their lead for nearly the remainder of regulation thanks – in part – to six key saves by Cougar keeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Netherlands).

UNCG would equalize late, however, when they rushed everyone into the box including Peyton Ford, the Spartan keeper who made five saves on the evening, in the dying moments of regulation.

Justin Jones sent a long throw-in into the box where it rattled around before UNCG’s Hakan Ilhan tapped it back outside the top of the penalty area. There, Brian Graham took a shot which found the top corner of the net with just 28 seconds left in regulation.

The first overtime period was evenly played back-and-forth but mostly contained in the central third of the field. Each team managed a shot in the 10-minute period.

Just after the kickoff of the second overtime period, de Silva found some space through the right-center of the field and drove deep towards the Spartan goal. About 10 yards outside of the box, De Silva suddenly pulled up his run and took a left-footed strike which was destined for the upper-right corner of the net and out of Peyton’s reach for the game winner.

The Cougars will now prepare for another test with perennial-powerhouse and defending National Champion No. 2 North Carolina. The Tar Heels will be the eighth team which CofC has played this year which has either been ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA / Continental Tire Coaches Poll.

Just another reminder that CofC takes on UNC tomorrow night at 7pm at Patriots Point. Weather will be perfect, should be another good crowd to watch the Cougs.
