I don't know if it just me but the Cup did not seem as competitive as it has been in the past. It seems that some of the teams were missing players because of Spring Break, at least more noticable than in the past. I would think that the Cup should be very disappointed in Porter-Gaud because they only showed up with 10 players.
Some statistics:
21/33 64% decided by 2 or more goals 7/33 20% by 1 goal 5/33 16% ended tied
All four Group winners swept their groups.(That is not saying that the games were bad, just an observation)
Another Observation: The point system that is being used has a hole in it, I think. I wondered about it before the Tournament and it almost happenned. Tell me if I am wrong here, I just love messing with numbers.
example Team A 20 points after 2 games, 3-0, 3-0 or greater
Team B 12 points after 2 games (1-0 or 2-1) Win and (0-0 or 1-1)Tie
B defeats A by 2-1,3-2,4-3 or 5-3 etc B receives 8 points min and 9 points max. 20-21 A receives 1 point min and 3 points max. 21-23 W-T-L No matter A wins the group with a 2-0-1 record Team B loses the group with a 2-1-0 record
This almost happened If BC would have only beaten Porter-Gaud 1-0 or 2-1 instead of 2-0 and Riverside would have beaten Lexington 3-0 instead of 2-0. Then BC would have had to beat Riverside by 2 or more and not let Riverside get to 3 goals.
In my opinion, a team that has 2 wins and a tie is better and the 2 wins and a loss team because they had to beat them Head to Head in group play.
Kyle and Kevin why did you guys come up with this system as opposed to the standard W = 3, T = 1 and other tie breakers.

Can't speak for Kyle or Kevin, but this is the point system I have seen used in most club tournaments.

Below is the Tournament Format that the Palmetto Cup has used the past two years when the field was expanded to 16 teams:
***Each team will play three opponents in GROUP play as well as one other team from another GROUP;
***All teams are guaranteed four matches (provided weather cooperative);
***There will be ties and no overtime during GROUP play - except for the semifinals and championship match, which will be decided by two five-minute overtime periods and then a penalty kick shootout, if not already determined;
***The GROUP winner/seedings for the fourth match will be determined according to a points system: 6 points for win, 3 points for a tie, 1 point for every goal up to three, 1 point for a shutout, 0 points for a loss, -1 point for an accumulated red card (two yellow cards), -2 points for a straight red card, 10 points maximum for each match;
***Any forfeit will be recorded as 3-0, with 10 points going to the winner;
***If, at the completion of GROUP play, a tie in the standings exists in determining the group champion, the following criteria shall be used to determine the champion: (1) Head-to-head competition, (2) Goal differential, (3) Goals against, (4) Goals for, (5) Coin-toss;
***Awards will be presented to the Champion and Runner-Up Teams.

I got to attend Saturday's games at the Palmetto Cup and caught the first half of the Lexington and Pinewood Prep game. I was disappointed in PP. Their conduct was not very good and they seemed to be a very undisciplined team. I went over and watched the Dreher and Ridge View game at Airport and saw the flare up with the Dreher player. A little over exaggerated, but definitely a red card foul. The final was a pretty good game with Norman North dominating possession and attack, but Riverside hung in there until the final 10 minutes at 1-0. Both stadiums were in very good condition and things seemed to run smoothly!

Good observation on Pinewood, CF. They are a very talented squad but they're letting a couple of the players drag the whole team down. Time for a couple of kids to grow up.

How did the Lowcountry school look in the tournament? Was Pinewood Prep, Porter-Gaud, or Summerville representative of Charleston area soccer? Sorry, I was out of the country over the Spring Break!
