The Carolinas Kickin’ It Challenge – Unite in the Fight Youth Soccer Tournment will debut at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. on Mother’s Day Weekend 2014. Working with Discoveries Soccer Club in Rock Hill, we have a goal of creating a signature club level soccer tournament that is focused entirely on raising money for the fight against breast cancer.

The event is modeled on the highly successful Kickin It Challenge in San Diego that is entering its second year after raising more than $20,000 for cancer research in a sold-out inaugural event. We have partnered with Susan G. Komen Charlotte and Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute to provide resources to women fighting breast cancer across our soccer families and beyond.

The inspiration for The Carolinas Kickin It Challenge is Debbie S. Whitener, Shana Shivel’s mother, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008. Shana wanted to honor her mother — and to help others who are still fighting the disease. Fort Mill residents Shana Shivel and Dr. Sarah Morris are the event co-founders; both have children playing in the Discoveries Club.

This is the second event that Sarah has helped create to fund breast cancer research. In 2010, she agreed to use her home in a Build for the Cure project benefiting Susan G. Komen. Both Shana and Sarah know what it takes to create a high-level event and Discoveries Soccer Club has the resources and experience to support the process.
