McCaskill Invited to U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team Camp

Reigning SEC Freshman of the Year one of 18 collegians called into January camp.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman forward Savannah McCaskill has been called in to the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team training camp by head coach Michelle French, US Soccer has announced.

McCaskill, the 2014 SEC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-SEC honoree, is one of 28 players to start the 2015 programming with a training camp in Sanford, Fla., from Jan. 24-31. The group features 18 collegiate players while the remaining 10 spots on the roster are filled by players who are still at the youth club level.

The U-20 group’s focus this year will be on qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The USA will enjoy a unique match-up during this camp as Frauen-Bundesliga side Bayern Munich comes to Florida to play the U-20s on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. ET at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford. The USA will also play the University of Florida during the camp on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. ET at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

This season, McCaskill scored four of her five goals in conference play, a total that led rookies in the SEC. Her 10 points in conference play also led the pack. The highlight of the Chapin, S.C., native's season came in the 3-2 win over then-No. 5 Florida on Oct. 16. McCaskill scored two goals for the Gamecocks in the match, including the 89th minute game-winner. For her performance against the Gators, McCaskill earned her second SEC Freshman of the Week honor, becoming the first Gamecock to earn multiple freshman of the week recognitions. She started every match of the season as South Carolina advanced to the program’s first-ever NCAA Quarterfinal.

McCaskill is the third Gamecock to be called into a U.S. U-20 camp, joining Blakely Mattern and Kayla Grimsley.
