6th Annual Rhoad Cup Soccer Festival
Saturday, May 30, 2015
Crooked Creek Park, Chapin, SC

Mark your calendars and make plans to join us on Saturday, May 30 for the 6th Annual Rhoad Cup Soccer Festival at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin, SC. This 4 x 4 soccer event is open to males and females 6 years of age to adults. Register teams of six (6) players to play in this charity festival to benefit a local family whose twin sons, Brett and Jacob Rhoad, have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Last year's festival was AMAZING!! Over 300 players enjoyed a fun day of soccer while approximately 1,000 folks visited, played in the Kid Zone, shopped the Silent Auction, and enjoyed the food. This year's festival will again provide a host of activities for the whole family to enjoy. The Kid Zone will feature a giant inflatable slide and games but will also include a Dunking Booth at which a host of Chapin "celebrities" can be forced to get wet! Local businesses and craftsmen have once again become sponsors or generously donated to our silent auction and raffle. And Chick fil A is partnering with our local chef to provide a terrific lunch!

Also new this year is our WEBSITE!! Visit www.RhoadCupFestival.com to register online or download registration forms & waivers, learn more about Brett and Jacob, or to find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our event.

The Rhoad Family

Brett and Jacob Rhoad were diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2003 when they were just 4 years old. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year). Duchenne md results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems - loss of gross motor ability and most notably, heart and lung issues. Young men with DMD typically live into their mid to late twenties. DMD can be passed from parent to child, but approximately 35% of cases occur because of a random spontaneous mutation. In other words, it can affect anyone.

The news of the diagnosis for Brett and Jacob was devastating to the family. Treatment options were very limited 12 years ago but have continued to develop, allowing Brett and Jacob to lead a relatively normal lifestyle, including the sport they loved the most - SOCCER - until 3 years ago. The disease progression is causing them to become much weaker. They are now dependent upon power wheelchairs and have had to discontinue even modified physical activities. Medical expenses continue to mount - from medicines to van modifications, home modifications and equipment purchases. The 2014 Rhoad Cup Festival helped the family purchase a lift for transfers, add a wheelchair lockdown system to the family van, and modify the boys' bathroom to include a roll-in shower. We are so thankful to the Rhoad Cup Soccer Festival for the assistance it provides in helping us fund the purchases we need to make for the boys' care.

Brett and Jacob are now 16 years old and enjoying their sophomore year at Springhill High School. They have refused to let this disease stop them from being involved and doing the things they love. Both boys love sports, hunting, fishing, and spending time with their friends. They have worked with the MDA and PPMD to raise awareness about this disease and raise money to fund research for new treatment options. The community support that has been poured out onto Brett and Jacob has been amazing - not just with the Rhoad Cup but with everyday assistance, care and concern. From our family to yours - Thank You! We couldn't make this journey without you.
