Its a part of the game. I don't think it is unfair, because that is like saying that a team with a better player on it is an unfair advantage. In fact I think it evens some games because a weaker team can possibly "steal" a goal from the other team if they have a long thrower. As a defender i enjoy collecting balls in the air such as this, because it doesnt have to do why talent as much as it has to do with who has the balls to not back down.

The players must be practicing this skill. Corey Seawell, fm last year's Spring Valley team could often put it into the box on a 70 yd wide field. He was a potential scorer on a football field. I've seen a number of other kids with like capabilities. I'm always amazed.
So, typically, are defenses the first time they get a taste of this skill. I think that a long throw-in is often more accurate than the corner kick and thus more dangerous. Defenses should be ready for such a capability at any time. MARK UP!
I have noted some female players getting throw- ins deep into play on the football sized fields. This long throw-in skill is increasingly an arrow in the offensive quiver.
Be alert, defenders!

WF has joseph hoefer who can toss the ball a damn long way...they utilize it quite frequently and do a good job doing it.

We have sheldon lee who can throw the ball from way out but he plays center Defender so we dont get to use him much up towards the oppositions goal.

The Way i see it though, its a weapon and if you're good at it use it.

Yeah...flips throws definitely are'nt all for show, the score. Tall guys throw it, smaller guys flip it. Either way, it's effective.

I'm pretty sure more than half of our goals have been scored from throw-ins this year.

There is definitely some good advice in this thread..I can't really think of anything that hasn't been said.

It's definitely an area of the game that doesn't get much credit..maybe because the ball doesn't go out as much in higher level soccer..but still.

What has not been mentioned is that a snap long throw in can be more effective than a corner kick as you cannot be offside from a throw-in.

I deffinately don't think that it's a cheap tactic. It's something that if you have the ability to do it then more power to you. I run up top from sweeper sometimes just to take throw-ins, I was just seeing how people, mainly defenders, feel about how much of a threat it is. Some teams it really helps, for example CC. They've got a 1/2 combo w/ Jake and Tomek, who are both strong guys, that is hard to stop. For other teams like us it hurts us because we don't have size we've got speed, so we get beat on those throw-ins. Only in away games though because our field is so wide, that there hasn't been anybody that I've seen yet that we've played at home that can get the ball into the 6.

I absolutely hate those flip throw-ins (as a defender) but it's an effective weapon. In our match against Irmo this year they pressured our defense every time with those throw-ins and we did not cope with it very well. I'm pretty sure one of their goals in the second overtime came from a flipped throw in. It may be a pain to deal with, but it's not unfair, and kudos to any coach who exploits it.
