Formerly known as the Director's Cup, the award is named after John Carlisle, the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association’s Executive Director Emeritus. It honors him for his contributions to forming and developing the organization.

The SCAAA uses a point system which awards points to schools based on their finish in 22 boys’ and girls’ S.C. High School League sports. The rankings determine the top S.C. High School League athletics programs.
