Girls battle to 1-1 draw while South Boys topple North 3-2 at 2017 North-South Soccer Classic

June 24, 2017

ANDERSON, SC – The South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association staged its annual North-South Soccer Classic on Saturday at T.L. Hanna’s Yellow Jacket Memorial Stadium and the “Electric City” was treated to a pair of exciting matches. The event, played at Jim Fraser Field, annually recognizes some of the top graduated senior prep soccer players from the South Carolina High School League.

In the girls contest, South Aiken’s Marissa Lee canceled out a first half own goal credited to the South team when she intercepted a pass at the top of the penalty box in the 53rd minute and rolled around the opposing defenders to earn a 1-1 draw. Despite just two goals being scored the match was an end-to-end affair as 29 shots were fired on goal with the North squad holding an 18-11 advantage. The goalkeepers for both sides were up to the task as 18 saves were credited to the shot stoppers. The South team’s net-minders tallied 10 saves with River Bluff’s Bryce Kinard collecting six and West Ashley’s Taylor Jarrett registering four, while the North’s duo of T.L. Hanna’s Caroline Embler and Clover’s Elizabeth Price recorded four each. Fort Mill’s Kimber Haley and West Florence’s Kailey Varney earned Most Outstanding Player honors for their efforts. The draw leaves the series that began in 1997 with the North holding a slim 9-8-4 lead, but the South has posted a 3-1-3 mark the past seven years.

The boys’ match was a see-saw affair as the South jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes on goals by Lexington’s Sam Plumer (23’) and Hartsville’s Daniel Johnson (29’). But, the North cut the deficit to one in the 34th minute when Gaffney’s Thomas LaFrance lobbed a shot from the left side of the penalty box and tucked it in the far side netting to make the score 2-1 at intermission. The North dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half and were rewarded in the 62nd minute when Blake Baker of Nation Ford zipped a pass from LaFrance that leveled the score line at 2-2. The South tried to find its footing after surrendering a two-goal lead and finally punched through with 10 minutes remaining as Academic Magnet’s Aaron Thornton rifled home a rebounded shot by Plumer for the game-winning score. LaFrance and Plumer were selected the Most Outstanding Players for their respective sides as the South cut into the North’s series advantage at 15-10-4. Noteworthy, in the past eight meetings the South has carved out a 5-1-2 record.
