Brookland-Cayce High School will host the 14th Annual Palmetto Cup April 12-15, 2006 in Cayce-West Columbia, South Carolina.

The 16-team tournament was recognized by StudentSportsSoccer.Com as the "Southeast's premier boys high school soccer tournament", this spring and has been attended by five out-of-state teams including: Atlee-VA (2002-03); Kempsville-VA (2000); Norman North-OK (2000-02-04-05); Ocean Lakes-VA (2005); and Science Hill-TN (1999). The tourney also features the top soccer programs from the Palmetto State annually.

Each team is guaranteed four matches, in which three involve group play.

The Palmetto Cup has attracted major interest from collegiate programs around the Southeast and is used as a showcase for prep soccer.

Palmetto Cup Champions: 1993 Brookland-Cayce; 1994 Richland Northeast; 1995 Chapin; 1996 West Florence; 1997 Brookland-Cayce; 1998 Socastee; 1999 Ridge View; 2000 Norman North-OK; 2001 Ridge View; 2002 Bishop England; 2003 Spring Valley; 2004 Norman North-OK; 2005 Norman North-OK.

The entry fee for the tournament is $300 and each team is also required to purchase 18 t-shirts at $10 each ($180).

It is highly recommended that your school is on spring break or that you have "clearance" to participate on multiple days as there is very little schedule flexibility due to the time constraints of the tourney.

If you are interested in participating in the 2006 tournament, please contact Palmetto Cup director Kyle Heise at kyle@scsoccer.com.

The 2006 Palmetto Cup, hosted by Brookland-Cayce High School, is almost finalized with 16 teams competing next spring, April 12-15.

The tournament field is set with 12 teams from South Carolina and four out of state teams, one each from Alaska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wyoming.

Class 4A
#5 Wando, 24-2-1
#6 Fort Mill, 18-4-2
#7 Hilton Head, 19-6-2
#8 Summerville, 18-6-2
#9 James Island, 16-5-1
#14 Spring Valley, 16-9-1
Lexington, 14-10-0

Class 3A
#2 Socastee, 16-4-4
#4 Daniel, 18-6-0
#6 Riverside, 14-6-0
#8 Brookland-Cayce, 16-8-1
#14 Airport, 15-7-0

Out of State
Farragut (Knoxville, TN)
Kelly Walsh (Casper, WY)
Putnam City North (Oklahoma City, OK)
South Anchorage (Anchorage, AK)

Brackets will be set later this Fall and our hope is to have an out of state team and three S.C. teams in each group. Travel arrangements will dictate this scenario.

Should any of the teams listed above have to cancel their commitment, we have several teams waiting in the queue.

We invited the defending 2A State Champion, Bishop England (as we do every year), but the Battling Bishops cannot play during Holy Week of Easter. I think the next time BE will be eligible is in 2007.

Bazza, Norman North-OK has been to the Palmetto Cup four times since 2000 and just wanted a change of scenery for Spring Break next year. I don't blame them and they know they are welcome in the future. They'll be playing in a tournament in Alabama, I believe Birmingham, instead.

normally i would ask why there are no SCISA teams in the tournament but seeing the list of teams i think it is pretty self explanitory. this has to be the deepest field i have seen. lexington is the only non ranked team in and we played them last year..they are quality

I have always said your tournament is by far the best I have ever been to, we have always enjoyed each trip to the Palmetto Cup and have all the respect in the world for the teams we have played, as well as the coaches, we have been very fortunate in our success but I believe that is due to the fact that my kids get very fired up to play in that particular tournament. I think you do a wonderful job in running the tournament and I have never had any complaints. I enjoy the website and read a few remarks from some people that did not want us to return and I did not think an invitation was extended for this next year. If I misunderstood that I apologize. We by no means meant any disrespect by not returning to defend our championship in the Palmetto Cup.

A number of Midlands schools that participated in the past (Ridgeview, Flora, Dreher) are not on this year's list of participants. Did they choose not to play or were they not invited?

Ridge View has region matches the same week as the Palmetto Cup, so the Blazers could not participate.

Airport is new to the tournament this year and replaced Dreher, who opted not to return after two years. Both are members of the same region Brookland-Cayce is in (Region 5-3A).

A.C. Flora has played in the tournament three times since 1999 and we try to spread it around, especially with four out of state teams coming to the 2006 Palmetto Cup.

Glad to see Riverside back in the tourney. Should be alot of fun for the Warriors!

As for Dreher and Flora, according to the link they only won 3 of 19 games, so maybe they did not deserve to return.

I played for Farragut in 1987 and 1988. In '87 we won the state. Great program.

porter gaud will have a fighting chance in scisa this year but saying that they are an overall state power able to compete with the best that the state has plus teams from around the country, might be a reach.

Unfortunately, Putnam City North of Oklahoma has had to withdraw from the tournament due to travel restrictions per their district office (fuel costs) and we now have an opening for another team.

If your high school is looking to travel for the spring season and can play April 12-15, 2006 in a highly competitive tournament please contact tournament director Kyle Heise kyle@scsoccer.com.

Hammer -- We have contacted Porter-Gaud and Pinewood Prep. P-G is not available this year, and we have not received a reply from Pinewood Prep. Thanks for asking!

We are still searching for one team that is interested in participating in the tournament. We have contacted several other programs as well, but some are committed to other tourneys and such.

If interested, please contact me ASAP at kevin@scsoccer.com! Thanks!

Kevin - I sent word of the opening to the Pinewood coach. I believe they are already playing at that time or are already at their max as allowed by SCISA.

Thanks for considering Pinewood. I hope you'll keep them in mind in the future. You have a first class competition and I believe Pinewood will be worthy of a spot for the next couple of years.

Northwestern HS of Rock Hill will round out the 16-team Palmetto Cup this spring.

This will be Northwestern's fourth visit to the Palmetto Cup, but first since 1996. The Trojans own a 4-5 record in the PC and finished as Runners-Up to Chapin in 1995.

We appreciate the Trojans and first year coach Dominic Wren for their interest and participation in the 14th Annual Palmetto Cup and welcome all participating teams to the Cayce/West Columbia communities in April!

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that since there was a coaching change that the tournament has died.

As the tournament is nearing, I thought I'd bring this up to the top for some early discussion, or atleast so its easier to access when it does come, and no one makes a topic such as "can anyone tell me who's playing in the palmetto cup?"

It should be noted that Wednesday's games will be played at Airport's Eagle Stadium, and the semi's will be at the USC practice fields, with the final match at USC's Stone Stadium. But I'm sure Kyle will update the schedule with the correct locations soon.

Quite a stellar field for the tourney this year. It's hard to pick a group of death...But I will go ahead and say that with the Tennessee power, Spring Valley, Wando, and Riverside, that group will be the toughest to come out of. Airport appears to be a little over matched, and I wouldn't hold it against them to lose all their games by 3 goals or more. Their group may be the weakest, but unless there is an overbearing performance from the Wyoming team (I don't doubt that they can pull it off) I'll say that Fort Mill and Hilton Head will be a battle. I'll guess that FM comes out of that group, but they'll lose in the semi to either Spring Valley, or Farragut (I'm hoping it'll be Spring Valley due to SC loyalty). Group A is certainly another apparent group of assortment of annihilation, and between BC, Lexington, and James Island (again, hoping for a strong showing from the SC boy's) BC can take thier group, assuming my predictions for this week are correct. Northwestern will win their group, but Daniel isn't a pushover. Northwestern in turn wins their semifinal and tops Spring Valley for the 'ship.

Team buses should park on the 7th Street side of campus in the dirt lot at the west end of The Cage. Only team buses and match officials will be allowed to enter this lot. No visitor parking will be allowed inside the brick gate behind the scoreboard at The Cage. Aerial view for map of five-mile radius of BCHS with interstate system.

Directions to Airport High School from Brookland-Cayce HS. Parking will be available in the lot that you enter from Boston Avenue. If you would like to take a student-guided tour, please check out the USC Visitor Center link to arrange a tour via appointment. Make sure that you stress that you would like to tour the campus and the athletic facilities.

If it was a straight red card, then that is a two game suspension. However, with this being Chirinos' second red card of the season, technically he should be disqualified for the remainder of the year. But, that's something the SCHSL, your A.D., and boys soccer coach will have to filter through. I know this, if he plays and isn't supposed to then those matches are privy to being forfeited by the Seahawks. I suggest someone from HHHS get in touch with Roger Hazel of the SCHSL first thing tomorrow!

heres a crazy fact...a cousin of mine plays for South Anchorage...blows my mind that his high school is coming all the way down to BC half an hour from where i live to play the teams that i play in our region. Shame is that he broke his leg during try outs and didnt make the trip...but what are the chances that my cousins high school from Alaska would find its way down here to play teams from my region.

Does anyone know the situation with the red cards or which teams may be affected by the ruling? I know some of the teams playing in the PC will already be missing key starters due to injuries, vacations, etc.

Kyle... I read The State this morning and it said today's games were being played at the USC practice fields??? All your documentation says Eagle stadium.

I assume that The State is wrong. If not let me know as I provided some info to friends of mine to attend the games.

Gentlemen -

I spoke to Roger Hazel at the SCHSL and a "soft" red is not an ejection that warrants a suspension. This is what I understood and this is confirmed. It is unfortunate that situations like the one described by Coach Chass occur (an opposing coach or fan mis-interpretting the rules and causing a player to unnecessarily miss a game), but the fact is that a second yellow card in one high school match results in only a "soft" red and is not considered an ejection that warrants a suspension (I have always equated it to a basketball player receiving his fifth personal foul and sitting the remainder of the game).

The first "straight" or "hard" red card during a season results in a one game suspension. The second results in a two week suspension. Carlos Chirinos (and I assume the young man from Summerville) will serve that suspension by sitting out the first match in the Palmetto Cup.

"An athlete who is ejected for the second time in the same sport will have his or her athletic eligibility
removed for a minimum of two weeks. An athlete who has been ejected from three contests during a
school year (all sports) shall become ineligible for the remainder of the school year. Game officials
must report all player ejections so that the League Office can officially notify the school of each
violation. When an athlete is ejected for the second time in the same sport, the school is required to
immediately begin the above prescribed penalty" That comes from the HSL handbook. If the player was ejected, wether it was soft or hard, it was still an ejection. Is all this a misinterpretation of the rules, or is the rule just not clear enough?

The rules are clear, but you have to read the entire rule to understand its purpose and intent.

Your quote is a portion of the Constitution of the SCHSL that addresses unsportsmanlike acts and applies to all sports (not just soccer). The rule begins by stating:

"Unsportsmanlike acts that take place at the site of an interscholastic contest are League matters. The League shall discipline violators of the following items.

1. An athlete who is ejected for using abusive language, flagrantly or maliciously contacting another person, making obscene gestures to opponents or spectators, shall be ineligible for a minimum of the next contest to the maximum of one year depending on the seriousness of the violation."

The rule continues on to ultimately include your quote.

Any act on a high school soccer field that includes "abusive language, flagrantly or maliciously contacting another person, making obscene gestures to opponents or spectators" is a straight or hard red and is considered an ejection under this rule. In fact, the report filed by the referee of the Hilton Head/Summerville match on April 7, 2006 specifically cited violent conduct on the part of both the Hilton Head (striking/elbowing an opposing player) and Summerville (spitting/use of foul language) player as the reason for the ejection. The match referee has summarized the conduct in another thread. Consequently, the SCHSL has notified both schools that their respective player has been suspended for one game.

However, a soft red comes from accumulating two lesser offenses that are not addressed by this rule. Consequently, a soft red is not considered an ejection (just as a fifth personal foul in a basketball game is not considered an ejection) under this rule.

Yeah, I'm not questioning you lfc, just pointing out the lack of clarity. No where does it dissern between "hard" and "soft" reds. But either way, both ARE ejections. The point I am trying to make is that it needs to be distinct in its wording, as soccer is the only sport that hands out cards for vicous/flagrant/continuous foul play. A yellow can result from a flagrant foul, but is not an ejection just a "stern" warning. We need to have the constitution amended to reflect the rules of soccer and this matter.

Yes, basketball is similar. But those players fouls out, they are not ejected. A slight difference.

I would have to agree with Chuck... I do not believe that a soft red is "fouling" out. In soccer 2 yellows equals a red. HS decided to call it a soft red, in other words "he really did not mean to do it". The offender is removed from the game and replaced.
Thus the "fouling out" analogy. Problem is that what constitutes a yellow in HS or in FIFA rules is still the same.
I will claim ignorance of the details in Basketball, but a foul is called not because you are playing in unsportsmanlike behavior but because you did not defend the man correctly, this in soccer is called...TADA!!!... a foul.

A yellow card is given because of unsportsmanlike behavior, completely different.

Is there a rule based on accumulations? or what about a history of receiving cards?

I completely agree about the need for more clarity and "soccer-specific" rules.

As an example, we all know that a player that intentionally uses his hand/arm to prevent a goal is subject to a red card (and PK), but this is not "abusive language, flagrantly or maliciously contacting another person, making obscene gestures to opponents or spectators" and could arguably not warrant even a one game suspension. However, I believe that we all accept that the rules of soccer require a one-game suspension in that case as well.

Sorry, I am going off point.

..where to start?

First of all, it's always nice to be back in Cola again..and what a beautiful day for soccer!

I got to the Cage about 10min into Daniel/NW ..just as NW keeper Taylor Crawford put his knees into the chest/neck/head of a Daniel forward. 4-0 pretty much says it all. Northwestern remains as dominate as they were in the preseason. Not a big fan of the way NW scored their 4..but they deserved the win.

..started to watch BC/SA..but I got frustrated by all the mohawks..couldn't tell who was who so it was off to Airport.

1-0 SV when we arrived. Moments after sitting down.. SV goes up 2-0..Wando answers shortly after. (i think that's how it went)

SV had the majority of play..and I found it hard to believe Wando was the 2nd best team in 4A. When their offense clicked though..it certainly CLICKED. I don't know when..but Sean Flynn scored from 35yrds out... keeper, WA defender, and SV forward collide.. ball bounces right to Flynn.. one touch 50 feet into the air.. bounces right infront of the goal mouth..and hits the top of the netting just behind the bar. Pretty sad watching the keeper and defender sprint back to no avail.

Anyway..for a moment Wando looked really good..put together a great series of one touch passing in the attacking third..and got a pretty sweet goal out of it.

With two minutes to go..things get chippy. SV's Sean Flynn goes up to clear a ball out of the six.. the biggest player on the field is thrown off balance by Wando's Andrew Eppelsheimer. Flynn bangs into the post (though his hands were up)..everyone thinks he's dead. Ref goes over.. SV parents start yelling for a card..though they have no idea WHO actually fouled their kid.

Next 10 minutes..the refs sort out the situation. Eppelsheimer is carded.. his 2nd yellow (soft red) ..Wando coach flips.. Flynn receives a yellow for language..though technically it should have been RED..and if a police officer had heard what he said when he came back to the bench..he'd probably be in cuffs.

ANYWAY.. eventually play resumes.. and the game is called shortly after. 3-2 SV.

Great match in my opinion..could have done without all the parents yelling..(there are many ways to show class).. But all in all.. great day of soccer for me. Thanks to you guys for putting on such a great tourney.

To show how strong the 2006 Palmetto Cup field was, consider the fact that six of the remaining eight teams in Class 4A (#1 Northwestern, #2 Spring Valley, #3 Wando) and Class 3A (#2 Daniel, #3 Riverside, #4 Brookland-Cayce) participated in this spring's event.

Three 4A teams (Fort Mill, Hilton Head, Lexington) reached the Quarterfinals, while James Island and Summerville advanced to the Second Round.

In 3A, Airport and Socastee were eliminated in the First Round.

As for an update to the out of state participants, South Anchorage (Alaska) is currently 14-4-1 and 13-1-1 in their state competition with one regular season match remaining before their playoffs. Farragut (Tennessee) is ranked #6 in the 3A Poll with a 11-4-5 mark and will start their playoffs this week. Kelly Walsh (Wyoming) is tied for #1 in the state's largest classification.

Thanks to all of those teams for competing in "The Southeast's Premier Boys High School Soccer Tournament" and good luck the rest of the way!

Congratulations to 4A Northwestern and 3A Riverside on their respective classification's championships this past Saturday!

Both teams competed in the 2006 Palmetto Cup, as did 4A Lower State Champion Spring Valley, so 3/4 of the squads in the Class 4A and 3A State Finals participated in this year's event. Of note, 3A Lower State Champion Dreher played in the annual spring tourney in 2004 and 2005.

We are already working on next year's tournament field, so if your squad is interested in participating, please e-mail me at this address -- kyle@scsoccer.com. The dates for 2007 are April 4-7.

You are excused for shameless self-promotion. Great job with the Palmetto Cup and all you do. Good luck in assembling another top-notch field for next year.
