What team will be the Champs this weekend in Columbia this weekend? Since Irmo and NW are in the same bracket this year who will be in the finals?

All I did was add an 'a' to Lake 'Murray' and take out an extra 'e' in 'Challenge' of the title.

The groups seem to be divided as to give great games early in the season. It should be interesting to see who comes out of group C. I do think that it is a shame that Norman North did not get their chance at Irmo last year with the team that they had, it would have been a good match. It will be a much anticipated match up since they were supposed to meet in the semis 2 years ago but Norman North had to make their plane trip back to Oklahoma. Group B on the other hand has 2 teams that are going to be battling to make it to the next round. Group A, it should be a landslide in the favor of Eastside.

Group A: Eastside(3-0) - Chapin(2-1) - James Island and North Augusta(0-2-1)

Group B: Dutch Fork and Dorman (2-0-1) - Myrtle Beach(1-2) - Ben Lippen(0-3)

Group C: Norman North(3-0) - Irmo and Northwestern(1-1-1) - Dreher(0-3)

Eastside, Dutch Fork, Norman North and Dorman receiving bids to the semis. Assuming they do not meet in the semis it will be Dutch Fork and Norman North in the finals with the win going to Norman North. Norman North is way too dominant and will leave SC this year with still only one loss recorded to their record.

I don't think that Eastside is as good as they were last year due to the loss of some good seniors. I'll even take Chapin in grroup A, even though an Eastside win wouldn't be a huge surprise.

I'll take Dutch Fork in B, but don't count out Dorman.

I think that NW is as solid as anyone and I'll take them for C and the championship.

I don't think James Island is going to lose 2 and tie 1. I expect that if they get to that point, they'll pick up a win. Ben Lippen hasn't gone 0-3 in the tournament the past 2 years, and I don't see this team as being a weak ben lippen team. Dreher shouldn't lose 3 games either. But hey...somebody has to i guess...we'll see. I for one am excited.

Does anyone know the full schedule for the tournament? As in Saturday morning games and afternoon games as well as the championship on Sunday? I know the teams aren't decided yet but I'd like to know the times.

Top Programs to Meet in Tournament
Gerald Davis, The State (Columbia)

Three years ago, answering this question would’ve been tough for Dutch Fork boys soccer coach Wayne Quinlan: Would you prefer to play in a competitive tournament before the season or during?

The answer is obvious now.

“I think spring break tournaments are great, but at that point, teams pretty much know what they have,” he said. “Right now, you don’t know. But Saturday or Sunday, you will.”

That’s because Dutch Fork, Chapin and Irmo are playing host the third annual Lake Murray Challenge, a tournament that features some of the top boys soccer programs in the state.

Action begins Friday with games at Dutch Fork, Chapin and Irmo High Schools. Also competing in the tournament are Norman North High from Oklahoma, Dreher, Eastside, North Augusta, Myrtle Beach, Ben Lippen, Northwestern and Dorman.

Northwestern is the defending tournament champion. Irmo won the event two seasons ago.

“This field is pretty scary,” Quinlan said. “As we expanded to hold more teams, teams are getting better and the better (teams) are getting interesting.”

Dutch Fork included. The Silver Foxes are the preseason No. 1 in Class 4A. Northwestern is ranked second and Irmo third. Dorman is ranked eighth.

Myrtle Beach is ranked sixth in Class 3A and Dreher is eighth. Ben Lippen is a perennial power in SCISA.

“With this field, anybody can win,” Quinlan said.

But don’t expect the best soccer. First, coaches are still playing with their lineups, adjusting their rosters. Saturday and Sunday, the final days of the tournament, competition will heat up.

Participating in a competitive tournament before the season may offer an advantage for the teams involved.

“Absolutely,” Quinlan said. “I want to know everything about my team after this weekend. Good competition is going to teach me that.”

..just got off the phone with our eye in the sky Benp

BL - 0
MB - 0

BL wins on the 7th PK 4-3

Shots were even at 12. Good game but "real sloppy"

And apparently BL scored a goal at the end of the 2nd OT..but it was called back when the ref on the farside of the field said he'd already called the game.

Also noteworthy: BL keeper saves 3 of 6 PKs

..and winning PK from ?sophomore? that is usually JV ..i thinK?

Total domination by northwestern overall just one prob no Nat Arroyo. The team had problems finishing all night with a few big saves by drehers keeper. Better luck tomorrow Northwestern. BTW great showing by the young freshman Enzo Martineze.

What does "Total Domination" mean?

Hmmm....can you post some stats? Did your keeper make any saves??? Did your defenders have to clear any off the line???? Did the other team cross midfield??? Did you physically beat up on the other team??? Did you possess all of the ball all the time???

Teams that totally dominate do not lose in PKs nor do they tie 1-1.
I love total domination posts when teams lose.

TOTAL DOMINATION MEANS dreher packed it in as northwestern had at least twice as many shots and missed about 3 or 4 break aways during the course of the game. Drehers goal came off of a wiffed ball by a northwestern defender, and when overtime started dreher continued to pack it in as they crossed the mid-line maybe once or twice during the two overtime periods.hats to drehers goalie. he had a great game

I think Cola Guy's point was it is necessary to include some of these stats from your second post in the first post. Total domination without facts says nothing. However, this post was much more informative.

I think Irmo last lost by a large margin to Walton GA about 4 or 5 years ago. The score I think was 4-0. The following year Irmo beat Walton Ga.

is the freshman enzo number two for northwestern? if so he did play a terrific game, hes blazingly fast and has some very nice ball skills. and i would venture to say that drehers keeper made more than just a few good saves. he played a near perfect game and made a crucial pk himself. as for domination it means nothing if you cant finish adn take advantage of those opportunities.

Goal scored in the first overtime. Dutch Fork controlled the game from the second half on. The first half neither team played particularly well.

DF 2 Eastside 2 in regulation. DF 4-3 pks.

DF scored first, then #9 ripped 2 rockets for goals for Eastside. DF came back in the last 5 minutes to tie it 2-2. No scores in OT.

DF keeper saved 2 shots and DF didn't have to take their 5th shot.

I don't have the stats from the ben lippen games today. However I'd like to note that in the Dutch Fork game, Kip Amaker was a machine. He not only continuously fouuled ben lippen players, but also his own players. I think the final foul count was something like 26-12 (ben lippen with 12) but 2 yellows for ben lippen and no cards for dutch fork (I don't know how you can get called for 26 fouls and not get at least one card for PI).
Northwestern 3-1 Ben Lippen
1-0 ben lippen 20 minutes in, and Northwestern answered. with 9 minutes left Northwestern was awarded a PK to make it 2-1. Then in the final seconds of the match they finished on the corner. I personally am proud of the showing that Ben Lippen had in the tournament. I think we were the only Scisa team to win a game this weekend.

kipp amaker is a beast, he plays hard always. he has a tendency to foul, but rarely gives up anything too dangerous for his own team. i wouldnt mind having him on my team, whether or not he fouls.

As for what I saw.

9AM - Irmo/Northwestern: 3-1 NW

My first impression of Irmo..small. Just couldn't get over their lack of size. As the game got underway..Enzo Martinez (as the kids are saying) is "straight sick nasty"..seriously. Northwestern definitely controlled the majority of the match. There was little to NO communication between Irmo's keeper and the fullbacks..and Northwestern just tore them apart..playing balls into that space and letting the confusion do the work. The Irmo goal came pretty late and was merely consolation. Enzo, Andrew Phillips, and Ryan Kropp(despite his hair) were a great offensive tandem for NW.

11AM - Ben Lippen/Dutch Fork: 0-1(OT) DF

First- Whoever said earlier that DF controlled from the second half on..is mistaken. If I learned anything from the two Ben Lippen matches I watched today. It's that they are a SOLID second half team. If you don't put them away early..you're in for a tough one.
So- DF started the match without a lot of their starters..taking BL lightly of course. DF still kept the ball on the BL half for most of the 1st..but BL started getting the ball into the attacking third..and I think after a close call.. the starters for DF (Hite, Goulet, Sams) came in. But it was too late. BL found their rythym and the rest of the match was fairly even. I'd still probably give the possession advantage to DF..and they did miss a few quality chances to distance themselves..(Goulet missing at least 4 just outside the post)
Another note on the officiating (which overall was very solid)..not only does it boggle my mind that Kipp Amaker himself had 7 fouls with no yellow.. but that a penalty was called inside DF's box..and BL was awarded a FREE KICK.. and not a PK!!
Long story short.. Ben Lippen had a monster game..and yes DF was missing Cates but BL didn't have four starters too.. a great match..just a shame to see a valiant effort fall short.

3PM - Ben Lippen/Northwestern: 3-1 NW

..pretty much the same story. Valiant effort..but just came up short. Totally different match than NW/Irmo. Excellent play from the BL keeper and SUPER fast defense #12 Justin (forget lastname). Still would give a slight advantage in possession to NW..but there was certainly NO domination of any kind.
As was said earlier..BL scored first..and was answered shortly after. Then the rain got a little heavier and the play became a bit more physical. Couldn't help but feel that the refs were a bit apprehensive about carding for something malicious..but were more than ready to card for dissent. Anyway..VERY physical match. BL really stepped it up and challenged 50/50 balls. The offense that resulted in a PK for NW was nothing that hadn't been going on for the last 20min. ..so there was a consistency issue there. And then the 3rd goal came with less than a minute before the final whistle.
Great GREAT performance from BL keeper, Kade #13, #4 Eric?, #12 Justin, and #15 in the middle.
..side note: The new NW coach was absolutely RAILING his team at the half.

5PM - Chapin/Norman North: 3-1 NN

Only stayed for the first half. 3-0 Norman at the half. There was no real point in sticking around. Chapin couldn't get ANYTHING past the NN defense..and the NN attack was just too much despite some excellent play from the Chapin keeper. Also..was kind of disappointed in the Chapin crowd. For it being at their place..there wasn't much support..and the voices that were there weren't very positive. Just an observation.

..left that match to go over to Eastside/DF

Eastside/DF was a perfect example of why PKs are a HORRIBLE way to finish a match. Eastside CONTROLLED that game..and the 2nd goal by #9 Rengifo was just..ridiculous. Burned a couple of DF defenders..then dribbled into the 18 and unloaded a MONSTER rocket to the NEAR post.. DF keeper just looked stunned. 2nd goal for DF was off a mistake by an EHS defender but props to DF for finishing. I can't stress enough though..the quality touch EHS had..their movement as a team.. all of it..was very impressive. DF never gave up though..and that's why they play the game.

So..I guess that concludes my summary. Excellent soccer all around..props to all the players I watched..good stuff!

(haven't proofread..so..sue me.)

too bad you dont get extra points for style. eastsides second goal WAS ridiculous...but overall the game was fairly even. eastside dominated the last 10 minutes of the first half and a good portion of the second, but df started in control, and found their rhythm again later into the second half.

and i would guess it had more to do with df resting players than underestimating bl. no one doubts that ben lippen is usually a pretty solid team in scisa.

The 2nd goal by Rengifo was definitely the best of the tournament (that I saw) ..distant 2nd was an Enzo Martinez goal against Irmo. But yeah..that shot from Rengifo was quality.

isn't time of possession controlling the game? I agree BL was dangerous the whole game, but Dutch Fork had most of the possession of the ball from the second half on. It was definately a good game for BL (it did go to OT).

..don't want to argue semantics..but you still have to account for shots, 50/50 balls, etc. Neither team was that crisp as far as possessing and passing goes perhaps because most everything was contested and there was a pretty frantic pace to the match. Annnnnyway..

I heard 4-0 for the final (can anyone confirm)? Guess Norman North will go back to Oklahoma convinced that no one in south carolina will (not only beat them) but come close.

Congratulations to Coach Young and Norman North HS. What a talented squad both technically and tactically. I can't say that I have ever seen a better HS team. Their squad could split in two and be ranked 1-2 if in SC. WOW!.

It's interesting that Norman's easiest games came against Irmo amd Dutch Fork. DF didn't get a good shot on goal until late in the game when NN had put in their second team.

I didn't get to see Norman North play this year, but I have in years past and they are loaded! I'm not shocked with Irmo's results, but they'll improve during the year, no doubt. What's up with North Augusta and Myrtle Beach at 0-3? Also, how did James Island/Dreher tie on the final day when PKs were used in the earlier rounds? Eastside looks formidable once again!

Coach Robinson and I decided before the game started that we would only play 80 minutes. A number of factors were considered including weather, referees, and nagging injuries to players. Since it was not a championship game, we decided it was in the best interests of all to play regulation only. (It should be noted that we were at CSC and the referees wanted us to play 30 minute halfs. One of them said since were were in the "consolidation game" that's all we were supposed to play but he would do whatever we wanted).
