After we played carolina to a 1-3 loss, in which numerous calls were missed I would have to agree.

irmostriker06-no one likes you, Im so sorry, it sounds like you need a friend though, post your telephone number and address and Ill bet you'll have lots of friends come hang out with you... and as for the irmo soccer team, they have a slim chance of making it past the 2nd round of the playoffs, they have a few respectable players (prince and monroe), but this is not their year, sorry bud, in the words of Lil Jon'- "Only Bi***es talk s***" so save your talking til the end of the season homie, no one wants to hear it

I saw a CERTAIN ref that posts here quite frequently give this chump sandlapper keeper a yellow card when he DEFINITELY deserved a STRAIGHT RED for clipping an opposing striker..then having the gaul to steal the kids Capri Sun.
..it starts early..
..word is this kid was up for reffing honors too. The system needs a face lift.. TOP TO BOTTOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big programs getting good calls is going downhill anyways. Anyone who has watched the last few duke games will tell you that Duke has gotten jipped out of alot of fouls that they should be getting. Duke used to get a lot of calls (but probably not more than they deserved) but it seems the refs along with america hates them now.

It's not so much that Duke is thin, as they don't need to sub. They usually start something like this :Paulus, Redick, Nelson, McRoberts, and Williams, then Dockery and Melchioni come off the bench. However, if you look at their team, there are 3 other players (Boykin, Boateng, and pocius) that would start on many of the top 25 teams in the nation (probably all of the bottom 15 of those top 25). Plus Mcclure would more than likely get substantial playing time at other schools.

Yes, back to the topic at hand. I agree that no varisty game should be played without three ref's. I watched a game recently when a red card was given by a ref who was at the far right corner and a crowd formed in the center of the field. Vision was obstucted by both ref's who were on each corner acting as linesmen. School games are just as important as club and should be respected as such.

For sure 3 refs are needed in every game and they also need to change the system all the way around. Duke, Gonzaga, Uconn, and Nova

There's not a person out there that doesn't want three refs. That includes coaches, ADs, etc. The problem is that at many schools there isn't a big enough budget for soccer to allow for three...especially since soccer doesn't make money at the majority of schools. You have to remember that refs cost money. As a matter of fact they barely get paid anything for what they do, so it's not an option to cut ref costs either. Just something to think about.

Here's something to think about.
Ohio state loses second round to Georgetown, who then makes it to the final four. Gonzaga ALWAYS loses, and look for Memphis out of that regional. Duke will be Duke and they will win it all, meeting North Carolina for the greatest final in NCAA history.

The people that we need to ***** to are not the refs who are stuck with with this system, but the people who came up with it at the National Federation of State High School Associations (www.NFHS.org.) If enough people around the country complain maybe something will change.

HAHA Benp you are right about Georgetown beating Ohio State possible but i dunno about them going to the final 4. Nova has a great chance because of their style of play its hard for other teams to match up because they start 4 gaurds. The Zags always win how many times have they been a sleeper and suprised everyone and they actually have enough talent this year unlike some other years. Duke is Duke but noway UNC beats Uconn. Uconn should win it all but will choke as a lot of favorites to win it do. Memphis will lose to the red hot Kansas team.

Benp, you made it sound very poetic, but UNC will not make it to the finals, they could make the elite 8 at best, and O. State will not lose to G.Town, they had one upset this season (Duke), and OSU will keep it that way...as for the referees, yea we need 3, I hate it when one ref inside the 18 calls a foul in the opposite box, and with the 2 ref system there is no sure way of telling if a player is offsides or not, its like your offsides unless your 2 steps behind the defender...

Gonzaga hasn't gone deep into the tournament in like 5 years. Everyone always picks them to make it to the sweet 16 or elite 8 but they always lose 1st or second round (since i've been old enough to gamble...oh wait) Nova, will not get past BC. Nova starts 4 gaurds, and the smallest starter at BC is 6'4...who has the problem? Nova.

i've got a question about a call. when we played awhile back the ball was rolling into the 18 and i came over to sheild the ball from a forward and wait for the keeper to get it or to clear it if things got nasty. but when the keeper got the ball he called an obstruction call on me and gave them a free kick. i am a little confused about this call and would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me on its basis.

whsweeper - here's a try: Obstruction is when you block another player from the ball, when you can't play it. If you are shielding the player from the ball and you can play it - it should not be called obstruction. If you step in the path of another player to prevent them from playing the ball that would be called obstruction. Unfortunately, you have to have the ref agree with your position that you can play the ball. My personal opinion is that most refs don't call obstruction as much as they should - some do, as in your case. Now who was right? Since he's the ref - he was. Hope this helps.

The biggest problem with everyone running a 3-official match has nothing to do with intentions or finances...there simply aren't enough soccer officials to go around. We always request three officials, but many times (two out of our three home matches so far this season, for example) there just aren't three available; if we had a full three, someone else would only have one. this isn't anyone's fault within the schools or the officials' organization--we just have an extreme shortage of people who are willing and able to do the job. Maybe instead of blasting officials who might make a bad call simply because they are out of position due to a 2-man system, we should be encouraging more people to take up the whistle so that everyone can have three pairs of good eyes on the field. There are some very good, conscientious refs out there who could use the help.

It's not really that 2 reffs cant see everything they just don't seem to make the best of calls lately. Particularly this season, its ridiculous.

The merits of the 2/3 man system could be debated all day. How are 3 bad officials better than 2 good ones? At a preseaon tournament, the 3 man sytem was officiated worse than any 2 man system I have seen in the regular season. Just becuase there is one more blind, whistleless official out there does not mean it is better. It is the quality of the officials themselves, not the quantity.

Having 3 officials gives you one more "show" to deal with in an AR or linesman. These people like to talk to the parents/coaches more than the middle official does. They don't talk to the players because that's specifically outlined not to be done. Why in god's name do they have to talk to parents and coaches on the sideline? By talk I mean things like "AHHH YES HE WAS OFFSIDES!" or "COACH SIT DOWN IN YOUR TECHNICAL AREA! I WON'T TELL YOU AGAIN!" (what area?).
It also is cause for a law suit because it would be an extra official especially close to a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick. We all know they could never escape this. They weigh 300 lbs on average!

Guess I've been lucky with officials this season, then...I haven't seen a blind, 300-lb. ref yet this year. Calls I didn't agree with? Sure, I've seen 'em. Funny thing...everyone doesn't agree with everything I do either. Not saying there aren't "bad refs" out there...over the years I've met some whose egos far outweigh their talent...but then the same could be said for some players and coaches as well. So...let's fire every ref who makes a bad call, cut every player who commits an illegal tackle or handball or misses an easy shot on goal, and get rid of every coach who makes a wrong decision, and see what we're left with...I suspect it wouldn't come out to much in the way of quality OR quantity.

Well here goes...argue with the clueless "living in fantasy land" people(I have nothing better to do right now)... No one ever said all officials were bad! No one ever said fire someone for ONE bad call. No one said ALL officials were 300 lbs! You need to quit spinning things Kerry!
A couple of missed calls, a couple of questionable calls, and maybe one or two just plain bad calls are expected every game. The argument is consistent bad calls or noncalls! There are a couple of officials that outweigh whole teams, they just need to move on, usually they are the worst ones(ego problems, trying to make up for being a slob). Bad officials are not common, but they are there and can really hurt the game. Even good officials agree with that.
P.S.-Hippies smell bad!

Chuck, I agree. They're out there. Had that same conversation with an official just recently who acknowledged the bad attitude of some of his colleagues. And no matter how many good calls we see, it's the bad ones that stick in memory. Just trying to balance out all the general statements out there...no fantasy land here, but reality always has more than one face.

Coach Chass,
I think you summarized the issue well. My own agenda is to promote a system where good officials are acknowledged and monetarily rewarded. Officials do suffer endless abuse from all domains. sb
