It never ceases to amaze me how hard it is for some people to grasp sarcasm in these posts.

Here's a possible explanation for the 5 minute penalty.

The Ref used this tactic to keep the player off the field. I have seen Refs tell a coach that it would not be in the team's or player's best interest to have a player come back on the field. It was the refs opinion that the player was only a play away from losing control and getting another yellow or a straight red. Usually the ref somehow expresses that to the coach and the coach does not return the player to the field immediately. In the case last week the ref was on the other side of the field from the coach and thought the five minutre rule was an easier way of getting the job done. This explanation was given to me tonight from someone at that game last week. - Not the most correct way of keeping a player from getting ejected, but effective.

Effective...but didn't you say that there wasn't even 5 minutes left in the game? I think this should still be reported. If this was me or my team I would still be mad. Just doesn't seem right to me.

I am still angry about the situation. The player deserved the card! He committed the foul and took away a breakaway. That being said, there was no ill intent nor was the player out of control. This was his second foul of the game. Also, I was at the meeting in Columbia and as far as I remember do not remember hearing anything of that nature. If the case is brought up that the ref felt the kid needed some time off the field, no matter how much time is left, it is the ref's responsibility to explain that to the coach. The only explanation I got was after the game when the ref shared that they were told to do that for all cards. Pretty shady if you ask me. This was the third or fourth time we had this ref, and I became less and less happy with his performance as the season progressed. I realize that we did not have the best of years (this was my first here), but I pride myself on teaching my kids not to play dirty.

kickittome - The way the Ref handled the situation was poor. I myself didn't think a card was warranted by the particular foul, but I can't say that it wasn't for an accumulation of things. I didn't see anything on our half of the field that made me believe your player was behaving poorly. Having said that, I'm relieved that it didn't affect the outcome of the game. I recommend contacting the referee assigner and letting him know of your displeasure, I already have.

I am. Now that things have quieted down for us, I am able to get some other things done. Look forward to playing you guys next season.
