Some past and present “Big Fish from Small Ponds”

Robert Hunter - Waccamaw, then transferred to IMG (Furman)
Jamal Geathers - Lincoln, then transferred to Aiken (USC)
Michael Barnhill - Aynor (Coastal University)
Justin Blomdahl - Waccamaw
Preston Meyers - Lincoln
Eric Gladden - Dixie

I wouldn’t necessarily penalize nor belittle the accomplishments of a player who is a victim of his or hers geography. I have seen many players from our club travel great distances to play for other clubs and I have also seen players travel great distances to play for a team in our club. I have seen parents move their entire family and even break-up their family to have their child play for other schools. I have seen families pay extraordinarily large amounts of money to send their children away to schools that have better teams. I have seen families sneak players across school districts, and I have seen families sponsor other players, so they could play for their school. I can neither condone nor censure the decisions made on behalf of these players and I sincerely hope that these decisions are made in the best interest of the player. In any event, let the “Big Fish” have their day, let them enjoy the fruits of their labor, and let them enjoy the game. Besides, that is why we have different classes (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, SCISA). If we didn’t, what chance would a player from Ware Shoals, Lewisville, Mullins, or Garrett Tech have of ever being noticed… “Keep Playing Hard Big Fish” and someone will take notice…

I do agree that there are often kids who are tremendous soccer players, who play for teams without a lot of talent. I often think about how little support they get from teammates who are not near their level. With that in mind, I think you have to take into consideration the individual player. However, from my experience, a lot of players look really good playing not so good teams. Then when they play the real competition, reality sets in.

Thats why college coaches scout mostly on the club level. You get a true sense of the true talent of a player watching them participate in Premier League or State Cup. However, I sense somewhat of a reverse bias here. A kid like Preston Myers may not have competed at the highest level in HS and some may question the validity of his accomplishemnts. However, anyone who has seen him play club knows he's the real deal,so don't penalize him because he plays for a small rural school without alot of soccer tradtion.

By the way I've also seen highly publicized large school players struggle when playing premier league. That why the Palmetto Classic is so popular with College coaches. The quality of the field gives a much better representation of a players talents than watching player X as his team overwhelms a lesser opponent.

I don't care what league you play in 30 goals and 17 assists is darn good. Justin has good size and skills. He scored around 25 goals last year as a Freshman.
