I noticed that Fort Mill got the first seed in that region. What was the tie breaker that gave them the win? I read that "strength of schedule" was used to determine the champs, but that is a very unclear way to describe it. How did they factor who's schedule was better, and why not use the tournaments?

(sidenote) I think its quite funny that the best team in South Carolina didn't win their region, or one of their tournaments. But that doesn't mean I don't think they are the best. I've seen them, and Ben Lippen has played them, and we know that they are number 1.

I really would like to see a coach post something about the tie breaker in that region and explain it to everyone...

I heard the AD at Ft. Mill is on the committee. I think many people want to know this tie breaker procedure. I head it came down to strength of schedule. If that is the case I would like to see how they decided that. I can not believe Dom Wren is not asking questions as well as the NW AD. As I said before there is NO rationale tiebreaker or criteria for NW not to be #1. 99-1 goals for, against speaks for itself.

I believe the following system is in place,

1. Region record
2. Unit system: did any of the tied teams beat a higher region ranked team?
3. Point system:
AAAA win = 4 points
AAAA loss = 3 points
AAA win = 3 points
AAA loss = 2 points
AA win = 2 points
AA loss = 1 points
A win = 1 point
A loss = 0 points

You guys can try to figure out the points. I lack the time and energy.

Thanks sccoach for the info. It is just nuts. If you had 20 nuetral soccer people vote between these two teams, it would 20-0 everytime.

I think it is funny as well. The tiebreaker is strange, but that's the way the ball bounces. I'm just looking forward to playoffs to see who really is the best!

they need to put a new system in place such as goal differential in region play or goal differential between both games. This is asanine to be honest that they get the number 1 seed seeing first game was 3-0 and second only 1-0. But hey gj fm

what sccoach said is correct. It decided the tie break between lancaster, york, and rh.

NW can not blame anyone but themselves. They had the home field advantage and it was senior night. They couldn't have had a better time to play Fort Mill. They simply did not show up for the game that mattered most. However, I don't think it is going to matter what seed they are. They should go far.

I agree usually a great team that has been rolling off blow out after blow out for most of the season needs to be reminded that they are human and beatable before playoffs. I think it will make NW have a "chip" on their shoulder throughout the playoffs.

Trojan10, you are exactly right. They had everything going for them, they just didn't show up. I also look for them to do well in playoffs, regardless of seed.

I don't understand why everyone is for goal differential espescially in this region. Now if FT. Mill and Northwestern wanted to they could beat the teams in the region terribly, but they don't, at least FM doesn't. Now make the region tie breaker, goal differential, and you are going to see 20-0 blow outs, which doesn't help either team get better. Granted I follow the girls soccer more then boys, and FM Girls stop scoring when its 7 or 8-0 and then start playing one touch goals and headers, that type of thing. Now keep in mind that they start this in the middle of the first half typically. If the region tie breaker was goal differential, they would just run up the score and show no mercy. That doesn't make anyone better.

But what you forget to factor in is that a lot of those games that NW was running the score up in was not even their starters. They even had jv players coming in. I don't know if Fort Mill did that or not. But like it was said earlier this year, if NW beats a horrible team 4-0 then everyone is wondering why they did not beat them worse. So then when they put in subs and jv players that beat the crap out of those teams people make it look like they are just running up the score to be d-bags.

when is the last time NW had to play a playoff game on the road, except for the state championships? could that play a part in their playoff games? They have enjoyed a nice homefield advantage in recent years in the playoffs

No I understand that, i'm simply saying in their region, goal differential is not a good determinant for that reason exactly, half the games were played by JV and none starting team mates. In a more competitive region, or possibly goal differential against ranked teams would be an accetable way to determine region champ, but region goal differential, in their region, is not a good determinant.

this is a joke everyone knows NW is #1. if not then why are they still ranked ahead of FM in the state rankings. NW's win % is still better, their overall record is still better, they have a region goal differential of +98 (i think)which is the best in that region, they won the Palmetto Cup, and they have already beaten FM 3-0. and more.......

Tiebreakers should be the same across the state, but in reality each region has their own tiebreakers. I would like to see this rule changed.

It would simply be nice, if the tiebreaking proceedures for each region were announced, or written somewhere in writting. It seems like there have been a lot of ties this year, and seems like no one knows the tiebreakers for each region.

I think the tiebreaker should be aggregate score between the two games they played which would favor NW over FM by 3-1. That would be the most sensible for all regions since it would only not work if there was a three way tie.

Aggregate would be the best way. Nobody could possibly argue with that but what's done is done. FM wins the region, Congrats to them. I actually think this is beneficial to NHS. Their side of the bracket is easier in my opinion. FM has Mauldin and SA. NHS has Lexington and Dorman.

I believe the last time NW played on the road was 2002 quarterfinals at Dorman (eventual state champions) where they lost in OT.

I forgot when it was but its not like they were suppose to get home field advantage until the championship. A lot of it in the past had to do with #1 seeds getting beat and then NW being the next highest ranked team. So the same thing could happen this year if I'm not mistaken.

NW is used to playing on their large field, but going to other locations to play could throw them off a bit. Dorman has a small field and if they have to go there to play then it could be very difficult for them. I think that they will struggle a bit but I expect them to get to Columbia.

It's been a while since I was there, but the field is inside a track, and it seems both narrow and short. Throw-ins and any kick inside mid field can easily go deep into the box. If NW is used to playing on a large field with space they will have trouble with a tight field like that. They have already played Dorman at their field this year and they came out with a 3-2 win. Not a typical NW win. Dorman will need to get by Lexington first. Not an easy task.

Seeding means nothing...there is a huge difference between a #1 seed and a #2 seed. Look at Irmo...they have to go through Wando, and HH and depending on how far DF goes, that could be a home game for Irmo if they make it that far and DF does too.

tonights game was well played by both sides. did anyone else notice that the ref called a few fouls the wrong way. man na's keep made some nice saves. and it looked like andrew and ryan were a little pumped up when they sent some open oppertunities over the pipes. how is gwood? will gwood's defense be able to contain enzo and ryan?

The seeding came down to Northwestern's match against Darlington whereas Fort Mill played a better outside schedule. All other things were equal since they toss out tournaments and the region was one loss each. Fort Mill played one higher classification opponent compared to Northwestern's match against Darlington.

I think the tiebreaker should have gone to the matchups against each other comparing goals for and goals against up to 3. Then on to outside schedule.
